Chapter 2

**Sasha's Point of View**

The city skyline glittered like a web of stars from my executive office, a view that usually brought me a sense of control and satisfaction. I was Sasha Valcavik, the enigmatic CEO of Valcavik Technologies, a cutting-edge tech company with its fingers in countless high-stakes pies. To the public, I am a successful businesswoman; to those in the know, I am Nightshade, a feared and respected figure in the city's underworld.

Tonight, however, the view from my office did little to soothe the growing restlessness gnawing at me. My mind wandered as I reviewed the latest reports and financial projections, the hum of the city below a constant reminder of the world outside—a world I rarely engaged with beyond my carefully constructed facade.

The sudden wail of police sirens pulled me out of my thoughts. I glanced at the large television mounted on the wall, tuned to a local news station. The screen displayed live footage of a jewelry store, its entrance surrounded by police cars and flashing lights. The headline scrolling at the bottom read, *"Robbery Foiled by Guardian."*

I leaned closer, my interest piqued. Guardian. The name stirred a mix of frustration and curiosity within me. The hero had been particularly active lately, a constant thorn in my side as I executed my plans from the shadows. Tonight's news was no exception—Guardian had thwarted another scheme, and I couldn't ignore the growing tension between us.

As the footage continued, showing the aftermath of the heist, police officers led away several subdued figures. The news anchor's voice cut through the scene, her tone less than complimentary.

"While Guardian's intervention may have stopped the robbery," the anchor commented, "questions remain about the collateral damage caused during these so-called heroic actions. Several store windows were shattered, and merchandise was damaged in the chaos. Critics argue that Guardian's methods are becoming increasingly reckless, putting civilians and property at risk in the process."

The screen briefly showed Guardian in action, her figure striking and powerful against the backdrop of the city. Yet, the negative slant of the commentary left a bitter taste in my mouth. It seemed the city's opinion of their hero was not as unanimous as it once was.

I leaned back in my chair, my thoughts racing. Guardian's persistent interference had become a significant obstacle, and I could feel the weight of my frustration building. I turned my gaze back to the city, the twinkling lights reflecting the turmoil simmering within me. My life is a constant balancing act between maintaining my public image and orchestrating my covert operations as Nightshade. Each failed scheme or disrupted plan only heightened the sense of isolation that accompanied my double life.

As I watched the broadcast, my mind churned with strategies to neutralize Guardian's influence, to reclaim control of the city's narrative. The frustration gnawed at me, a reminder of the ever-present dangers of playing both sides. But as always, the game must continue.

As I absently traced patterns on my desk, the door to my office opened, and my assistant, Veronica, stepped in. "Ms. Valcavik, there's an urgent matter that requires your attention, Hector is on his way," she said, her tone professional and steady.

I waved her in with a tired gesture. "Okay, Veronica."

Veronica approached with her usual calm efficiency. "You seem stressed, Ms. Valcavik. Shall I get you a glass of wine? It might help you unwind."

I nodded appreciatively. "Yes, that would be wonderful. Thank you."

Veronica moved to the small bar set up in the corner of the office. She expertly poured a generous glass of red wine and brought it to me. "Here you go, Ms. Valcavik," she said, offering the glass with a reassuring smile.

"Thank you, Veronica," I said, accepting the glass and taking a slow, deliberate sip. The warmth of the wine spread through me, providing a brief respite from the stress gnawing at the edges of my mind.

Before Veronica could leave, the office door burst open, and one of my henchmen, Hector, stumbled in. His face a picture of defeat, and he's breathing heavily. "Boss, we failed. The jewelry heist didn't go as planned," he announced, his voice trembling.

I set the glass down with a sigh, turning my attention to Hector. "Failed? This is becoming a trend," I said, my voice cold and controlled. "Explain."

Hector's eyes flicked nervously between me and Veronica. "We were intercepted by Guardian. She showed up before they could get away."

I stood up, my demeanor shifting as shadows began to swirl around me, dark tendrils stretching and curling in the dim light of the office. The temperature seeming to drop as I let my power seep into the room. "Guardian again," I said, my voice laced with menace. "I have no tolerance for failure."

Hector's eyes widened in fear as the shadows around me grew darker and more ominous. Veronica stood calmly beside me, her expression neutral and composed. "I—I'm sorry, Ms. Valcavik. It won't happen again," Hector stammered.

"You better hope it doesn't," I said, my tone icy. "Or next time, you might not be so fortunate." I allowed the shadows to recede, the darkness melting away as I regained my composure.

Hector nodded vigorously and backed out of the office, clearly relieved to escape my intimidating presence. Veronica, unfazed, stepped forward. "Is there anything else you need, Ms. Valcavik?" she asked gently.

"No, Veronica," I replied, my voice still firm. "That will be all."

As Hector left, I took another sip of wine, the warmth contrasting with the cold aftermath of my display of power. I turned back to the city view, contemplating the challenges that lay ahead. The world I inhabited was one of control and manipulation, where every move was calculated and every outcome carefully orchestrated. But tonight, for the first time in a long while, the control I held so tightly felt like it was slipping through my fingers.
