14. Aftermath
Miraculously, Kai didn't pass out, he just felt extremely groggy. He recollected himself and spat out the disgusting taste of blood in his mouth, the product of Tory's spikes.
He got himself back up and saw Hawk, glaring at him.
"You haven't had enough?" Kai shouted at him. "After what Demetri did to you?"
Not even replying, Hawk grunted and sprinted towards Kai, trying to land a flying kick. Kai grabbed his foot and sent him crashing on the ground.
As Hawk tried to fight back, Kai blocked everything and out of pure anger, he sent two punches towards Hawk's face.
"That's for the All Valley," he said after a punch, before punching again, "that's for wrecking the Miyagi-Do Dojo," and after sending a final punch towards Hawk's face Kai said angrily, "and that's for just being a complete asshole!"
Once he was done, Hawk's face was a bloody mess. Hawk was still conscious and made a movement to try and grab Kai's throat. With his strength, Kai lifted Hawk up by the collar of the shirt and looked at the boy. His nose was bleeding and around his right eye, a black eye seemed to be already developing.
Holding Hawk and staring menacingly right into his eyes, he could hear the gasps of students and he could see out the corner of his eyes the phones filming this.
"Hawk here," Kai shouted to the crowd, still holding a weak Hawk, "is a prime example of an insecure, bullying asshole."
Kai was usually a very calm and collected person, but after everything Hawk had done, the anger he had against the Cobra Kai student was immense.
"And what do you do with people like him?" Kai asked the crowd. "You give them a taste of their own medicine!"
With that, Kai dropped Hawk and pushed him towards the wall before performing a complex butterfly kick, striking Hawk right in the face, sending the boy crumpling to the floor, unconscious.
There were some cheers and some disapproving murmurs coming from the crowd after Kai had finished with Hawk. Kai ignored them all and looked directly at where Sam and Tory were. He heard Sam scream in pain as Tory's spikes sliced across her arm.
"SAM!" Kai yelled, trying to run over to her but couldn't as he was tripped over by Miguel. Kai looked up and saw Miguel and Robby fighting intensely.
Robby punched Miguel hard in the stomach. "That's for taking advantage of Sam! You knew she wasn't still over Kai!"
"I didn't!" Miguel roared.
"THEN WHY DID YOU KISS HER!" Robby shouted before they started fighting again.
Kai was still slumped on the floor, exhaustion consuming him. His eyes flickered up to the two boys. He slowly scrambled up to his feet, joining Robby to help fight against Miguel.
"She doesn't love you!" Miguel told Kai. "She loves me!"
Another wave of anger coursed through Kai and he sent many punches towards Miguel's torso before kicking him, sending him on his knees. However, the exhaustion that Kai felt was a big disadvantage for him and it wasn't working in his favour. Miguel was able to fight back and after sending excruciating punches towards Kai, Miguel grabbed Kai's arm and pinned him against the ground.
"I wasn't taught the difference between mercy and honour," a voice in Miguel's head sounding like his Sensei told him, "and I paid the price for it. If I'm extra hard on you, it's only because you have the potential to be better than I ever was."
Seeing the pain in Kai's face and all the wounds he had sustained made Miguel rethink his decision to further hurt the boy. The crowd was egging him on but he refused. He released his grip on Kai and let the boy go.
"I'm sorry." Miguel said quietly.
Kai wasn't going to strike anymore, he was going to leave it. The fight was over.
But it wasn't for Robby. The anger Robby had against Miguel, against Cobra Kai all was channeled through him charging towards Miguel and sending a kick right in Miguel's stomach.
"ROBBY NO!" Kai yelled, seeing the Diaz boy stumble backwards and lose his balance. He kept on stumbling until the reached the railing of the stairs and the force of Robby's kick sent Miguel toppling over the railing.
"MIGUEL!" Tory yelled, watching the boy fall from the second floor.
Miguel let out a scream as he felt back before he landed on the bannister of the stair with a painful crack. The students all gasp as Miguel fell, unconscious.
Robby realised what he had done out of anger and peered over the stairs.
"What have you done?" Kai screamed at Robby, sending a kick towards him. "Fucking control yourself!"
This was the first time Kai had ever sworn, he never usually liked to cuss but in this instance, he was mad at Robby. Miguel had shown Kai mercy but Robby felt the need to interject and channel his anger. Kai knew sometimes his anger got the best of him, but he would always control it before anything got out of hand. Robby, however, knew no limits and it resulted in Miguel's severe injury.
