Falling Hard - 24

Hunter's POV

The car pulls in front of Grenoble University Hospital, before it's parked, I get out of the car and run to the hospital's entrance. The doors open, and I enter the building. I head straight for the desk. "Can I get some information on Keegan Jennings?"

The female receptionist types the name into the computer. "I'm sorry to tell you this, but the name isn't coming up. Are you sure she's at this hospital?"

"Yes, I am."

"I'll make some enquiries and get back to you shortly." The receptionist writes a few things on the paper and then starts ringing around, trying to find the information on Keegan.

Moving over to a seat, I pull my phone out of my pocket and call Wallace. It rings a couple of times before he answers,

Wallace: Hello?

Me: Wallace, I want all the videos from the kitchen to the halls from the time of the assault to the time Keegan went to you. You might have to follow her movements, that way I will know what happened to Keegan.

Wallace: I've been through some of the footage. There's a glitch with the videos. Leaving out two to three minutes. I believe this is the time that Keegan was attacked.

Me: I want every security person to report to me when I return to the house. I will call you when I'm on the way home. Hopefully, Keegan will be with me.

Wallace: Okay,

Me: Let's keep this conversation down for now. I don't want to spook anyone.

Wallace: Will do, Sir. I will hear from you soon.

Hanging up the phone, I turn towards the desk and see the woman still on the phone.

A man wearing a black suit and hat walks through the door. His eyes scan the room, and when they land on me, he walks towards me. "Are you looking for Keegan Jennings?"

"Yes, I am. How did you know?"

The guy takes a seat next to me. "Wallace told me that he was on the phone with you when Keegan went unconscious. He also said that you would check on her." He stands up. "I'll take you to her room."

I follow him through the corridors to the lift. He presses the button, and we wait for it. Holding my hand out to him, I say, "I'm Hunter Westbrook."

"Zane Coleman," Zane shakes my hand. "You need to do a better job of protecting her, Hunter. When you find out who she is, you will understand why it is important to protect her."

"I promise to keep her safe, Zane."

The door to the lift opens, and we step inside. Zane presses the button for the 6th floor. He looks around the lift, not saying a word to me.

We remain quiet until we reach the waiting room. Zane sits and turns towards me. "Keegan is with the Doctor. She won't be much longer."

"What room is she in? My sister, Suri, is coming here, and she'd want to know where Keegan is."

"It's room 234. Keegan will be in a private suite."

"Thanks, I'll call my sister. She wants to be kept updated on Keegan."

A smile spreads across Zane's face. "I'm glad Keegan's making friends with the people she's working for. It's been a long time since I've seen her carefree."

"I love getting to know Keegan. Something about her draws you in, and I don't feel like ever letting her go."

"I'm glad to hear that, Hunter. After everything Keegan's been through, she needs someone to have her back. Also, someone who will help heal the pain she's hiding from everyone."

Keegan and I are both going through the same pain. We're good at hiding things from people. Maybe we can heal each other.

"I'll be right back." Standing, I pull my phone out of my pocket and call Suri. The phone rings a couple of times before she answers.

Suri: Hunter, is everything okay?

Me: Keegan's getting attended to by the Doctor.

Suri: Okay,

Me: Go to the sixth floor when you get to the hospital. Keegan's room number is 234.

Suri: Thank you, I'm about ten minutes away. Do you need me to get anything?

Me: No, I am good. See you soon.

Putting the phone in my pocket, I return to the waiting room. I sit close to Zane. "How long have you known Keegan?"

Zane leans forward, placing his hands on his legs. "I've known Keegan for six years. I met her through one of my clients, and I've driven her around since then. It's been a couple of years since she's been here."

"Keegan told me that she's good at snowboarding. Can you confirm that?"

Zane throws his head back and laughs. Keegan can snowboard. She can beat anyone on the slopes. Even some of the best snowboarders have eaten her dust. So, I'd be careful about a race with her."

"Damn, looks like I'll be in trouble."

"You're going to hit the slopes with her?"

"Yes, I was going to take her this weekend, but with the head injury, I'll have to wait until she gets the all clear from the Doctor." I shake my head. "I can't believe Keegan is that good on the slopes."

Zane goes through his phone and stops at a video. He turns the phone towards me. "This was Keegan three years ago. Keegan went up against Olivia Newman, the number 1 snowboarder in this country. Olivia was left in the dust, and Keegan's tricks put her to shame. Some of the tricks that Olivia's used had been taught to her by Keegan."

Keegan gets more interesting the more I get to know about her.

"Wow, I think I'm falling more for her." I look away from Zane.

I can't believe I admitted that to a stranger.

Ding, the lift door opens, and my sister steps out. She walks over to me. "Hunter, how is she?"

