12. Funerals

Becca sat at the table, leaning against her boyfriend as she ate her lunch. Peter's arm was wrapped around her shoulders. It had been a month since the fair and Lagos incident, Becca had tried to check in with her mother and uncle. Her brother even. But none were answering, she felt isolated from her family. And Peter could feel it radiating from his girlfriend. But despite not hearing from her family, her friends were still there for her, trying to cheer her up.

"So what're we doing for the study group this time?" MJ asked as she was leaning into her own boyfriend, Harry.

"We always do it at your house, MJ, why not someone else's this time?" Harry asks, "Shake things up." He suggests.

"How about your house, Harry?" Ned pipes up, "You're the rich kid in the group, your house must be awesome." He states with a smirk on his face as he eats his pizza roll.

"It's possible we could have our study session at my house, but i'll have to see when my Father is out of town." Harry answers, "He doesn't like visitors."

"But you threw that party two months ago." Michelle pipes into the conversation, her eyes not looking up from her book that she was reading. "Did he not know about that?" She asks. Harry was the resident party thrower at Midtown. Despite his dad's wishes, he would host parties that sometimes got out of hand. Resulting in Harry being grounded, but his father was never around and Harry needed to be around people.

"No, he doesn't know about that. If he does, he hasn't punished me for it. Which isn't like him." Harry mutters, shrugging, "It is what it is. Father's never been great at being there for me so i've just learned to depend on myself."

MJ leans into Harry to comfort him, kissing his cheek. The Asian teenager smiles, looking down at his girlfriend, pressing his lips gingerly to her forehead. Becca smiles at her friends exchange. Then looks up at Peter with her own gaze.

The boy with her heart in his hands looks down at her, his curls coming down on his forehead. Becca giggles then pushes his curls back a bit so she can see his face better, "You need a hair cut but i love your curls."

"What a cruel world you live in, Fia." Peter teases. His senses pick up someone behind them, looking behind him and Becca, his eyes widen, "Doctor Bryne." He mutters in shock. The rest of the table then looks up in shock.

Ned fumbles with his pizza roll, letting it fall back onto the plate, "Oh my gosh, it's Doctor Bryne." He stutters out, shocked by the presence of the famous doctor.

Becca's blue eyes widen when she looks back and sees her mother, "M-Ms Liza." She mumbles in shock, Becca knew something was wrong. She could sense it from how her mother was conducting herself. The normal sparkle in her mom's eye is gone. Mary is hurting, and all Becca wants to do is help her mother. "What is it?" She asks quietly.

"I need to speak with you, Peter can join if he'd like." Mary mutters quietly. The mother stands off to the side as the young couple in question turns back around to face their friends.

"Go, we'll still be here." MJ states, the other three nodding in agreement. Peter and Becca stand up from the table.

"We'll be back." Peter tells them, following Mary out into the empty hall way to find out what's wrong.

"Mama.. What's wrong?" Becca asks hesitantly, her eyes widen as her mother breaks down into tears. The daughter scrambles to get to her mom as she collapses to the ground. Becca wraps her arms around her mom. She looks back at Peter, who stands still, not knowing what's happening.

"Peggy, she passed away a few hours ago." Mary mumbles, looking up at her daughter and her boyfriend. Becca's world starts to crumble as the room begins to spin, shaking her head.

"No. No, i just saw her! Mama, i just saw Aunt Peggy! She can't be gone! She can't be!" Becca screams, Peter scrambles over to her, holding his girlfriend close. He falls to the floor with her as he cradles her in his arms, rocking the two of them. His own mind trying to come to terms with the loss of Peggy Carter. A woman he had recently met, the woman who gave him the courage to take the leap of faith to be with Becca. "We just found each other again!" Becca continues to scream into her boyfriend's chest, clutching his shirt in a fist.

