Chapter 8. Shower thoughts [Caleb]

M is like an insatiable beast. One with an unquenchable appetite.

For the entire one day that M's been living with us, the only thing that I've really been learning so far is that his stomach is a black hole. Void of a bottom.

There's no end to his hunger. And the fridge is getting emptier and fast.

It's only now turning nighttime. The pastel sky. Letting its last set of rays shine before complete darkness once again. At this pace, I'll have to go grocery shopping earlier than usual.

I'm leading M to the bathroom.

Getting Lucy off of him had shown to be more difficult than I expect.

She's been on him non-stop about his angel business. Although the disappointment shows on her face with what little progress we've made with his memories.

I got her to take a break. To focus on her homework that is due on Monday while I help M with a much-needed shower.

I glance back at M.

His head is bowing down. Bare feet, dragging along the floor. White wings, moving along.

He's still shirtless, only in his brownish trousers.

He looks a lot better than when I first found him. Less dirty and bloody. Thanks to the magic of some damp towels. Although, I think a hot and nice shower can do him some good.

Thinking about it. I might need one too. Badly. I smell like a regular inhabitant of the sewer. It's a wonder I haven't been hearing any complaints from Lucy.

We reach the bathroom.

I go over to the shower and drag the curtains to the side.

I adjust the showerhead above.

M is a lot taller than me, and I don't think another hit to the head is the healthiest thing. It certainly won't help him with the memory problem.

I show him how turning the valve starts the shower. It pipes, and a second later, water streams out.

I put my hand under the streaming water. Feeling the temperature as the water slowly heats up. I deem it good enough.

When I turn around. M is standing in the doorway stiffly.

I cough to get his attention and point to the cabinet under the sink.

"Clean towels are in there. I'll try and find you some clothes. In the meantime, just try and clean up a bit." I say.

Before I forget, I take out some shampoo and a bar of soap too.

"This is for your hair if you want to try it. It cleans out the dirt. And the soap is for the rest of your body." I place them in the holder on the wall.

He nods in reply, cocking his head a bit.

"All good," I ask.

He nods in reply.

The next thing I know. M's trousers are already pooling at his feet.

He's standing there in all his splendor. Naked as the day he was born.

I choke on my own spit.

My hand instinctively goes up to cover my eyes.

I can already feel the heat in my cheeks, turning them red.

"Oh," He says, noticing my distress. "Is this not alright?"

"No!" I force out uneasily. "I mean, yes!" It comes out louder than I want it to be. And I can't help but cringe.

"I-, we usually don't strip in front of strangers here. But it's totally cool. I mean, there's not anything to be ashamed of." I chuckle awkwardly. "It's not like I haven't seen a naked man before. Not that I'm saying I look at naked men often, you get what I mean, right?"

I peek through my fingers to see him covering his lower area with his hands. Not that I'm trying to take a look.

"Just... Yeah, I'll bring you some clothes when you've showered." I say.

I take a step forward. Ready to leave this, and never think about it twice.

I stumble over something along the way.

My hands are still covering my face. I can't see at all, which results in me almost face-planting the floor, if not for two strong arms holding me up.

I open my eyes and am met with M's own.

I can even see the tiny flecks of orange in his warm syrupy eyes.

Back when I first saw him. They had been completely dark. A dull brown. But now, they're glowing in the light.

We're close. Close enough for our breaths to entangle. And long enough to consider it inappropriate.

"Thanks," I drag out.

I rush out, slamming the door behind me. My back hits the door, and I let out a small awkward laugh.

I'm most definitely blushing like a touch-starved virgin. I need to get my act together.

Shaking it off. I take the stairs two at a time.

My room is a mess.

Clothes are lying across the floor in messy heaps. My bed, unmade. There are even plates, I don't even know how old, on my desk. Covering my laptop and countless textbooks that have seen better days.

I go over to my closet. Hoping to find anything that will fit. Although I doubt I'll find much.

I get out some sweatpants and a t-shirt too. I might have to make some holes in the back for the wings to fit through, though. For now, I guess M can go without a shirt.

I take some socks with me as well. Carrying the clothes under my arm, I go down to the bathroom again.

"M, I have some clothes for you," I knock on the door.

There's no reply from the other side, so I wait a minute.

I knock again. Worry is seeping in.

I can still hear the running water. But that's it.

"M, are you okay in there?" I open the door slightly to peek inside. Steam comes out of the bathroom the instant I open the door.

Placing the clothes on the edge of the sink, I look over at the half-closed curtains.

I see him.

He's sitting up against the wall opposite the shower. Wings shielding him, almost. His head is resting against his knees, arms wrapping around them protectively.

I can hear whimpers coming from his shaking form.

Turning off the shower. The water stills and stops.

I grab a towel and drape it over his still dripping body.

Kneeling down beside him. Getting myself wet in the process. Although, not the first time. I tell myself.

"Hey," I say softly.

He looks up at me.

He's heaving for his breath. Eyes wild and puffy, red from crying.

"What's wrong," I ask him. Touching his shoulder.

His jaw clenches, brows furrowing.

"I remember something." There's fear in his voice. It's easily noticeable. Potent in every word.

I get him up on wobbly feet, helping him sit down on the toilet seat.

I catch his eyes.

"You can tell me."

Hello,

Sorry for not uploading for almost an entire week. I've been sad and anxious about starting school next week. But it's just something I have to get through.
