->Chapter One<-
It was a hot day in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and there were barley any clouds. The year was 2068 and sun shone high in the sky, Its warmth to the point where it was almost a little too warm on the skin. Five friends walked down the sidewalk, all with bags or small purses slung over their shoulders. They all appeared to be young teenagers, though some seemed slightly younger. They laughed and joked with each other, carefree and happy.
"Mrs. Green is part of the Illuminati, I'm telling you!" Atlas persisted, appearing very convinced with her theory. "It's the perfect way for the illuminati to take over! They'd never suspect an orange to-"
"Nawh. She's a cult leader." Fang said loudly, causing a few people to glance in their direction. "Straight from the depths of Hell-"
"Dude, I'd know if she led a cult." Raven chimed in. "You know I rose from the depths of hell."
"Where is this conversation going?" Silver piped up, staring at Raven and Fang. "I agree with Skipper."
"Can we stop talking about Green now?" Ryft groaned, wiping her forehead. "She's our teacher next year, we're doomed. End of story."
"True." Raven and Silver agreed at the same time, then glanced at each other and giggled.
"Hey, where's Cricket?" Ryft asked, scanning the sidewalk and street.
"She was meeting us by the fancy hotel, remember?" Fang looked irritated with the sun for existing. He refused to wear light clothing, claiming it was bad for his soul. No one questioned him.
"The fancy hotel", actually named Sioux Rapids Luxury Inn, looked very out of place in comparison to the rest of the small, old town where the five friends lived. It was eleven stories high, brightly colored, and stuck out like a fire hydrant in a dead meadow.
"Gee, where could the hotel be?" Silver joked, causing Atlas to look around in mock confusion.
"I haven't the slightest clue!" Atlas looked at Ryft in fake urgency. "It's gone!!"
"You guys are hopeless." Ryft laughed, unable to stop smirking. "What are you, blind-"
Just then, there was a loud rumbling noise that stopped the teens in their tracks. It was getting louder and louder, very fast.
"What the actual f-" Fang started, but loud blaring sirens cut him off.
"Nuclear attack in bound. All citizens report to the nearest fallout shelter immediately." A loud female voice blared out of the sirens, causing Raven to hurriedly cover her ears.
Before anyone could do anything, Skipper shouted something and pointed up.
There was a large war plane flying high overhead, but there was definitely a door on the belly.
"Why are we standing around?!" Ryft screamed. "RUN!"
The teens took off towards the fancy hotel, assuming there would be some kind of fallout shelter there. People were dashing in panic all around them. Silver yelped as a stranger ran right into her, knocking her straight to the ground. Ryft hastily grabbed her arm and pulled her to her feet. The stranger didn't even look back.
The teens were so close to the hotel. They had one more block to go. Then there was a screaming whistling noise. Not one teen was confused as to what is was.
The bomb was falling.
Fang suddenly shouted something, pointing to an alleyway about four houses down. They saw someone just turn the corner into it.
"Must be a shelter! Come on!!" Fang yelled.
The teens put extra power into their sprints, as the whistling noise had been going for awhile.
As soon as the first teen turned the corner, there was a loud boom, then a growing rumble.
Silver and Atlas screamed in pure terror and dashed ahead to the end of the alley, grabbing and flinging open a metal trap door. There was a metal latter leading down into it.
Silver went first, then Raven held the door for Atlas. Fang moved to take the door for Raven, but she pointed sternly to the ladder. It would take too long if everyone did it this way. He nodded and slid down the ladder like you'd see in movies, not even touching the rungs. Ryft looked from Raven to the door in panic. The rumbling was way too loud now. "Go!" Raven had to scream to hear over the noise. Fear took over, and Ryft disappeared into the trapdoor, scrambling down the ladder with surprising speed. Raven wasted no time to jump onto the ladder and slam the metal door shut.
Just as they heard the world the loved and grew up in dissolve above them in nuclear rage.