The boyfriend feels tears threatening to leave his eyes. He owes his world to Peggy, without her, he and Becca wouldn't be together now. He wanted to be able to tell the former Director of Shield what had happened. He had planned on taking Becca and visiting again soon. But that day would never come now. He holds Becca tightly in his arms, "It'll be okay, Fia.." He mumbles, trying to calm her down some, "I know it doesn't feel like it will be right now, but it'll get better. Remember when we lost Uncle Ben?" He asks, feeling a small nod from Becca he continues, "We got through that, and we can get through this. Peggy would want you to celebrate her life, right?"

"She wasn't one for mourning." Mary says, "She felt that the dead were in a better place so why mourn them." She states, leaning against the lockers, her hand resting on Becca's head. "The funeral is in three days in London." She adds, "I know you want to come."

Becca looks up at her mother, nodding slowly, "I do." She mumbles, then looks over at her boyfriend, "Are you coming with?"

Peter shakes his head, "As much as i want to be there for you, i should stay. Keep Aunt May company." He says, "I'll be with you in spirit and you can call me after." He adds with a small smile on his face as he pecks her lips with his own to try and cheer her up. "Tell her goodbye for me, okay?"

Becca nods, smiling softly but the sadness she still feels is crippling her as she stands up slowly with the help of Peter. She still clings to his shirt as her Mother smoothes her hair down. "How is Uncle Steve taking it?" She asks quietly. She knows her uncle must feel the loss hard.

"Not well." Mary replies quietly, "He needs us."

Three days later
London, England

Becca stood in between her Uncle Sam and mother as Steve and the other pallbearers carried Peggy's casket down the isle. The children's choir that sang only made Becca's heart hurt more than it had previously. The teenager wanted nothing more than her boyfriend standing beside her, holding her hand and keeping her standing because right now, Becca felt as if her knees could give way any second as the casket got closer to the alter. Sam looked down at his niece, he could see her shaking and his heart ached for her. He dipped his hand out of his pocket and grabbed onto Becca's small and delicate hand. He guided her hand around his arm and she clung to his suit jacket with both hands when she realized what Sam was doing to help her.

"I got you, Princess. Just lean on me." He whispered into her ear and tears began to roll down her cheeks. Becca sniffled her nose as quietly as she could. Mary wrapped her arm around her daughter's waist, holding her close as the congregation seated themselves. Steve sat beside Becca when Mary was called up to the podium to speak for Peggy's eulogy. Becca knew her Mama was nervous about what she would say to the thousands of people attending the funeral. She couldn't say that they had known each other for decades because to the world, Elizabeth Bryne hadn't known Peggy that long, only a short period of time. Becca couldn't say anything like she wanted either. She couldn't tell any of the stories she shared with her godmother when she was a baby and child. Becca felt as if she couldn't mourn her godmother properly in public, and it wasn't fair.

Becca watched her mother walk up to the podium and stand stoically in front of those thousands of people, her paper in hand with what she was going to say. Mary breathed in deeply the mother and daughter locking eyes before she began to speak. "Most of you know Margaret Carter as a founder of Shield, or one of the greatest spies in the fifties and sixties. But i just knew her as my best friend, and my sister." Mary started, Becca smiles softly at her mother's voice as she leans into her uncles. Both men taking one of her hands into their own. "I met her when i started working in Shield when i was much younger than i am now. She took me under her wing, and we grew close quickly." Mary pauses, steadying her breathing as she continues, "My whole life i felt had felt alone at times, never having someone who i could call my sister. I have a brother who i love, but nothing can beat talking to your best friend about certain things. And Peggy was that person for me for many, many years.

"She told me that i needed to take the leap of faith when i talked with her about the man who would one day become my husband. And another time, i asked her how she managed diplomacy  and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either. She said, 'compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong, is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye and say, 'no, you move.'" Mary finishes, Becca is staring at her mother in awe as she looks over Peggy's casket, "You changed the world for us, now let us be able to continue your legacy and make you proud of us." She whispers before stepping down from the podium back to her seat in the front pew.

When the service was over, the only people still in the sanctuary were the family who knew Peggy the deepest. The Rogers family. They couldn't leave just yet, the reality of it all still sinking in. Becca was taking it the hardest out of the three family members, she had just found Peggy again. She had just spoken with her, introduced Peter to her. And now her godmother was gone, so many words left unsaid between the two. Advice the teenage girl could've used never spoken. Becca and Peter both knew, that without Peggy Carter, their relationship wouldn't exist.

