( flashbacks will be in italics )
Peyton and Chad decided to stay home, huddled up in bed all day. She was currently reading, while he was going over song lyrics in his notebook. As she read, a thought came to her mind. She just wanted to know how he was doing or if he ever got the chance.
So she closed her book and looked over at him, "Did you talk to Luke?"
"No, actually. He wasn't home." He simply replied. He noticed Peyton's hand was placed on her stomach and she was distraught from the conversation. Chad placed his hand over her's, "You ok?"
She shrugged, "It's just the more time pass, the closer I am to—"
"Don't think about it." He interrupted her, "Think about the closer we are to our wedding day. Because that's where we're headed and nothing's going to stop that."
As he came to the end of his sentence, the baby started kicking. His face just lit up and Peyton saw it. She was happy. She knows it's been difficult for Chad to feel happy about the baby and so seeing his face, just made her happy.
"Is there a chance you'd want to know the gender?" Peyton ask, staring down at their hands.
Chad immediately shook his head, "I want to be surprised."
Peyton nodded understandingly as she moved onto the next question, "Have you chose your best man yet?"
"Yeah. Ashely. Have you chose your maid of honor?" He answered, following up with another question.
Peyton slowly nodded, "Brooke."
"And Haley's ok with that?" Chad raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah . . . she really is a good friend." Peyton spoke softly.
"I know you aren't the best baker, but I thought we could make cookies today." He switched subjects.
"Ha ha—" Peyton nodded, "But yeah."

Chad had turned on some music. He played I Don't Wanna Be by Gavin DeGraw. Peyton has many favorites but this for sure is one of her favorites. She sent Chad a smile as the song begin. They were both pulling equipment and ingredients out for the cookies.
As Chad stated before, he knows Peyton isn't good when it comes to making food but he didn't care. He just wanted to spend as much time with her as possible, even if it meant eating her horrible cookies in the end.
Peyton was mixing the batter as Chad poured them both glasses of water. He then carried the glasses over and set them down on the counter. He picked up some chocolates from a bowl that was next to them and put them in the batter as Peyton continued to mix.
"You think it's ready to be made?" Chad took a sip of some of his water.
"I don't know. . . " Peyton dipped her finger in the batter, "Why don't we see." She pulled her finger out and brought it up to Chad's lips.
Chad parted his lips, letting her finger go in and as she pulled it out, he took the batter off. He let the taste dance in his mouth. His expression wasn't really that bad. "I like it." He told his fiancé.
"Really?" Her eyes grew wide. She was surprised, she usually isn't good at making anything.
Chad nodded with a smile and Peyton smiled back at him. They formed the batter into balls after they pre-heated the oven. Once they formed all of them, Chad slid the tray into the oven. Peyton then put the timer on and so then they just waited. They waited in the living room while they talked.
They haven't had a moment like that in forever. One where it's quiet, sweet, and just the two of them. It was like old times when they just started dating. You know, like moving from friends to boyfriend and girlfriend. It was a huge step for everyone. But like then, he was looking at her the exact same way.
Head tilt, doughy eyes, and a small smile. It didn't matter how small or big his was, he was happy. They were both laughing about something when the timer went off, signaling it was time to take the cookies out.
Chad rose from the couch and headed back to the kitchen. He slid on the oven mitt and opened the oven up. He soon pulled the tray out and closed the oven back, resting the tray of cookies on the stove.
Peyton had began to make her way over to Chad as he began to use a spatula to remove the cookies from the tray onto a plate. Once all the cookies were on the plate cooling off, Peyton felt a kick in her stomach once again. She quickly put her hand on her stomach and smiled to herself.
Chad looked over, furrowing his eyebrows, "What?"
Peyton gestured for him to come close. He did as he was told and squatted down. He then pressed his hand on Peyton's stomach and as soon as he felt the baby kick again, he just like Peyton couldn't help but smile.
It was the most innocent thing in the world and though times are currently hard, he couldn't help but feel joy in that moment.
Who wouldn't?
