Chapter 1: Brothers
»»»»
560 years later
Legolas sat up in the branch of a tree, his back was leaning against the trunk of the tree while one of his langs dangled over the side, the other one pulled up against his chest with his hands clasped together over his knee.
He closed his eyes as a soft wind began to blow.
This was his favorite time of year, when summer was ending and fall was beginning.
The leaves were changing from green to red, the wind blew a few leaves from the branches and sent them swirling through the air.
Legolas smiled as he watched the leaves spin towards the ground.
The sound of a horn blowing caused Legolas to lean forward.
His eyes brightened and he began climbing down the tree.
He jumped from the lowest hanging branch and landed softly on his feet.
Legolas ran through the trees, the wind stirred up the leaves around him.
Legolas stopped beside the elven road that led to the entrance of the palace.
He watched as the Forest Guard arrived, his blue eyes searching for one individual elf.
"Thalion!"
Legolas called out.
A tall ellon broke away from the other elves and smiled at his younger brother.
Legolas ran towards him and the two brothers embraced.
"What happened Thalion? How many spiders were there? Did you kill them all? Was anyone stung? What-"
"For Eru's sake Las! I just returned from fighting spiders for two months, relieved to be returning home after a long struggle, only to be attacked by my brother asking a hundred questions!"
Legolas crossed his arms.
"What is wrong brother? Have spiders proven too difficult for you to handle?"
"If you had faced these spiders before Las, then you would understand."
Thalion and Legolas walked side by side down the path.
"If you had asked father of I could accompany you this time I would have faced these spiders for myself and then I would understand."
Thalion's smile lessened slightly.
"We have talked about this before Las. You will join me and the Forest Guard when adar says that you are ready."
"But I am ready! I practice with my bow every day!"
"You will need more than a bow to aid you in a fight Las."
"I know that Thalion. I train with my knives and sword every day too."
Thalion sighed.
"You are skilled with your weapons Las, especially for an elf so young."
Legolas smiled.
"But that is also the reason why adar will not allow you to join the Guard. You are still very young Las. You must wait until you are older."
"You were fighting at my age!"
Legolas stopped walking and looked up at his brother.
"You had already joined the Guard! Why can I not do the same?"
"I had to join the Guard Las, you know that."
"I still do not see why I cannot."
"As I told you before Las, you are still too young, and it is adar's decision."
Legolas sighed in frustration.
Thalion looked up at the overhanging branches and sighed as well.
"Oh Elbereth..."
He mumbled.
"Alright Las, you win. I will speak with adar and ask him if you can join the Guard with me."
Legolas looked up at him in disbelief.
"You will?"
Thalion nodded.
Legolas beamed and once again hugged his brother.
Thalion chuckled and returned his embrace.
"Remember Las, I said that I would speak with father, but do not expect him to say yes."
"Alright!"
Legolas smiled and the two of them continued walking towards the palace.
"So how many spiders did you kill? Was there a lot? Did you get injured? What-"
Thalion grabbed Legolas and slung him onto his shoulder.
Legolas laughed as Thalion carried him to the palace.
"Legolas; you are the most annoying elf I have ever met!"
"And you are the grumpiest elf I have ever met."
Legolas looked at the trees, they continued to get further and further away as he was carried by his brother.
He suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.
The wind picked up sending leaves flying everywhere.
Legolas' eyes widened in fear as he heard a voice in the air.
He couldn't understand what it was saying but his ears picked up a single word,
Legolas
Legolas gripped Thalion's shoulder tighter.
"Not so hard Las! I will not let you fall."
"Do you not hear it?"
"Hear what?"
"The voice."
"What voice? Las are you well?"
He doesn't hear it.
Thalion set Legolas back down on his feet.
He knelt down in front of Legolas, his eyes narrowed in concern as he studied his face.
"Legolas? Is something wrong?"
"I heard a voice."
"What do you mean? What did it say?"
"I do not know. All I heard was my name."
Thalion stood up and looked out from where they had come.
"Thalion?"
"I'm sure it is nothing Las."
"But-"
"I will double the watches on our borders Las. Do not worry, if there is something out there we will find it."
Legolas looked at him uncertainly.
"Everything will be fine Las. Now let's go inside."
Thalion placed his hand firmly on the back of Legolas' shoulder and guided him inside the palace.
Everything will be fine.
Legolas told himself.
You have nothing to worry about.
Legolas heard the voice one more time in his head.
Legolas
He quickened his pace and hurried into the safety of his home.