So there the family sat, and stood, Steve leaning against the pew his sister and niece were sitting in. He felt protective over them after saying goodbye to another friend lost to time. Becca held her phone in her hands as her friends sent encouraging words to her through their groupchat.

Thing 2
We're all here for you, Sof.

Ginger lives matter
We love you, Sof, focus on getting better.
We'll all still be here for you when you get back.

Richie Rich
MJ's right, we'll even have a big sleep over when
you come home if that's what you want to do.

Doom and Gloom
Does the weather in London match the
atmosphere in the church?

Thing 2
Elle! You shouldn't say things like that!

Becca chuckled softly at Michelle's question, appreciating her friends sentiment. But the one person she didn't see a text from was her Benji, her rock.

Miss America
It's okay, Ned.
Thank you guys, and thanks Elle for giving me a laugh
that i didn't know i needed.
Benji..? Are you there?

Thing 1
I'm here, Fia. I just know what you're going through.
I can't find the words that would make this any easier.
We just went through this with Uncle Ben only a few months ago..

Ginger Lives Matter
You two have been through a lot of loss recently and that sucks.
Harry's sleepover idea sounded like what we all need when you get home.

Doom and Gloom
How is your dad taking it? He was close with her right?

Miss America
Yeah, he's taking it pretty hard, if not worse than me.
But Uncle Sam is with us as well as Dr Bryne.
They're both really supportive through this.

Thing 1
You told Peggy goodbye for me right?

Miss America
Of course i did, Benji.

Thing 2
Wait, hold up.
Peter met Peggy Carter?
Why did neither of you tell me!

Richie Rich
Ignore Ned.
When did you meet her, Pete?

Thing 1
Few months ago actually.
Peggy's actually the sole reason Fia and i are a couple.
Without her advice, we wouldn't have been brave enough
to tell each other how we feel.

Miss America
Benji's right. My dad told me where Aunt Peggy was and we paid her a visit.
She gave us the same advice she gave my dad's sister
when they were training at Camp Lehigh.

Thing 2
Wow.. what'd she say to you guys?

Thing 1
To take the leap of faith.

Doom and Gloom
She seemed like a genuinely nice person from all that we've
learned in history class and reading about her.

Ginger Lives Matter
So Peggy Carter shipped you two before even you two did?

Miss America
Ship? I don't understand..

Thing 2
🛳🛳🛳

Doom and Gloom
Very helpful, Ned.

Richie Rich
Shipping two people is basically wanting them to be
together and rooting for them.

Thing 1
Right, like how we like Han and Leia together, Fia.
That's a ship, we ship them together.

Miss America
Ooohhh, okay. I think i get it now.
Then yes, Aunt Peggy shipped Benji and I.
Does that make her the captain if she was the one to bring us together?

Thing 2
I'm trying so hard not to quote Princess Bride rn
But yes. We officially name Margaret "Peggy" Carter, captain of ship Benfia.

Miss America
Benfia?

Ginger Lives Matter
Ship name, love. Each ship has a name. You call Peter "Benji" and Pete calls you "Fia"
Only right to combine those into your ship name.

Thing 1
We should let Fia have some time with her dad and the others..

Richie Rich
Right, well, we all love you Sof.
Pete slightly more than us.

Doom and Gloom
Talk to us soon, okay?
Don't shut us out.

Thing 2
Elle's right. Talk to us, Sof.

Thing 1
I love you, Fia.
To the moon and back.

Doom and Gloom
Sap.

Miss America
I love you guys so much.
I love you, Benji.
To the stars and beyond.

Becca put her phone down as she heard heels clacking on the marble flooring of the sanctuary. Her eyes scanning past her Uncle as seeing her Aunt Tasha dressed in black just like everyone else was on this day. Becca smiled softly as she stood, making her way to her beloved Aunt. "Hi Aunt Tasha." The teenager greeted the spy with a hug. Natasha returned the gesture, holding onto her niece tightly.

