Prologue

Annabeth always hated not knowing. And waiting. It made her feel stupid and she couldn't concentrate because of her ADHD.

She thought about this as she looked at the ground biting her lip worriedly. Today was the day. The day they would find out if Percy got into the army or not.

That's where he was now. Going to find out if he was in or not. So that left Annabeth at their house in New Rome waiting.

She was meant to be working on some architectural designs, but she was too nervous for that.

Percy had said if he got in he would be gone for several years and didn't want Annabeth to have to wait for him.

Annabeth wanted him to be happy, and wanted him to get in. But at the same time she wanted Percy to stay with her. To settle down and get married. To live in their house in New Rome and have children together.

She was torn between what she wanted.

The only thing she wanted now was to know whether or not he was in.

Suddenly she heard the sound of keys rattling together and the sound of their front door opening.

Annabeth sprinted out of the study and into the hallway. She ran down the stairs, nearly tripping over, and ran to the front door to greet Percy.

Without saying a word, Percy pulled her into his arms and into a kiss. He poured all his emotion into the kiss and Annabeth returned.

When Percy pulled away he rested his forehead on hers, his arms still wrapped tightly around her. Annabeth had her arms around his neck and searched his eyes for an answer. Was he in? Or not?

"Annabeth," Percy started, and Annabeth noticed the sadness laced through his voice.

"Percy, did you or did you not get in? Please just tell me," Annabeth begged, and she could hear the worry throughout her voice.

"I-I..." Percy stammered, Annabeth looked at him, hopeful, "I got in," Percy looked towards the floor, dropping his arms from around Annabeth.

Annabeth felt all hope drain out of her. She raised a hand to her mouth and took a small step back, the tears gathering in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Annabeth," Annabeth noticed Percy had tears of his own starting to pool in his eyes.

Annabeth dropped her hand and took a step closer to Percy, taking hold of his hands. And to her disappointment, he didn't even hold them back.

"What does this mean for us?" Annabeth whispered, the dread obvious in her voice.

"Annabeth," Percy started, and finally met eyes with Annabeth, "I don't want you to have to wait for me for years. And I might not even come back-"

"No," Annabeth cut him off, "NO! I-I...I don't care if I have to wait...fifty years, even my whole life. I would wait if it meant waiting for you because I love you. And isn't love something worth waiting for?" Annabeth tried. She tried to remain as hopeful as she could.

"Annabeth, I'm so sorry but-"

"NO!" Annabeth interrupted again, "Did you think about me and what I want in this situation? I don't care how long I have to wait. Waiting is better than losing th-the...love of your life Percy-"

"But is it," now it was Percy's turn to interrupt, "is it better?" Percy's voice was soft, making Annabeth feel even worse somehow.

"Percy," Annabeth felt the tears start falling down, splattering on her cheeks, "do you even love me? Because you're not even trying to make this work." Percy looked taken aback and offended. But his expression quickly turned to one of anger.

"ANNABETH OF COURSE I LOVE YOU," Percy lost it and started shouting at Annabeth, something she never thought he'd do, "I AM TRYING WHAT DO YOU THINK I'M DOING?"

The hurt must've been evident on Annabeth face because Percy stopped and a look of guilt overcame his features. The tears started to rain down Annabeth's face even faster now, and she had to choke back a sob.

"Look, Annabeth," Percy's voice was suddenly soft again, "I've seen long distance relationships, and it doesn't work out."

"I can call you. Everyday," Annabeth felt her hope subsiding, she knew she was losing this but she couldn't just give up.

"Annabeth. You might not be able to call me everyday. Maybe even at all. Not in the army, Annabeth," that was it. Annabeth's hope was gone. Shattered.

She finally broke and she started sobbing. Heartbroken sobbing.

She felt warm arms envelope her and smelled the ocean scent that was Percy.

"I am so, so, so sorry Annabeth. And please know that I love you. I love you so dam much." Annabeth thought she heard in Percy's voice that he was crying.

"I know," Annabeth responded, "when do you leave?"

"Now." Percy was definately crying, "I just need to get a few things and then I leave."

"Okay," Annabeth tried to not fully break down, "okay, okay."

Percy pulled away and went upstairs to pack, leaving Annabeth to think about everything that just happened.

Percy was in the army. He was leaving right now. She wouldn't see him for several years. Had they broken up? For once in her life, Annabeth didn't know the answer, and she didn't know what to do once he left.

Annabeth leaned against the front door for more support. The tears had stopped slightly and she tried to stop them completely.

She gasped for air until she was once again breathing normally. She wiped away her tears, leaving her face red and blotchy, but she didn't care.

She heard the thumping sound of Percy's footsteps as he walked down the stairs. Annabeth had been dreading this moment. The final goodbye.

Percy walked up to her at the front door and stopped just in front of her. Annabeth straightened herself so she wasn't relying on the door for support.

"I guess this is goodbye," Percy sounded sad, but the tears were no longer in his eyes.

"I guess so," Annabeth replied, so much sadness in her voice it hurt her to listen to.

"I am still so sorry Annabeth and just please remember that I love you so, so, so much," Percy had almost no emotion in his voice at all, making Annabeth sadder.

"I love you too, Seaweed Brain. Gods I love you so much," Annabeth bit her lip in an attempt to momentarily stop her tears, "does-does this mean we're...breaking up?"

Percy was silent for a few moments, "...I guess so..." Annabeth surged forwards and gave Percy one last hug.

Percy pulled back slightly and kissed Annabeth. They both put as much emotion into that kiss as they possibly could. Their last kiss.

Percy pulled away and once again put his forehead to hers. "Wise Girl," Percy cracked a grin at her nickname, somehow making Annabeth smile back. She couldn't resist his troublemaker smile, even in the worst situations.

"Seaweed Brain," Annabeth's voice cracked slightly at the end. Percy pulled away and reached for the door handle.

Annabeth moved out of the way of the door so he could get out. Percy opened the door and walked out to his car.

Annabeth stayed by the door watching as Percy loaded his one bag into the car and got in himself.

He gave her one last look. One last smirk. Before he drove away. Leaving a heartbroken Annabeth by the front door.

Annabeth could no longer prevent her tears and they came out in heart wrenching sobs. Her tears race each other down her face, each leaving a new pattern, before they splattered against Annabeth's shirt.

She fell down to her knees in the doorway, still sobbing.

She would never see Percy, her Seaweed Brain, again.

Little did she know what the future held...
