30: Cracked Ceiling

Log Date 1569: Another one gone. I should've.. thought this through. I should've done something. I should've not have gotten attached. There's nothing else for them. I..
Forget it. It's not worth noting down. I'll note something important down about this later.
I've got medication to take.

Test Tube's P.O.V:

I'm honestly not sure who was the first one to scream. But there was screaming, lots of it. Of course.. I'm used to that. But it took me a second to realize why. It was almost like time had slowed down and nothing was happening at all. That's when I saw them.

Paintbrush, dangling from my hold. But only by the top half. The rest of them had snapped in half and was on the floor, bleeding like the rest of them. I thought for sure they'd scream, or at least die while at my grasp.. but they didn't. They just stared with wide eyes as they shook and bled out.

"...Wh..wha.. How... Wh..why..."

That's when I remembered.
Shock takes at least five to ten minutes to kill someone, and blood loss takes about seven. They wouldn't die instantly, nothing had affected their head and their heart was definitely still beating. I finally zoned back in to hear the terrified screams of Fan and Lightbulb continuously thrashing against the floor to try to stop me, try to escape.

"HOW COULD YOU?! 'NEVER MURDER SOMEONE BY MY OWN HAND' YOU SAID! WELL LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!"

She screeched. All of the screaming was overwhelming, so I dropped Paintbrush and stumbled back. The hollow noise of their top half hitting and splashing on the ground made me nauseous. Obviously there was nothing we could do but stare. I didn't have time to leave and try to keep them alive. Even if I did, there was no way to fix a break like that without surgery. There just wasn't enough time.

Eventually I heard metal tearing and breaking, making it obvious Lightbulb had finally escaped. She ran to Paintbrush with a pained expression that curses my thoughts.
It always will.
"Painty! Oh my god.. oh my god what did she do to you.."
"...I..."

Their shaking worsened as they started hacking and coughing up blood. There was internal damage by them hitting the floor with no flesh or muscle to protect their entrails. Wood splinters stabbing and sticking out of them also most likely wouldn't help. I just silently watched Lightbulb's expression, seeing if she could tell there was nothing that either of us could do to save them. She seemed panicked, just holding them and not caring about how much blood she got on herself. They continued to cough until I was sure they'd pass out. But once again, they seemed to refuse to die. They were determined to live, to fight death until they truly lost. It was obvious by how their breathing continued to rapidly rise then slow in a flux they were fighting their demise, and seeing Lightbulb's eyes darken she realized just that.. There was nothing any of us could do to save them.

A quiet wail from behind us let me know Fan had realized that too.

Lightbulbs P.O.V:

...I couldn't save them.

She couldn't save them, Fan couldn't save them, nothing here could save them. I saw Painty fighting it. Fighting so hard to not let... her win.
But they had to. I couldn't just.. let them suffer like that. I couldn't kill them.. I couldn't kill someone else.. but I could try to talk them down and out of it. They couldn't run forever. Especially not as their blood leaks out onto the cold floor and the infections slowly start to creep in

"...Painty.. please.."
I held their hand and tried to reason with them.
"...I... I... I... won't..."
"...You have to..."
"...Won't.."
"Do you not understand..? You have to... there's nothing left for you here.. you're toast and you know it..."

They started to answer me, but started coughing violently again. I felt the urge to vomit as I watched their bloody intestines clench up as they coughed, seemingly gathering blood from there to cough into their hand and all over their arm. It's not the blood that bothers me anymore.. I've seen enough of it to where it doesn't bother me. It's the fact I can see inside them. See the things that aren't supposed to be visible.

Then they smiled lightly, their eyes shining as they weakly looked up at me. The chuckle they gave me was bone chilling, both because of how weak they were and because of how familiar it was.

"You.. never change... do you?"
I squeezed their hand tighter to fight my urge to cry.
"...Let go. You're not suffering here like I did."
"I wouldn't exactly say suffer-"
"...More of learn how to t-tackle new.. experiences.."

I heard a quiet tone speak from behind me, so I snapped around and stared at her. She slowly got quieter noticing that I not only was looking at her, but was holding a death glare.
"..Why are you even still here? You want to watch them suffer and struggle like you've been doing for the past.. god knows how long!" I snapped, squeezing Painty harder, wishing the guts in front of me were her's.
"Year and a half."
"...you're disgusting. Leave. You have a viewing window.. I-I'll scream when they're done."