There was no need for Robby's kick.
"We need an ambulance at West Valley High." the officer said into his walkie talkie.
Robby was sent stumbling back as Kai kicked him.
"Look what you've fucking done!" Kai roared at Robby, grabbing him by his shirt. "You've fucking almost killed him!"
Robby looked at Kai, petrified. The Hilton boy had never been as angry before. Wiggling free from Kai's grasp, Robby shot one look at Miguel's body before running off. He obviously didn't want to be arrested for his actions, but it was inevitable.
Once Robby had run off, the fatigue in Kai suddenly took over and whilst everyone was too preoccupied over Miguel, Kai fainted. The blood loss and bruises finally beating him.
When Kai woke up he was in a hospital bed with tubes connected to him and plasters and bandages all over him. The boy gasped and choked slightly when trying to breathe, there was a searing pain in his stomach and all over his body. His face felt extremely sore as well, after what Tory's spikes did to him.
"Malachai!" his mother said worriedly, noticing that her son had finally woken up.
"Where's Sam?" Kai demanded.
Rebecca Hilton looked at her son. "She's being treated right now, that Tory girl got her on the arm with some spikes. Disgusting how they let that sort of stuff be worn! It's a weapon!"
"How long do I have to be here for?" Kai asked his mom.
She sighed. "The doctors want to keep you here for a week or so, just to monitor your blood levels. You lost a lot of blood Malachai."
Kai groaned, all he wanted to do was to visit Sam and make sure she was ok. Kai noticed his phone was on the table next to his hospital bed and reached over to try and get it, even though he was still feeling quite sore.
He noticed multiple missed calls and unread messages from Takeshi so Kai decided to Facetime him. Takeshi picked up almost instantly and his eyes were met with Kai's plastered, bandaged face.
"Kai!" he exclaimed. "Your mom told me about the fight! Are you ok?"
Kai nodded and recounted everything that had happened, from Tory slashing his face to his kick on Hawk and finally to Robby's kick that sent Miguel into his coma.
"What was Robby thinking?" Takeshi asked.
Kai sighed. "I don't know, but I lost it with him. Miguel showed mercy but Robby felt it necessary to interfere."
Takeshi listened before telling Kai that Sensei wanted to talk to them. Sensei Yazuko was extremely concerned for one of his best students and wanted to make sure that Kai was ok and made the boy recap the events that had happened again to him.
"I lost my calm Sensei," Kai told him honestly, "I lost control and I didn't show mercy to Hawk. But then I had a go at Robby."
Sensei Yazuko looked at the boy. "What happened with Robby and what happened with you are two completely different things. You didn't serverly hurt him and you were in control of the situation whereas Robby had no control and didn't know what would happen, not to mention that this was after Miguel had shown mercy to you."
Kai nodded and he instantly felt better. He felt hypocritical for yelling at Robby when he himself showed no mercy towards Hawk. It was two completely different situations though, and Kai never intended to severly hurt Hawk, it was mainly to give him a taste of his own medicine.
Once Kai had hung up the call, he focused on the TV that was in his room. It was currently a news report on what had happened.
"I'm here at West Valley High where what can only be described as an all-out karate riot caught students and faculty off guard, sending shock waves through the Valley." the reporter said. The camera switched to a member of the public.
"We got enough to worry about these days," the woman said, "now I gotta worry about karate gangs in school?"
Then the camera showed Moon and a few other students, they had organised a peaceful gathering prayer and song.
"Many students were admitted to hospital for their injuries and one student, Miguel Diaz, suffered the worst injury of them all-"
Kai groaned as he scrambled for the remote to try and turn it off. The TV shut off, silence filling the room. He moved his head back to try and get comfortable in his bed. He felt trapped and restricted, he wanted to leave the bed but the doctors insisted on keeping him here longer just to monitor him.
The next few days were going to be extremely boring.
Six days had passed by and apart from his parents, Kai received no other visitors. That was fine by him, he would have chats with his parents and call Takeshi in his free time, the rest of the time the doctors would be conducting tests on the boy, making sure that Kai was truly ok. It was like this every day. His visitors never changed, it was always his parents. But that was until one afternoon, a familiar face appeared at the doorway.
"Sam," Kai breathed out, "you're here..."
