07. weapons

In this chapter:

We help you with the many names of guns and other weapons for your character(s) to use!

Weapons:

No one can survive the apocalypse without using weapons. But there are so many guns, knives and other materials that can be used to be a badass walker killer that we decided to make this chapter to help you guys pick the right weapon for your character!

When choosing a weapon for your character, try to be original! I've seen many fanfics in which the main character also wields a crossbow. And while it's an awesome weapon, it's one that requires a lot of strength so think about if it is actually possible for your character to use such a weapon and not only that, as the weapon Daryl is known for using, it's part of his signature. Just like Michonne with her katana and Rick with his Colt Python. There are many weapons out there so be original!

Also, please remember that learning how to use a gun isn't something you do in one day. Unless your character was a cop or in the military or had a dad that liked to shoot things, it isn't likely that he or she will know how to handle a gun. Let me use an example from my own fanfiction. My character, Quinn, has never touched a weapon before the apocalypse and so I wrote a chapter where her brother Milo, who was in a gang so he knows how to use one, and Michonne teach her. And throughout the story she struggles with her aim and prefers to use her daggers instead. Eventually she gets better but she isn't amazing and badass at the beginning.

See where I'm going with this? Make it realistic and give your character time to develop their skills! And if you're thinking: but I don't even know how use a gun, so how can I write a chapter about learning how use one? Well, then I recommend the site: WikiHow. If you go to this site and search for: How to shoot a handgun you will find a very precise description of how to do so, complete with pictures. Plus, for those who aren't english, the words are simple and easy to understand!

Guns:

Guns are important. Especially earlier on when there were still bullets around we see the group use them a lot. Here are some guns used in the show and their names:

*Just a quick note, I am no weapon expert either, so forgive me if I make a mistake.

Other weapons:

Guns aren't the only thing that could save your ass when facing walkers. There are many other weapons that could be absolutely awesome to use. Here are some examples:

- Machete

- Axe

- Throwing knife

- Chinese Ring Daggers

- Hunting knife

- Sickle

- Folding knife

- Pocket knife

- Spear

- Hatchet

- Pitchfork

Everyday items:

Sometimes your character doesn't have a weapon. They are in a house and are attacked and need something to hit that bastard with on the head. Here is a list of everyday items that could be used as a weapon:

- Scissors

- Kitchen knife

- Crowbar

- Pool stick

- Golf club

- Frying pan

- Wrench

- Hammer

- Lamp

- Glass

- Hockey stick

- Pipe

- Baseball bat

- Police Baton

- Flower bottle

- Candlesticks

And many more...

Choosing the Right Weapon

Choosing the right weapon for your character is very important. It might not seem like it at the beginning but the right weapon can change certain ways your character develops.

The weapon your character uses becomes part of their identity. Just like with all of the main characters on TWD have their signature weapon, your character needs one too. They don't necessarily need to use the same weapon all the time but make it notable what type of weapon your character prefers to use. If they prefer knives, make it known.

Weapon Development

While Rick always had his colt python and now Judith has it, Daryl has gone through a few different crossbows. If your character's weapon has a special meaning to them, then make sure that's known to your reader. Again, if they prefer to use a certain weapon like Daryl with a crossbow, make it important that they try to use that specific weapon as much as they can.

Your character might also start with a really basic weapon, like a baseball bat, and over time they might change things on the bat to make it more effective. Like wrapping it in barbed wire... *cough* Negan *cough*. These simple details can show how things change throughout your story.

We hope this was helpful!