For once, Test Tube looked conflicted. Her gaze flickered from me to Painty, then to Fan who was balled up terrified in the corner. I couldn't blame the kid, I want to do the same thing. But I couldn't. She sighed, then went to the back of the room. Obviously she wanted to stick around to see Paintbrush die, or get closer to them, but I wasn't about to let her. She's not allowed to suddenly have remorse and sympathy now.

Paintbrush went into another bloody coughing fit, and started violently shaking while wheezing. I flinched feeling them grip onto me, the color draining from my expression. Fan wailed quietly again behind me, and we all knew. They couldn't fight blood loss like that anymore. They were good as dead, we all knew that. There was a heavy sigh from Test Tube behind me, which made me want to punch her. She'd shatter, and all of this would be over.

But no. She deserves to suffer, she was the only one there who did, and from experience I know that watching someone you care about suffer is one of the most brutal punishments ever. Besides.. that wouldn't undo anything. When I looked down back at Painty, they were slumped with dull eyes. Almost.. almost...

"...Letting go..?"
"...N-n.."
"...Please.. rest.."
They sighed shakily, relaxing and closing their eyes.
"...We're here.. goodnight.. Painty.."

And just like that
It was over.
They were dead. Leaving only the rotten awful scent of exposed entrails, blood, and oak wood. I wanted to set the place on fire, like they would have wanted to do. I turned to Test Tube, shakily speaking.

"...I-it's done.. you can go..."
"...I still have to clean up the body.. that scent-"
"..Leave them. Do it later. I don't care.. just.. leave already."

She groaned quietly, but went. Leaving us in this new.. grey room. Then I felt tears prick my eyes. They didn't get to die in the white room. For once, for once, for once, for once. They didn't die in the white room. They got the cracked patterns of the cement ceiling to stare at as they died. No cursed white padding. They were free. By both death, and that they were out of the room. Somehow, that's what made me start crying. Not death, not the blood, not the fact I knew I was going to die down here alone.
A cracked cement ceiling.
I heard Fan sniffling and quietly creeping towards me, so I sat down with a slump and let him.

"...n-now what.. are we.. supposed t-to do..?"
"...we get the hell out of here."
"...but-"
"I know what you're thinking.. and you're probably right. But I'm not giving up this time..."

And with that, we sat there and cried. Together

All three of us.

Fan's P.O.V

It was too disturbing.
I couldn't remember shaking more in my life.
It was worse than Apple's death.
For me, it's nothing but a bloody haze. But either way, I can remember the moment vividly. I still remember how the floor seemed to intensify after the snap. Gravity intensified. Then all I could see was.. them. In half.
I couldn't look, but I couldn't look away. It was hard to believe that Paintbrush of everyone would just... go.

Then there was yelling, the same yelling. The yelling from when Lightbulb had lost it. She sat down with Paintbrush and then it was all a blur. A blur of blood and tears.
Then it was harder to believe. It was hard to believe that Paintbrush was fighting to stay alive, but it also made perfect sense.

"Paintbrush come on! For us!" I pleaded, my heart beating in my ears, "W-We need you so much, you're stronger than everyone a-and.."

"..and I needed you.." I whispered. My hand squeezed Paintbrush's side, sending them into another coughing fit. I quickly removed it, then looked at Test tube.

"..let go.."
"..n-n.."

That's all I can remember from Paintbrush. Everything apart from their final breath. A shaking, brutal breath that still keeps me up at night to this day. I just stared at them in disbelief. Telling myself over and over again, this isn't happening.

"...I-it's done.. you can go..."
"...I still have to clean up the body.. that scent-"
"..Leave them. Do it later. I don't care.. just.. leave already."

I looked up. Lightbulb's eyes were dull with grief. She hardly looked at Test tube, only acknowledging her with a vague glance over her shoulder. Test tube, however, was fully in shock. I could tell that by the way she was standing this was not what she wanted. Her body was shaking beyond belief. Everything about those 13 minutes felt like an hour.

A haunted hour.
Then Test tube left, and it was just me, Lightbulb and the corpse of our best friend. Our hero. I crawled over to Lightbulb, needing her. I don't care what she thought about Paintbrush, I don't care about what they said to me,
We needed them.

"...N-now what.. are we.. supposed t-to do..?"
I fell onto her softly, eyes half closed.
"...We get the hell out of here."
I looked at her, surprised. Her recent low energy was replaced with a kind of menacing glint. Her eyes conjured up plans beyond escape routes.
"...But-"
"I know what you're thinking.. and you're probably right. But I'm not giving up this time..."
Her first was clenched so tightly I thought she'd tear right through it. I looked at her, then down at Paintbrush again.

"Don't let the bed bugs bite.."