"We're still waiting to hear."

Suri looks towards Zane. "Hi, I'm Suri." She holds her hand out to him. Zane takes her hand. "I'm Zane."

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Suri says. Thank you for caring for Keegan while we were away."

"I did it for Keegan. She's a great woman, and I don't like hearing that she got hurt at a house she's supposed to work at. I hope something is done with that girl."

"I promise you, I will make sure Tia is punished. I've never liked that girl, but Mom likes her and we've had to put up with her since."

"Suri," I reprimand. "You shouldn't be telling Zane this. Why not? Zane seems to care about her just as much as we do. I've called the house, and Tia's gone M.I.A. She's pulling the usual stunt. She thinks we'd forget about what she did while she's gone. I won't forget this and'll make sure she's gone when she returns."

She's right. Tia will be gone as soon as she returns to the house. I'll make sure that Ayden has packed her stuff and put it close to the door.

"Excuse me," I say, pulling my phone out of my pocket. I call Ayden. It rings a couple of times before he answers.

Ayden: Hey, Asshole. When's the car coming for us?

Me: It's on its way.

Ayden: Great, what do you want?

Me: I'm at the hospital with Keegan.

Ayden: I heard. How is she?

Me: Still with the Doctor.

Ayden: Do you know what happened?

Me: Tia pushed Keegan, and she hurt her head. Keegan lost consciousness while waiting for her friend to pick her up.

Ayden: Did anyone help her?

Me: I don't think so. Tia's been showing everyone that she runs the house and that if they ignored her, they would get hurt.

Ayden: That's terrible. Do you have proof that Tia did it?

Me: The security footage has been tampered with. I will investigate when I return to the house.

Ayden: What do you need from me?

Me: Pack Tia's belongings and put them by the front door. The moment she returns to the house, I want her gone. There won't be any more chances for that woman.

Ayden: I think it's about time that Tia leaves. I turned her down recently, and now she's hanging around one of the chefs. He's been telling her things that should have been kept a secret. I'm afraid that someone is going to get hurt.

Me: Do you think it will be Keegan again?

Ayden: Yes, I've heard people talking about nuts around the house, and someone has been adding them to food. You should keep a close eye on Keegan when she comes home. If she accepts food from anyone, it could have nuts in it.

Me: I hope you're wrong, brother. If anything happens to her, I will tear everyone apart.

Ayden: I'll have to get to know Keegan. That woman has both my brother and sister wrapped around their fingers.

Me: We will join you for dinner tomorrow night.

Ayden: Okay, Luna and Mike look forward to it as well.

Me: I'll talk to you tonight.

Ayden: Okay, Mike wants to talk to you before I go.

Me: Hey, Mike.

Mike: Luna and I have been working on a proposal. Would you be willing to sit with me and go through it?

Me: I will meet you tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in the main office. We can go through it together. If I approve it, I will pass the information on to some people I know who like to invest in start-ups.

Mike: Thanks, Hunter.

Me: You're welcome. See you tomorrow.

Hitting the end call button, I move over to the waiting room. The door to Keegan's room opens at that moment, and the Doctor steps out. He moves over to us. "Keegan Jennings' family?"

"That's us," I tell the Doctor.

The Doctor looks at Zane. "Do you want them here?"

"It's fine," Zane says. "How is she?"

"It's a concussion. Keegan will wake shortly." The doctor looks at Suri and me. "Take care of Keegan."

Everyone seems to tell me that every time I see them. Keegan has a lot of people who care about her safety and well-being.

"I promise I will take care of her."

"Good," The Doctor says, placing his hand on my shoulder. You don't know how much of a treasure that woman is. If I hear something else has happened to her, I will come for the person who's put her life at risk." He walks away from me.

Zane claps the Doctor's back. "Thanks, Doctor Wilson. I will see you tomorrow."

"Doctor Wilson?" Suri says, her eyes watching as the Doctor turns around a corner. "No, way is he here. Doctor Wilson only sees high-profile patients. Who the hell is Keegan Jennings?"

I would love to know that myself.

Zane looks at us. "Are you ready to see, Keegan?"

"Yes," Suri and I say at the same time.

Suri leads the way to the room. She pushes the door open and stands on the other side of the room. She looks at Zane and says. "You know her true identity, right?"

"I do." Zane smiles at us. "When she's ready to reveal who she is, don't freak. I promise you won't be disappointed by who you are getting to know. The things she reveals are true. The one thing she's keeping a secret is her identity."

"We figured that," I say. "I'll be patient and let Keegan tell me who she is when the time is right."

While we wait for Keegan to wake, we chat about whatever comes to mind. All of a sudden, there's a moan from the bed. I move over to the light and turn it off.
