CHAPTER 1

01

Her gloved hands remained still on the cold, metallic counter. The small ticking of the hospital's hung clock was the only thing keeping her sane. If there was one thing she could recall about the case, it was that they claimed it was an animal. That it couldn't have been anything other than an animal. She had officially moved into the neighborhood of Forks yesterday after 'identifying' a well-known person throughout the community. She had clocked in this morning after drinking two cups of hot coffee; if she had woken up earlier, maybe breakfast would have been in the cards as well. But she did not wake up early and rushed to the hospital immediately after changing into jeans and a blouse; her brown leather boots kept her from slipping outside her doorstep on the ice. How people managed to maneuver themselves gracefully in this weather would forever perplex Alexandra.

Despite the claims of the attack being a man vs nature ordeal, the body itself said otherwise. All around Alexandra were whispers of it being something else - something that wasn't human. The dead spoke of a trio compelling mayhem, but she refused to listen to the dead surrounding the small town of Forks. If word got around that she could attend them, then she wouldn't hear the end of it. She'd chosen to remain quiet, deliberately, a few years before arranging to leave home. A small buzz drew her out of her thoughts; it was faint. Conscious. As if someone was trying to warn her about something.

"Miss Beaumont." A smooth voice spoke up, cutting through the warning spell she was entrapped in. She turned around to see Dr. Cullen approaching, clipboard tucked under one arm, his porcelain skin was bright under the fluorescent lights within the room. There were little things she began to notice about the doctor in front of her, the way he meticulously blinked - as if each movement was carefully thought of. The way his family all had similar features, from the eye color to the skin tone. They weren't the typical family, but who was she to judge?

"How can I help you, Dr Cullen?" Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the way his hands were slightly still upon passing the corpse. He might have known something, but it was not in the way an accomplice would. It was something far deeper - as if this tragic death was a warning to him just as well. Perhaps there was a small inkling that kept bothering him just as much as it bothered her.

"I was told by the Police department to bring you the deceased's medical records for your report." With that said, he held out the clipboard with the file attached to it. Stepping an inch closer, the faint buzz grew louder. It was an all too familiar sound - one she had grown accustomed to in the past. It was a warning to the listener - a warning of danger. It was most associated with the cold ones. Something in her snapped; the lights flickered within the room. Her eyes sharpened in on his hands, which were clenched as if he were trying to hold something back. She had to give him credit because he was effortlessly holding himself back - though with his field of work, she could only assume it was easier than dealing with blood.

She could kill him now and say that he had left after dropping off the necessary paperwork - that he seemed off. That he spoke of returning home, with the icy roads, it was plausible that he could have slipped off the road. She could make it seem like an accident. But it would raise suspicion - after all, she was new to the town. Pushing aside her thoughts, Alexandra provided a small smile.

"Thank you, Dr.Cullen." His eyes flickered with something unfamiliar, something foreign to her - relief. She understood to an extent - his family would be safe and they'd continue existing in each other's presence. Each knowing the other was different, but allowing the other to remain in their own world without the worry of being outed.

"You're welcome." With that said, he returned the smile and walked out the door, leaving her alone in the cold room. And with silence, Alexandra was able to hear her own thoughts.

-

She was not going to get involved - that was a rule she made and it's allowed her to live this long. Vampires were much more trickier to deal with than most since their egos allowed them to believe they were far more superior than most. Word on a street was that there was a Coven that was compiled of one of the more talented Vampires - that they enforced 'laws'. If anyone were to step out of line they'd be dealt with, meaning that they were killed. There would be no true trial not unless they were worthy to keep around.

Alexandra made it this far without stepping on their toes, without forming any true connect. She was alone but that was a flaw she was willing to deal with. After all, she'd rather be alive than dead. The cards she chose was something her family should have chosen, instead they went the more heroic route which got them killed. It got everyone she knew killed.

Many would dread the presence of witches, it was as if they were infection - as if they symbolized death itself. If an individual were to welcome its presence than death may just happen to stop by long before one was ready to perish. So concealing any notion of what she was is the only memorandum Alexandra received from the lesson made of her family's collapse. The fear was suppressed by a show of bravado - the mental wounds that were acquired from standing front row of what occurred that dreadful night was pushed far back. She would bury herself in work, as if it would serve as anaesthesia to lessen the sting. To diminish the pain.

"Alexandra!" The brunette turned around to face the speaker. It was the same nurse who had informed her of everything occurring within Forks, she was bright and young. Perhaps 30 to 35 if she were to guess her age. Long locks of dark hair was pulled back into a fancy updo, the bright green scrubs weren't the easiest on the eyes but it did make her hazel blue eyes stand out.

"Oh - hello there." Was the only response she could offer to her. Alexandra could not, for the life of her, recall her name.

"I heard Dr.Cullen himself came down to drop off the paperwork earlier today - is that true?!" Word sure spread fast and she wasn't sure if that was a good thing. Standing up from where she was sat, the dry sandwich from the vending machine soon forgotten, Alexandra only gestured to the file sprawled out on the edge.

"Yes, but that was it."

"That was it?! He never steps down here, not because the bodies or anything - but for other purposes. He insisted he'd bring them down himself, I was originally going to go." This piqued her interest, had he been suspicious of her as well. If so, she wondered how.

"Maybe he just wanted to see if I'd be good company, after all - aren't I his wife's age? Maybe he was hoping we'd befriend each other?" It was a false suggestion, she knew exactly why he came down to the basement of the Hospital. Though that wasn't something she could just share on the whim.

"I highly doubt he came down to test you, after all, you're both two peas in a pod. He is an extraordinary surgeon and for him to come down here - in our little hospital is a miracle. Then there's you, the highly acclaimed Medical examiner from Seattle. Both of you could do so much more than just stay here - even Billy said so." Alexandra only offered a smile, she wondered if most people within this town were this forthcoming. The only person who seemed distant was the Cheif which was more questionable considering he would be seen as the face of the town due to his job title.

"Who's Billy?" The question seemed to awaken the younger girl even more.

"He's a man from where I live -  I live on the reservation and work here part time to gain some experience for my college degree." Oh, so she was more younger than she had assumed.

"May I ask how old you are?"

"I'm only 25, Em - Oh, she's my older sister by the way! Well she says I look far more older than my age which is an awful thing to say. I mean I'm not even 36 yet." Okay that stung just a bit.

"I'm 36." Was all she could muster leaving the 25 year old to offer an apologetic smile.

"No offense."

"I thought you were 36 if I am being completely honest." The blatant horror on her face made Alexandra chuckle slightly, but she cleared her throat. "Oh, no offense of course." The laugh both women released echoed throughout the room.

I updated! Huge shout out to my sister for motivating me.

Honestly I had to add a character to just intertwine Alexandra's personal life to Charlie's and what better way than introducing her to Billy aka Charlie's twin.

Please comment your thoughts - I love any feedback. Also I added that small moment with 'Dr. Cullen' because I feel like both of them are far too smart and perceptive to just not know what the other is. Though in her defense he doesn't know that she's a witch...yet.
