Acknowledge

This is...unreal...

I stare at my reflection in our small bathroom mirror.

I recognize who it is, but can't acknowledge what it has become.

Memories flooded back from last week's life changing event.

*****

As I triumphantly raise and show my prized blue iris magnet, Earth celebrates.

Soon, the sweet sound was replaced by complaints and arguments by both other sections. Sky and Nature students were so riled up, some started to madly descend the stairs while others began to jump and wildly throw themselves from the wall.

Target= Me.

As the stampeed made its way at me, an authoritive voice resonated above all the ruckus.

"If as much a single hair on her head is touched, I swear by my life I'll make you plead for death once I'm through with you!"

The thousand students froze in their tracks. They know fully well that Hunter's threats live up and even exceed their expectations.

Merely a few feet away, I witnessed all of their hateful and repulsive stares.

Surprisingly, out of nowhere, a group of Earth stood before me with its leader shielding me from view.

My eyes widened out of shock.

"...R...Rex!?..."

He spoke not turning around. "Don't think for a second I consider you any important now. It's simply a duty to arrive first since we're speed."

I felt a presence behind. Looking over my shoulder, I recognized Frank and his strength group.

Entire Earth stood with me.

"Sir Cloud!" A student shouted. "This is unacceptable! There's no way an Earth can win against a Sky, especially someone like Miss Aurelia. What kind of ability was that anyway?"

I scanned the crowd in search for that student. Following the voice...

There.

The student had taken a step forward. It was a Sky girl. She wore a doctor's lab coat, just like Max's. Her hair neatly pinned up.

So she's Sky's doctor.

"It's a trick." She stated assuredly. "Was that EVEN an ability? Obviously Earth is just desperately trying to gain some kind of power in this school."

"What a miserable theory Aqua."

A hand rested on my shoulder. I turned to see it was Max. He chuckled. "Coming up with any kind of doubt won't help change the clear fact of who won." He glanced at a crying Aurelia. "And who lost."

She frowned. "What's the matter Max? Afraid I'll uncover the truth?"

"Not at all. I'd love to hear what your mere brain created for us to pull off such impossible trickery. You've always had such a wild imagination."

"Doctors enough!" Commanded Hunter. "Sir Leaf and I will be the ones to decide."

"Although the answer is quite inevitable..." Added Seth.

Both sections started arguing again. Agreeing that this matter should be told to adults.

Hunter slammed a hand on his desk, quickly silencing everyone. "Nothing done in here is to be shared! Rule mentioned since day one! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

The students were too intimidated to answer.

Hunter was heaving in anger.

He really hates being disobeyed.

"CLASS DISMISSED!"

It took a moment for the students to snap out of their paralyzed state and start filing out the stadium.

"Dustbell stays behind."

Once Hunter said this, Earth froze. They seemed unsure of whether to leave without me...also in the care of the Chiefs.

Since all their eyes were on me, I gestured confidently for them to proceed; in which to my surprise, all of them actually complied.

I stood still amongst the flowing crowd.

Seems that Aurelia had fainted as two Sky students carried her out, with Aqua on tail.

As each passed me by, I received scoffs, spits and shoves.

It took a whole bunch of will power for me to not reach and grab their throats...

My hands turned to fists by my sides. One tightening the magnet.

Control yourself Nanette. Lashing out now will only bring complications.

I took a deep breath and tried rubbing off the disgusting saliva spots from my face with my black leather sleeve.

After a while, the buzzing noise of students finally ceased.

Looking up, Hunter was frantically pacing around his desk while Seth on the contrary, was seated, staring at my location.

Realization hit me.

I'm a...Chief?

Hunter's head snapped towards me. "Not. Yet."

I scowled at him. "What's your problem?"

He points at me agitatedly. "You're my problem!"

"What did I ever do to you!?"

My built up anger is surfacing.

Stop Nanette.

"For starters, not showing respect towards a Chief. Like right now!"

"I would if you'd act like one."

Hunter stopped. Tone deep and menacing. "What did you say?"

I looked at him with a frown.

I would if you'd ACT like one.

He walked and started descending the stairs.

A powerful silence overtook the stadium.

I stood firmly as he pushed the door open and continued his march toward me.

My eyes never wavered. I looked up and stared him down as he stopped dead in front of me.

"What are you gonna do? Break my arm? Go ahead. That's how you get respect right? By making people fear you."

He brought his face intimidatingly close to mine and snarled. "I'd rather make people fear me than pity me."

My eyebrows scrunched together and my fists trembled by my sides. My eyes began to water out of pure anger. "At least people care about me."

"At least I'll have a mother who still will."

I gasped and chocked.

My fists no longer shook...my body was frozen.

My chest.

It hurts.

I stepped back, wide eyed.

Hunter's eyes widened as well once he saw me and realized what came out of his mouth.

My breathing was shaky. I tried as fast as I could to not let the escaping tears slide down my cheeks.

Mom...

I looked at him with recognition.

You listened to my thoughts this morning.

Hunter tried saying something, but couldn't come up with the words.

I panicked. "What else do you know about me!?"

"Dustbell I...I'm-"

"That's enough you two." Seth appeared between us.

He looked at Hunter. "I know declaring her as a Chief will bring chaos. Not only will it affect the school, but also the system in which we all are ruled by. But we can't deny it. Entire Earth has agreed and she managed a victory without yet a defeat. She's eligible."

I payed no attention to their conversation. My mind only focused on one thing now. The most important person in the whole world to me.

Mom...

Mom...

I have to go. I have to see her.

As I nonchalantly turned towards the exit, a hand grabbed my arm.

"Nanette...you can't leave yet."

