As pink, orange and yellow began painting the night sky, Carlisle had finally convinced Alice to take a break from watching over Jackie. Although he was skeptical that her prognosis would change, he reluctantly agreed to look over Jackie himself if it meant Alice would get some relaxation.
Carlisle and Edward sat in his office, searching books and the internet for anything they could find about Renesme. Jackie remained still, lying on a table behind them. Carlisle couldn't help but feel somewhat responsible for Jackie's death. He blamed himself for not getting to her faster and was struggling with being in the room with her.
Suddenly there was a loud pop behind him. Carlisle's head shot up, a confused look on both Edward's and his face.
"What was that?" Alice screeched from somewhere upstairs before she quickly flashed into the room. Jasper and Esme where hot on her heels.
Thump.
Everyone's breathing hitched as the swelling and bruising on Jackie's face disappeared before their eyes.
Thump thump.
"Did you hear that?" Jasper asked.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
"My god," Carlisle murmured. "Her heart is trying to restart."
It was slow at first, maybe only a few beats a minute, but slowly Jackie's heart began a steady beat.
"I knew she'd come back to us," Alice smiled before running off to grab Jackie some new clothes.
Looking her over, Carlisle made a couple quick assessments. Even though she laid completely still, there was no mistaking the sound of blood pulsing through her veins. The venom appeared to be working as even the incision along her torso was starting to heal.
"I think the popping noise was her ribcage healing," Carlisle concluded.
"Someone should call Emmett," Esme instructed.
Edward shook his head. "Unfortunately, it's not that simple," he said.
"What do you mean?" Esme asked, her eyebrows knitted in confusion.
"What he means is, that moronic brother of ours smashed his phone in to smithereens," Jasper explained.
"It's true," Alice confirmed as she walked back into the office. "I had a vision earlier."
Suddenly all the things Alice had been carrying fell from her hands. A distant look crossed her face as she slumped forwards. Jasper rushed to her side.
"What is it," he asked. "What did you see?"
"It's Emmett," Edward explained hearing Alice's thoughts. "He still thinks Jackie is dead and he doesn't want to live without her."
Alice nodded in agreement. "He's heading to Italy to expose himself so that the Volturi will kill him."
"Carlisle," Esme breathed. "We have to stop him."
"Don't worry," Jasper drawled as he began to walk out. "I'll find him."
"In the meantime, maybe I can try and put a hold on his credit and debit cards," Carlisle suggested.
Esme frowned. "I really hope we can stop him in time."

A scowl crossed Emmett's face as he looked up at the sky. It looked like it was going to be sunny today. He would need to find a place to hide till the sun went down and not to mention, a shirt.
Emmett started the long walk out of the forest, hoping that maybe he'd find an abandoned hunting cabin along the way. Suddenly Emmett yelled out, dropping to his knees, clutching his head in his hands. There was a bright white light surrounding him and his brain felt like it was going to explode.
Emmett.
And just as quickly as it had happened, it was all over. Dazed, Emmett wondered if that had happened at all. Then again, what was that.
Looking over to his right, Emmett was happy to see exactly what he had been hoping to find. It was more of a shack than a cabin, but it would do. Ignoring the locks, Emmett yanked open the door, allowing himself in and went and sat down on the rusted cot. The springs squealed in objection to his weight and for a moment he wondered if the thing would hold him.
Leaning back against the wall, he stretched his legs out in front of him. For the first time it hit him. She was really gone and he was really alone. His heart felt broken and his soul felt empty. He was resolved even more to go to Italy. There was no way he could go on for eternity feeling this way.
He sighed before slowly closing his eyes. He knew he couldn't sleep but he could at least try and relax before the sun went down. And as soon as it did, he would be on a plane to Volterra.

Jackie could feel herself toss and turn- writhing in pain. Only she wasn't. She wanted to scream out in agony, only she couldn't. It was torturous, just as Emmett said it would be.
She could hear everyone talking around her. They had thought she was dead, but now they knew she wasn't. Ignoring the pain, Jackie tried to focus on the voices around her. Where was Emmett, she wondered.
She could hear Alice talking. It sounded like she'd had a vision of Emmett and he was going to... kill himself?
Jackie screamed internally. Somehow she needed to stop Emmett. I'm alive she thought. He needs to know I'm alive.
Suddenly it was as if she could see him. He was bloodied and shirtless, walking in a forest. Emmett dropped to the ground, clutching his head and screaming in pain. Emmett, she called out to him- but he was gone.
Things around her had gone quite but she didn't know for how long. It felt like hours later when she finally heard a phone ringing and Alice answering. Jackie could tell it was Jasper. He hadn't found Emmett yet but he could tell he was close. He was concerned because the sun was about to go down and he didn't know if he could get to Emmett before he tried to leave for Italy.
Jackie had to do something. She couldn't let Emmett kill himself. She was alive, damnit! He should be sitting next to her, holding her hand and waiting for her to wake up. She needed him here.
She concentrated on him again. Come on, come on, come on, she yelled. Where is he?
Suddenly she could see him again. He was sitting in a hunting shack, but he looked like he was getting ready to leave.
No! She yelled at him. I'm alive. I love you. You should be here with me.
The connection had lasted a little longer this time, but it was gone again. Jackie sighed, she hoped Jasper was close.
***
Jasper pulled out his cell phone and dialed his wife.
"Have you found him yet?" Alice asked as soon as she picked up.
Jasper sighed. "Not yet, but I'm getting close," he said. "I found John," Jasper told her. "Or at least, what's left of him."
"Do I even want to know?" Alice cringed.
"Nope."
"All right," Alice replied. "I'm sure you'll find him soon."
"Yeah," Jasper agreed. "I'm just worried I won't get to him before the sun sets."
The couple ended their call and Jasper continued to hunt for his brother. With as big as Emmett was, it was impressive that he didn't leave behind a bigger trail, Jasper mused. He walked a few more feet but froze when he heard a horrific scream.
He had never actually heard his brother scream before, but there was no doubt in his mind- it was Emmett.
***
Looking out the window, Emmett smiled. The sun was beginning to set and soon he would be on his way to Volterra. He was ready to end his grief and begin another life with her. Even if it meant he had to surrender everything in this world just to be with her again. He smiled at the thought of being reunited with his love in the afterlife.
Suddenly he clutched his head again, screaming out in agonizing pain for the second time that day.
No!
He could hear someone screaming at him.
I'm alive! The voice said. I love you.
Emmett squeezed his eyes shut, the searing white hot pain in his head was too much. It occurred to him however that this wasn't his pain, it was hers.
"Jackie," he whispered. She was in transition.
You should be here with me.
