Falling Hard - 6.
Hunter's POV
Knock, knock, knock.
Looking at the door, I say. "Come in."
The door opens, and Nina walks in with a coffee in her hand and a brown paper bag in the other, which holds something for me inside. She brings me breakfast every morning as I get to the office before sunrise.
I am currently working on a massive project that's taking up much time, and I need to finish it before we leave."
"Hello, Mr. Westbrook. I have your coffee and bagel." She places it on the table in front of me. She pauses for a moment. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure," I watch as she shifts her weight from one foot to another, and she looks nervous. "You don't have to be afraid, Nina. We've worked closely for years and know things others don't."
Nina moves over to a chair and sits across from me. She crosses her legs. "You've been working a lot, coming in early and leaving after everyone. It's not healthy for you to work this hard."
She cares about me.
A smile spreads across my face. "I have been working hard on this contract as I need it, but once it's finalised tomorrow. I will be stepping back for a while."
"Really?" Nina smiles. "I'm glad. You should concentrate on your health. It's important too."
"Thank you, and I will." I'm going into Boss mode, I say. "I have a few things that need to be taken care of first."
"This sounds important." She grabs a pen and paper from my desk and watches me.
"There are a few positions that I need filled ASAP. So, I'll need four chefs and four maids for a Holiday House in the French Alps."
"Wow, that sounds like a fun place to go." She says, absentmindedly as she writes it down. "How long is the position?"
"Three months,"
Nina whistles. "When does the position start?"
"It starts on December 3rd and finishes on February 28th. Experience is preferred, but if they are fast learners, that will be great too."
"I'll have this posted in the next half hour." She scribbles on the notepad. "Is there anything else that you need?"
"Yes, I need all my meetings for that time frame cancelled. I'll be holidaying with my family and don't want work to get in the way. It's time for me to take a break and have fun. As Mom likes to say, we're not getting younger."
Nina laughs. "I like your Mom. She has some great phrases that I steal, too." She gathers her stuff and walks out of the room. Before she closes the door, she says. "Mike will be here in an hour for the meeting."
Shit, I forgot about that.
Mike is an ex-boyfriend of my sister, Luna. Since we were kids, he would come to me with new ideas, trying to get me to give him some money for the project. Each time, I decline his request.
Yet he still comes to me.
I'll have to tell Luna about him coming to the office. I don't want her to run into him while he's here.
I pick up the phone and call my sister. It rings a couple of times before her chirpy voice hits my ears, causing me to smile.
Luna: Hey, bro, what's going on?
Me: Is there a problem with me talking to you?
Luna: Yes, I'm guessing this has something to do with Mike?
Me: Yeah, he's coming to the office. He has another idea that he wants to run through me.
Luna: I don't get why you can't tell him to leave you alone and that you don't have time to deal with his crap.
Me: I can't just throw him out.
Luna: You should kick him to the curb like I did. You will feel much better. I'm looking forward to going to the French Alps to escape him.
Me: Does he still go to the apartment?
Luna: Yes, he won't leave me alone. Which is why I've been spending a lot more time with Ayden.
Luna and Ayden are close. At the same time, Suri and I are close. But, together the four of us can cause trouble. People call us the Fearsome Foursome. When you hurt one of us, the others will be behind that person, backing them all the way.
Even if that ends with one or all of us behind bars.
Me: I'll talk to him, Luna.
Luna: Thanks, Hunt. It means a lot that you'd do something like that for me. I'll stay in my office while he's here. Would you join me in the office when you get a couple of minutes? I need your help with a few things.
Me: Okay, I'll be there around 11:30am. Have you asked Ayden for help?
Luna: Yes, he told me that it's all perfect. I want to run this all through the Boss. I love it when you check my stuff.
Me: I love you, Lu. See you soon.
Luna: I love you, too, Hunt.
We hang up the phone, and I grab my coffee and drink it. Then I eat the bagel before going back through the papers on my desk. I write some notes and add them to the paperwork.
I'll have to get Nina to fix this up.
Once I've finished going through it, I stand up and walk to the door. I open it and move towards Nina's desk. "Mike is waiting for you in the conference room. Also, I've posted messages for the chefs and maids. I've had people interested in the jobs. I've reviewed the emails and sent you the ones with the qualifications. Those are the people that I suggest you hire for the holiday home."
"Thanks, Nina. I'll head to the conference room in a moment. With that contract with the Simons, I have added some things I want to enter. Once you've done that, can you send it to their lawyer? He wants to review it before giving it to his clients."
"Okay," she takes the paper from me and opens the files. "This won't take me long to do. Is there anything else you want me to do while you're in the meeting?"
"No, you can have an early lunch. Then I'll grab something after I've finished my meeting with Mike." I walk down the hall and see Mike in the first conference room.
Mike's back is turned to me as he paces the room. He stops as soon as he hears the door open. Moving over to the chair, he smiles at me. "Hi, Hunter. Thanks for seeing me today."
I pulled the seat out at the head of the table. "Mike, we need to stop these meetings. You've ended your relationship with my sister, and every time you've asked me to look at these investments, I've declined. What do you want?"
He folds his hands in front of him. "You're right. I should leave things alone, Hunter." Mike stands up and picks up his folder. "The reason why I keep coming back is so I can remember the way things were before my parents died." He heads to the door.
"Mike?" I stand and move towards him. "Does Luna know about your parents?"
"No," He shakes his head. "I was going through a bad time when I broke up with her, and telling her about my parents was the last thing on my mind. I could handle everything alone, but once Luna left, I hit rock bottom."
"You should tell her this." I step out of the conference room. "I'm heading to her office now. Come with me and talk to her."
"Is she going to be okay with this?" He seems nervous.
"I'll make sure everything goes fine." Walking through the halls, we talk about one of the football games we went to while he was dating Luna.
It doesn't take us long to reach her office. Knocking on the door, I wait for my sister to grant me access. "Come in."
I open the door and enter the room with Mike. "You should talk to him, Lu. There are a few things you need to talk about."
Luna shoots me a glare. "No," she crosses her arms. "I'm not going to talk to him. He had time to talk to me, but I was just someone he could hurt."
Mike steps forward. "Please, Lu Lu. I'm ready to tell you what's going on. I will leave you alone if you're unhappy with what I've said. That includes your brother."
"Fine," she points to the screen. "Everything I want you to look at is on the screen. If you have anything to add, please do so. I'll be taking a break to talk to Mike."
I hug her. "Thanks for giving Mike some time. I promise you won't regret it."
They walk out of the room, and I sit behind the desk and review her proposal.
I'm not going to let anyone invest in this project.
After saving the document, I sent it to my email. Then, I pick up the sticky note and write a message to my sister.
Lu,
I've gone through the proposal and I'm amazed by it. The company won't fund it, but I will. I'd prefer to be the one to back you. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Love
Hunter
Standing up, I leave the room and head to my office.
