Chapter 41. Somethings wrong [Michael]

There is something wrong with Luke. Perhaps it is the constant smug look on his face or maybe it is the way that he carries himself. It is almost as if he is untouchable like there is nothing to fear, nothing to be afraid of.

We are all cramped up in Tina's small car. Caleb and I are squeezed into the backseat, our shoulders and thighs touching.

Luke is sitting next to Tina in the passenger seat. His dark eyes keep meeting mine in the small mirror inside the car. His face is tight, in a way he shares the same features as someone I cannot quite place. Not yet. I can't seem to decide who it belongs to. But the creepy smile he sends me from across the seat sends a chill down my spine.

The car is quiet, except for the music playing silently in the background, volume low enough to be nothing but a small murmur.

Tina's eyes are pierced on the road, and so are Caleb's. He's staring out his side of the window, chin resting on the back of his hand.

"So Caleb," Luke breaks the silence. "I never asked, but how did you two sweethearts come across each other?"

Caleb cranes his neck to look at Luke. His chin is still resting on his hand.

The trees from outside get thinner, letting the moonlight stream into the windows of the car, basking Caleb in its glow. He looks divine, eyes bright and blue.

Caleb shrugs resolutely. "It kind of just happened." Explaining how we met to a complete stranger who has no idea of the supernatural might not be the easiest of tasks and not without giving me away either. "Maybe it was just meant to be, either way, I'm happy to have met M, even under certain circumstances."

I smile at that. Seeing Caleb bear his heart out like that is certainly something I could get used to.

"Certain circumstances you say?" Luke pokes. "Must have been something big considering you've only known each other for such a short while to be this close."

I move up my seat, situating myself further in between them. "We're still figuring everything out," I reply. I catch Caleb's eyes with my own. "All I know is that I would do everything in my power to make sure he is alright and happy."

Caleb's gaze falls off of mine. It is as if we held it any longer the moon and the stars would combust, and so would this car. Although his blues are no longer there, his hand finds my own. He squeezes my hand tight, our fingers intertwining.

Luke takes in the gesture, chuckling shortly in return.

"Young love," Luke tisks. "It's a pretty sight."

Somehow, those words make something in my mind click. They echo in my head. I've heard them before, spoken from the very same mouth, falling off of the very same tongue.

Flames stand tall. The next thing I know, smoke creeps up from beneath my feet, the dry cloud sinking into my lungs. There are screams of help, wails of pain following vicious roars of thousands upon thousands of beasts.

That is where the man steps up next to me. The familiarity is clear now. The tall figure is hunched over, a swagger in his step. His long black hair frames his slender pale face. The only thing missing is his wings, the black bat-like wings.

The small bubble that Caleb and I had created breaks. The memory brings me back to the harsh reality. The one where fear is prominent and danger is close, closer than ever before.

Mørke.

It is as if everything is finally coming into place now. The last piece of the puzzle found its place. The full picture is clear, and it is bad. I should have known sooner that Luke was not who he said he was. Instead, evil has been brought closer to Caleb and Tina and we're taking it right back to Caleb's house.

"Is something wrong, M?" Mørke bites, smiling, teeth sharp.

I clear my throat, shaking my head in reply. Mørke leans back in his seat, taking Tina's hand from off of the gear shift. He leads her hand up to his mouth, giving her hand a chaste kiss.

"You're such a romantic," Tina comments on Mørke's action, unbeknownst to who exactly is sitting right next to her.

"What can I say," Mørke says. "I enjoy a good love story, a tragic one is my favorite."

I lick my lips, staring out the front window of the car. I try to spot how close to Caleb's home we are, but it's too dark and the long stretch of road and trees all look the same.

"Tina, how close are we to Caleb's house?" I ask. The faster we get out of this car, the more distance we make between us and Mørke, the better.

"We're almost there," She replies, taking a turn. "5 minutes tops."

"We can walk the rest of the way, I'm sure your mother would like you home on time," I offer. "She's probably already worried about you."

Caleb looks over at me confusedly, a dark brow raised in question.