I stared at the green sleeve holding me back. "And why not? I have more urgent matters-"

He brought me closer to him with a pull. My red eyes for having teared up looked straight into his delicately commanding light green ones.

"You must know the basics of being Chief." He softly said.

After a few minutes in thought, I looked away from him defeated. "Fine."

As I took back my arm rather imprudently for them restraining me here, a bit of guilt nudged at my stomach at having seen a slight sudden pain cross Seth's face as a result of the gesture.

I sighed.

I just wanna be next to Mom right now.

"Pardon my rudeness, Sir Leaf."

"It's...understandable." He slowly answered.

I could feel Hunter's burning stare, but I had no desire in looking at him.

He grit his teeth and marched towards the exit.

Seth reached out. "Hunter wai-"

"You teach her." He bellowed and exited the stadium.

Better for me.

Seth sighed and brought one hand to rub his temples. "Him and his mood swings..." He muttered.

I crossed my arms and looked at Seth. "What are you gonna teach me?"

His attention was immediately back. "I'll just briefly inform you of your status now as Earth's Chief."

Stashing the eye magnet in my pocket, I looked at him expectantly. "I'm listening."

Seth started pacing around. "Okay. For starters, you will now be responsible for every Earth student's actions. You must confront, punish how you seem necessary and deal with the conflict. Resolve the issue."

I nodded.

That's fine. Earth's a calm class.

"You must look out for your subordinates. Guide them. Know each personally. The leaders of each group are your chess pieces, choose them wisely. You are allowed to select, demote or promote anyone of your section. The doctor is your right hand, very important as he's the second in charge if you're not present. Still, he must follow your rules."

Okay...the doctor and leaders are important.

"You will receive a new uniform, and your workstations will change. These will be made throughout the weekend. As for your-"

Man...will all these changes really happen? Next week is gonna be so strange...I wonder how it'll all play out...my stomach...I'm getting nervous...

I came back as a pair of fingers snapped in front of my face.

"Nanette? Are you listening?"

"Oh uh...yeah." I smiled sheepishly.

He chuckled, placing his arms behind him and continued to speak casually. "Being Chief is an important job at this school. You will be payed and receive your check every friday-"

"Wait what." I blurted out.

Seth looked at me unfazed. "You will be payed."

I placed a hand on my chest. "How much?"

He looked away in thought. Calculating. "Enough to let you make changes for comfort and progress to your section's areas and still have plenty for yourself."

I exhaled in happiness. My free hand covering my mouth.

I could help Mom. Treatment. I can pay.

My eyes started to glisten.

I closed them. Taking in the joy.

Thank you. Thank you so much.

As I opened to see, Seth was looking at me with a caring smile.

"One last thing before you go."

I nodded, clasping my hands in front of me.

"Your symbol and name as Chief."

Snap.

Noticing me struggle in thought, Seth chuckled. "Don't worry. Once you come up with one, tell me."

"Thank you."

"You may go now."

I was about to bow my head until he stopped me.

"You're a Chief now. We are equal." He winked. "Now you can call me Seth."

I smiled at him, nodding.

Then turned and exited the stadium.

Frank and Max stood outside, waiting for me.

As soon as I approached them, to my surprise, Frank hugged and lifted me up. Twirling me in a circle. "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!!! KITTEN!!! YOU'RE OUR CHIEF!!!" He laughed happily.

"Frank, put her down. Show respect." Max intervined.

He pouted, but let me go.

I smiled at him. "Thank you Frank."

Max told Frank he needed a word with me, so he said his goodbyes and left.

I looked at him. "So you're now my right hand."

Suddenly, he stepped closer to me. Enough for me to be able to see his dark brown eyes clearly through his glasses.

"That's correct. But my words have no power, unlike yours."

I nodded and then looked at him with a troubled expression.

"I'm kind of...confused..."

"On?..."

"Sir L- I mean, Seth said that I hadn't lost a fight..."

"You haven't."

I crossed my arms over my chest. "But, didn't I in my first battle-"

"No." He quickly corrected. "Let me inform you completely now. Earth is the only section able to confront a battle with a team, since we're the weakest." He shrugged. "Which doesn't happen often because it's still certain to fail and for Earth to lose. The loser is classified as the one that got the worst injury."

"Why one loser?"

"Same as why just one winner. IF the team by some luck wins, victory goes to the one that made the most fatal blow to the opponent. Balance is key. When the team loses it's mostly because one messed up. When it wins, it's thanks to one. Comparing Frank's eye injury and your ankle one, Frank lost."

I nodded uncertain.

Gosh, so many rules...

Max sighed and took off his glasses. He began cleaning them with a handkerchief he had on his other hand. "You have authority now. Don't be afraid to show it. Or else, everyone will just step on you. Show strength, dominance and, over all, confidence in EVERYTHING you do. How you walk, how you look, the way you direct yourself towards others. Don't be afraid. Don't hold back. Treat everyone as if their your-"

"Children." I interrupted.

He looked at me without his glasses for the very first time.

"Did you choose a name and symbol already?"

I shook my head.

He adjusted and put back on his glasses. "Well, do you have something in mind?"

"I want something...for it to have a meaning for me..."

Max placed both his hands on his doctor lab coat's pockets. "Earth...not many things have meaning...

As I placed a hand under my chin, a sudden thought-no...a memory flooded back to me. Causing me to light up in joy.

Max raised an eyebrow at me, amused. "Thought of something?"

"Someone once compared me to..."

*****

I look at myself once again in the mirror.

But now, I hold a smile.

I'm wearing a newly entire brown leather uniform, with a black trenchcoat on.

I have changed...And I will cause change.

From this moment on.

Today, Monday, start of the week.

Start of a new me.

I took a deep breath.

I am,

Madame Rock.

Here I go.