Nat pressed her lips to the top of Becca's head, "Маленький волк." Little Wolf, the aunt greeted, mumbling her words against her niece's head. Steve smiled softly at his niece and friend's exchange, but something inside of him as well as Mary told them that Natasha wasn't just here to comfort her niece.

"When i came out of the ice, I thought everyone i'd known was gone. Then i found out Mary was still alive, i was so happy. But when i found out she was still alive, i was just lucky to have her." Steve mumbles to his friend and also his family. The her he mentioned was Peggy, he hadn't said her name out loud since the news of her passing broke. As if saying her name in past tense truly sealed that she was gone.

Becca leans into her aunt's embrace when the spy responds, "She had you back too."

Steve looks at his friend, one hand in his pocket and the other on Mary's shoulder. "Who else signed?" Steve asks solemnly.

Becca hesitates, lifting her head off her aunt's shoulder. The teenager looked between her family, "Signed what?" She asked confusedly. None were answering her fast enough until her mother spoke for the first time since her eulogy.

"Secretary Ross paid the Avengers a visit just before Peggy passed. He said that the Avengers were now going to be under the supervision of the governments of the world. No longer independent." The mother explains to her daughter as best she could without her personal feelings seeping into her words. "The Sokovia Accords are what everyone is signing today in Vienna."

Natasha nods in confirmation to what Mary had said, then looks back at Steve. She holds onto her niece close when she replies to his question, "Tony, Rhodey..Vision." She answers.

Becca snaps her head up in shock, "Buddy and Uncle Rhodey?" She asks and Natasha nods, "Why would they sign it?" the teenager couldn't understand why her brother would sign these accords. Her mind couldn't fathom it.

The mother hesitates, breathing slowly, "They see the Accords as a good thing, Baby."

Becca shakes her head, "But they're not! You said that the governments want to supervise the Avengers, that's not good. Because what if you guys need to go somewhere to help innocents but those governments don't let you in?" These accords were a nightmare to Becca, her family being torn apart, "That means people will die when you could've stopped it. Why would Buddy support that?" She couldn't understand why her brother, a man she looked up to, would support this. It wasn't right.

Steve nods in agreement with his niece, "That's why your Ma and I didn't sign it." He reassures his niece, then looks back to his friend, "Clint?"

"Says he's retired." Natasha responds.

"Wanda?"

"Tbd." She answers again, "I'm off to Vienna for the signing of the Accords. There's plenty of room on the jet." She offers. Becca watches her mother and uncle exchange glances, "Just because it's the path of least resistance, doesn't mean it's the wrong path. Staying together is more important than how we stay together." Natasha says to the Captain and Doctor, not wanting to break their family up. Becca could hear her Aunt's voice waver as she stepped closer to Steve, her arms still wrapped tightly around Becca's small frame.

Steve shakes his head, sighing as he responds, "What're we giving up to do it?" He asks. Becca knew the answer. Their freedom.

Natasha sighs in defeat, looking over at Mary but the mother also shakes her head, "I'm sorry, Nat. But we can't sign it. It goes against everything we believe in." She gives her answer to the spy.

Natasha nods slowly, "I know."

Steve raises an eyebrow, "Then what're you doing here?" He asks.

Natasha looks between the Rogers family, tightening her hold on her niece, "I didn't want you guys to be alone." She says softly. Placing another kiss on top of Becca's head. The niece and aunt break apart when Mary steps forward to speak with Natasha privately. Becca watches her mother and aunt when Mary turns back around to look at her brother and daughter.

Steve knows what Mary is going to do, he nods in a silent agreement, encouraging her. He wraps his arm around his niece when Mary and Natasha walk out of the sanctuary. He looks down, his own blue eyes meeting those of his brother in his niece, "Let's go find Sam, huh? I'm sure he wants to know how you're doing." Steve says softly, "And you can tell us about how Queens has been treating you." Becca nods, smiling softly as she grabs her phone from the pew. The uncle and niece duo walking side by side as they exit the sanctuary.