"Don't worry, It's fine." She flicks her wrist in a dismissive gesture. "I don't mind driving you guys home, besides I might need to borrow your toilet Caleb, is that alright with you?"

"Yeah," Caleb replies. "That's no problem."

I nudge his foot with mine, trying to get his attention without drawing too much to myself. I don't want Mørke to know I'm on to him.

"What?" Caleb whispers.

Before I can whisper anything back to him Mørke interrupts.

"Isn't it a bit quiet in here?" His fingers slide over the buttons of the radio. "What about some music?" He turns up the volume. The song's instruments blend together to create an upbeat rhythm, the girl singing matching the beat perfectly.

Mørke starts humming along to the tune.

With the way that I'm glaring at the back of his head, there should be a big gaping hole right about now. But he's still alive and breathing. Whatever he has planned, it cannot be anything good, and we're heading straight towards our only safe haven from him and his followers.

I was a fool to ever think this was a good idea. I need to get Caleb and Tina out of this and away before anything bad can happen. I need to tell Caleb as soon as possible and away from suspicious ears.

Caleb's house comes into view. The car's headlights form a trail to the front door. The trees jolt awake as we exit the car. The wind picks up its speed, cold air hugging us tight as we go up to the house. Tina is following us, walking next to Caleb while Mørke is slacking behind, staring at us from the car.

The crunching of gravel starts again as Mørke makes it up to us. The hairs on the back of my neck rise.

"Mind if I come in as well," Mørke asks. "It's rather cold out here to wait."

"Yeah, sure-" Caleb says at the same time that I reply with a curt no.

Caleb is obviously confused by my actions if the look he's giving me is anything to go by. If only I could tell him who the actual man standing in front of him is without raising awareness that I know.

The door unlocks and the light in the entrance turns on. We all gather inside as Tina goes straight for the bathroom, leaving us with Mørke in the entrance hallway. The tension rises, not that there isn't a reason for it to do so.

"You mind giving me a glass of water?" Mørke asks Caleb.

Caleb nods as he heads into the kitchen, I follow him, stopping him as he goes to grab a glass from the cupboard above the sink. I turn on the tap, hopefully, the water will drown out the sounds to Mørke of what I'm about to tell Caleb.

I grab Caleb's bicep, pulling him closer. It's him," I whisper.

"What?" He asks, voice low.

"Luke. His name is not actually Luke, it's Mørke and he's the reason I'm here, I fought against him. He is also the one who's sending all those beasts to kill us," I tell. "He's out to kill every angel he comes across."

"You remember?" Caleb quirks his brow. "And you let him come into the house."

"I didn't have the opportunity to tell you once I remembered, but it was something he said," I reply. "Either way we need to get you and Tina out of here."

Suddenly the kitchen light flickers above, sending us into momentary darkness. The water stops running, and the low humming of the fridge turns off. The light comes back a moment later, revealing Mørke in the kitchen with us.

"You're one lucky guy Caleb," Mørke is standing by the counter, leaning up against it as he stares at us coldly. "Having someone like Tina in your life, and someone like M on your side." His shoes click on the floor as he moves closer to us slowly.

Mørke pauses for a second, a thought flashing across his intense features. "Sometimes I wish I was normal, to have someone like Tina around, a lover and a friend," He cocks his head. "But I have my duties to follow, and a promise to keep. I was never born to just live a normal life. I was made for so much more, I was made to kill every single angel that has graced the sky and ground of this earth and I'm going to follow through with that."

I remember back to that fateful night. Our battle in the skies. The rain had thundered down on me and my people as we fought the wicked beasts. It had been a battle for our lives, the last surviving angels trying to escape the terrors Mørke had brought with me as their leader. That was before I fell.

Who knows where they might be now.

"You really thought you could escape me, Michael?" Mørke growls. "I've been on you ever since you fell down here, and now, I will make sure you die here along with your little human."

There is the sound of glass breaking from the living room, followed by the roars of beasts, million pieces of glass crunching under their sharp claws.

"But don't worry, maybe I'll spare Tina, that sweetheart."

I push Caleb behind me as the beasts make their way into the kitchen.

"Caleb," I say through clenched teeth. "Run!"
