Chapter eight// Beginning of the End

I could feel my heartbeat in my throat. It thrummed steady, but quick. I gripped my spear and stepped into line beside Lizzie. Our shoulders bumped and I glanced over. She looked excited. I only felt nervous. Cerco stood at my feet, anticipation lifting his fur.

"Now!" Olvan's shout rang out, followed by the ear-piercing bellow of his moose.

No more time to think about nerves. We dove over the ridge and into the fray.

There must've been a million Conqueror soldiers.

Animals and people, spread out as far as the eye could see. We attacked suddenly, startling the great majority of them. But they recovered quickly, unfortunately, grabbing whatever weapon was nearest and joining the fight with fierce battle cries.

The first Conqueror I fought was a short, skinny kid with hair and skin darker than Cerco's fur. He fought ferociously, aided by a snarling badger that the wolverine gladly engaged.

The boy stumbled away, wounded and panting, before long.

But he was replaced by another. And then that one, by another. I barely had time to catch my breath. I lost count, and could feel myself slowing down. It was getting harder and harder to keep up.

The huge woman I was fighting, armed with a battle axe and accompanied by an ox, seemed to notice my concentration slipping. She went in with quick jabs, her blade whooshing through the air.

I barely managed to dodge. Then her foot appeared out of nowhere, sweeping my legs out from under me. I landed with a hard thud on my back, and she was on me in an instant. I covered my face as she continued to attack.

A black-and-tawny blur flashed through my periphery, knocking the woman off me. I leapt to my feet as soon as she was gone, staff in hand and ready to fight whoever had gotten rid of the woman.

But it wasn't a Conqueror. Instead, I saw Sasha battling a young man with a fearsome scowl. He clubbed the man with the flat side of his blade, and he fell to the ground, unconscious.

"Sasha!" I exclaimed. "Thanks."

He offered me a grin, catching his breath. "Seems Tyler was right." The warrior finally stated. "We're outnumbered."

"Just a bit." I agreed. "You seen the others?"

"No, I was separated from them right away."

I frowned. "Well then. Let's stick together, shall me?"

He nodded and we briefly clasped hands.

Then the next wave of Conquerors surged and we were overtaken.

"Back to back!" Sasha instructed, deflecting a swipe with a clang as his sword met another.

I obliged, stepping into place behind him. Our shoulders touched as we fought off enemy after enemy. I could feel his laboured breaths and grunts of determination as they paralleled my own.

"Call Cerco!" Sasha shouted suddenly, making me realize I hadn't seen the wolverine in a little while.

"Where's Delar?" I responded, kicking my opponent in the knee to force them down. I then whistled loudly, two sharp notes ringing out yet barely heard over the cacophony of the battle.

Sasha huffed. "He's nearby. I can see him, at least."

"Okay, good." I panted back. My arms ached as I raised my spear yet again.

But my next opponent was bowled over by the wolverine as he leapt to my side.

"Cerco!" I cried out happily, choosing to ignore the red stains on the fur around his mouth and claws. "There you are."

The wolverine growled in agreement. His eyes were bright with the excitement of the battle.

"He's here, he's okay." I tossed over my shoulder to Sasha, feeling invigorated as the next enemy loomed.

He answered with nothing more than a growl, but we didn't need anything else.

Cerco and I launched ourselves back into the battle, our movements matching without either of us having to think about it.

As the second wave died down and I knocked out my last opponent, I realized Sasha wasn't behind me anymore. I spun, trusting Cerco to cover my back, and looked around for him.

He was on the ground, a few paces away, pinned by a massive bengal tiger. His sword lay just out of his reach.

I rushed over and sent the blade sliding toward Sasha as I did so. "Get off him!"

The tiger looked up, giving the Zhongese boy the chance to grab his sword and slash its leg.

The feline yowled and backed off, bounding away.

Sasha flopped back on the ground. "Thanks for the save."

"Thought I'd return the favour." I answered, offering a hand. "C'mon, this isn't over yet."

He clasped my arm and hauled himself upright. Delar appeared beside him. The jaguar had a gash along his flank and a nick out of his ear, but other than that, looked none the worse for wear. Sasha parred his head and rolled out his shoulders.

I bounced on the balls of my feet.

Sasha fell in behind me again.

The next wave of attackers arrived. They were angry, and we were exhausted. For a moment, fear flashed through my mind. Then adrenaline surged and it was gone again. I met Cerco's gaze and nodded determinedly. We'd fight, until we couldn't fight anymore.

The wolverine let out a snark that boosted my confidence and launched himself onto the approaching animal. I gripped my spear. I couldn't hesitate now.
