26. A New Era

The lights in the All Valley Arena were blazing, illuminating the red and blue mats where everyone's hard work and training would finally be put to the test. The crowd roared with excitement, waving banners, calling names, and holding onto the energy crackling in the air. The All-Valley was what each dojo was working towards and the stakes were higher than ever. Everything that Cobra Kai, Miyagi-Do, and Eagle Fang had poured into training would either rise or fall today.

Miguel stood at the edge of the mat, shaking out his hands, feeling the nerves roll through him like waves. He had a lot on his mind recently and it often affected his performance.

"Come on, Miguel," Johnny had urged, clapping him on the shoulder, "you've got this. Show them who you are."

But what did that mean, exactly? Who was he fighting for?

The referee's whistle echoed across the mat, snapping Miguel out of his thoughts. Hawk was already waiting, ready to clash in his Miyagi-Do Gi. Miguel took a deep breath, clenched his fists, and lowered into his stance. He could hear Johnny, Carmen, and everyone else shouting his name.

But then, as he went for a spinning kick, something snapped - pain lanced up his spine, from the old injury he'd tried to ignore. The mat tilted, his vision blurring as he fell to the ground letting out a scream.

"Miguel, are you okay?" Johnny asked, rushing towards him.

They ushered him to the medical room where Johnny, his mother and his grandmother joined him. His mother and grandmother shortly left and it was just himself and Johnny.

Miguel could feel the weight of expectation, he knew Johnny wanted him to continue but Miguel wasn't sure if he had the strength to do so. As Johnny left, Miguel sunk back deep into his thoughts.

He never returned to the mat.

As he left the medical room, Miguel saw Sam filling up her water bottle.

"I heard you made it to the finals, congrats." he said to her.

Their relationship was complex, they were very on and off. Miguel would be lying if he said he didn't have any feelings for her but he knew she was still torn about Kai. He just wished she could make her mind up once and for all.

"What happened, are you ok?" she asked, concern evident in her voice.

"I'm fine...it just felt like I wasn't fighting for me anymore."

"I get that, I feel pressure from my dad all the time." Sam sympathised.

Miguel paused. "Yeah...except that Johnny isn't my dad."

There was a pause before he continued.

"Anyways, I just wanted to wish you good luck...and let you know-"

"Can all finalists please report to the mat."

The PA announcement caught Miguel off guard, he couldn't finish what he wanted to say.

"I gotta go, but see you out there rooting for me?" Sam smiled.

"I'm always rooting for you Sam."

The two shared a look before they couldn't help but lean in and kiss. Miguel felt all the feelings he tried to lock away resurface and Sam...well she was feeling a lot.

"Time to show LaRusso and your father that you don't need them," Silver whispered into Robby's ear, "that you don't need them."

Hawk and Robby both stood in their stances, sizing each other up. Hawk's confidence radiated from him but there was something different about Robby. Something dark, something that Silver and Kreese had ignited within him.

"Face each other. Bow."

The whistle blew, and they lunged at each other, each move quick and calculated. Robby's style was aggressive, while Hawk's was more defensive. Their strikes collided with loud, echoing slaps, and as the match continued, the tension between them intensified.

At one point, Robby managed to land a solid hit. Point Keene.

"He knows all my moves," Hawk said to Daniel, "he trained at Miyagi-Do much longer than me."

There was a pause. Daniel looked uncertain before he replied.

"And you were in Cobra Kai longer than him. Put him on defence."

Hawk returned, ready to take on Robby. He was more offensive this time and Robby couldn't deal with it. Hawk secured the next point and it was one all.

It was intense, they were evenly matched as their Senseis watched on. As the fight went on, Robby's Gi became looser and the time ran out. They reached their time limit while it was still one all.

Meaning it would be decided by sudden death overtime.

The crowd roared as the two looked out. They made their way to their Senseis where Silver berated Robby.

"You're showing him respect, it should be over by now."

"Use your anger." Kreese told him.

Robby tore his Gi off and threw it to the side, leaving Hawk speechless. He did the same, spreading out his tattoo on his back. It was time to unleash the hawk.

The point was intense, they each gave their all but Robby momentarily lost his concentration which allowed Hawk to recover. With a final kick to his chest, Hawk emerged triumphant.

With a final point scored, the match was over, and Hawk stood victorious.

The crowd roared, and as Robby picked himself up, he could feel the defeat on his shoulders. He rushed off the mat and stormed off, not able to face the words from Silver or Kreese. He wasn't sure who he was anymore, and the fight had left him conflicted with the person he had become.

Meanwhile, Tory Nichols was ready. She was ready to prove her worth. Her eyes were fierce as they locked onto her opponent, Sam LaRusso who also looked ready.

Tory could feel the gaze of Terry Silver on her from the back of the crowd, Kreese's, too, though they were worlds apart in what they wanted her to do. She could practically hear Silver's smooth, dangerous tone from earlier: "Make them see what Cobra Kai is capable of. Show them what you're made of."

The referee signalled for the fight to begin, and Tory let her instincts take over, charging forward with all her focus on Sam, blocking each attack, twisting away from each kick. The first point went to Sam who was channelling the offensive karate she had been taught by Johnny.

"She's not using Miyagi-Do." Tory complained to Terry. "She's fighting more aggressive."

"Then you get more aggressive. I've seen what's inside of you. Let it out!"

She followed Silver's advice and the second point went to Tory. She was fuelled by the adrenaline now, using her anger and channelling it into her karate.

Two-one Nichols.

"Damn it!" Sam cursed, running over to Johnny and Daniel.

"I'm attacking but it's not working! What style should I use?" she asked.

Daniel and Johnny exchanged looks before Daniel replied. "Yours, trust your insticts. Use everything you've learnt from me and Sensei Lawrence. All of it."

Inspired from the advice, she returned to the mat. Before the point started she tried to distract Tory, with a mixture of offense and defence Sam thought she had a clear point.

"No point! Out of bounds!"

"No way! She went out after!" Johnny yelled.

Sam came back stronger and with a punch gained a point.

Silver seethed from the side. It was two-two and the next point would determine the winner.

In the next round, Tory delivered a nasty elbow to Sam's face.

"Warning. Elbow to face!"

"Warning? That should be a point deduction!"

"I didn't mean to!" Tory protested.

The two went off to their respective sides. "She comes at you again, you give it again to her other eye. She can't see, she can't fight." Silver instructed,

"Won't I get disqualified?"

"Why she ran into your elbow?" he responded. "Worst you'll get is another warning, trust me."

"It was an accident, I don't need to cheat to win."

"Since when did you disobey an order?" Terry's voice was firm.

Kreese stepped in. "Let her do what she wants. This is your fight now. So whatever happens, it's up to you."

Sam and Tory faced off again, and with a low kick to her abdomen, Tory sent Sam stumbling back.

"Point! Winner!"

She immediately rushed forward to Sam. "Hey are you alright?"

Sam could do nothing but back away in fear as Tory was dragged away by the rest of the Cobra Kai team who were cheering triumphantly. It was a win for Tory, but at what cost?

This meant that Cobra Kai had won. This was the beginning of their domination. Terry Silver had big plans for this new era of Cobra Kai.

However, Tory's victory was short lived when later that evening she saw Terry Silver handing a stack of cash to the referee.

He was bribed.

Tory didn't win properly.

She cheated.

And that's all she could think about as she stormed off.

Johnny Lawrence walked into the Cobra Kai dojo, but it was empty. He heard the door open behind him and saw Robby.

"What happened here?" he asked his son.

"We're moving to a new location...multiple locations I think."

"You kicked ass today," Johnny told his son, "could've gone either way."

He noticed the silence from Robby."

"Hey," he said, walking closer, "it's just a match. Don't let it eat you up."

"It's not that," Robby replied, "it's this kid. Kenny. I thought I could take him under my wing, be the mentor I wish I had when I was younger."

Pause.

"But when I saw him today, it was like looking in a mirror. I realised I screwed everything up. I had all this hate within me, for you and Miguel. And I thought I could use Cobra Kai to control that but it just made things worse and now it's never going to get better."

"That's not true." Johnny replied quietly. "You had a good thing with LaRusso. You had a good thing going and I got in the way of that, don't blame yourself. Blame me."

"I'm sick of blaming you dad." Robby said before breaking down into tears, Johnny wrapping his arms to embrace his son.

"It's going to be alright."

Meanwhile, at Terry's house, Kreese was swirling a glass of champagne in his hand, staring out at the nightscape as Terry Silver's voice droned on behind him.

"I'm surprised you backed off on Nichols in the final. It's unlike you."

"I had a moment of sympathy." Kreese replied.

Silver chuckled. "That's a first."

"Do you remember when you asked me what I thought your weakness was?" he continued.

Kreese looked at him without uttering a single word.

"It's Johnny Lawrence." Silver spat. "That was what this was all about wasn't it? It wasn't about bringing us back together or the glory days. That was all bullshit."

"That's not true."

"Yes it is. And I fell for it. Do you know why?" Silver asked. "Because everyone has a weakness John...and mine is you."

"You think I am your weakness?" Kreese said meanicingly. "Well you've got it backwards because I am your strength. I have been your strength ever since Vietnam."

"Yes! There it is!" Silver cheered. "I can always expect you to play the guilt card. How many times do you expect me to repay that debt before we're square?"

Just then, sirens blared in the background as the edged closer towards the property the two were on.

"What did you do?" Kreese asked, dumbfounded.

"I'm shedding my weakness...captain."

"John Kreese you are under arrest for aggravated assault and attempted murder. You have the right to remain silent."

And as the officers threw John Kreese into the back of the police car, Terry Silver watched gleefully. It was time for his moment now. Cobra Kai was now his.

And he had big plans for the dojo.

They were entering a new era.

Terry Silver's era.
