So Close

Lemme explain something:

Gislaine comes from a world where jealousy isn't a thing and it's confusing af. Cut the guy some slack.

-

When Robert saw cutouts in Morgan's carpet, instead of screaming like he would have the day before, he only smiled and walked out into the kitchen area, where Y/n was pouring coffee in her new outfit.

OR

"Good morning," he greeted. Gislaine, still in his pajamas, looked up, then back at the paper he had grabbed. Y/n was putting together Robert's breakfast, who noticed she was not smiling like usual.

"Good morning, Daddy," Morgan answered.

"Made breakfast?" he tried to converse with Y/n.

"Yes."

"Great."

She put the pot down to get the door when the bell rung, Robert getting up from his seat. "I'll get it."

"Thank you."

"That's a nice outfit," he added.

"Thank you."

She picked up the coffee pot again, looking at her own reflection in it, then at Gislaine, who was reading the comic section - it was the only thing he understood.

"It is I! Prince Edward of Andalasia, come to rescue the fair Princess Y/n!"

At the voice, Robert stopped, the door opening by a man in a puffy red suit. Y/n came out, hands limp at her sides. "Y/n!" he cried and ran, picking her up and spinning her around.

"Could you...?" Robert cut in, nearly getting kicked by Y/n's twirling feet. "I'm sorry. But could you just be...could you just be careful?"

"You!"

"What?"

He drew his sword, pushing Y/n behind her. Gislaine had come out at this point, stunned by the sword being pointed at Robert, who was holding Morgan behind him. "You're the one who's been holding my dear sister captive!"

"Let's stay calm," he tried to reason, holding up his hands.

"Any last words before I dispatch you?"

"You have got to be kidding," he sighed.

Edward stopped to ponder. "Strange words."

He went to slash him until Y/n jumped in the way. "No! Wait, these - these are my friends!"

"Oh," he shrugged, putting the sword back.

"This is Robert and Morgan. And this is Edward...my step-brother."

He saw Gislaine behind him and put his arm around him, shaking him as he forced him to step forward. "And I know this young man. Your true love. Come and you shall be wed at once!"

A strained silence followed, Y/n and Gislaine staring at each other in what looked like apathy. Seeing this, Robert pulled Y/n back. "Um, you're okay with this? Your sister marrying a guy she barely knows?"

" 'Tis true love, peasant Robert!"

"Actually," Y/n cut, biting her lip while looking around at the men. "I've been...thinking."

Confused, he repeated, "Thinking?"

"Yes and...Gislaine and I must do something before we leave."

Gislaine looked up, surprised. "What?"

"I think...we should...go on a date."

"A date!" Edward exclaimed. "What's a date?"

"Well..." Robert nodded, prompting her to go on. "We'll go out to dinner. And we talk about ourselves. Our likes and our dislikes. Our interests. But...just us. A date."

-

Outside the apartment, while Edward was checking his teeth in his sword, Y/n said to Robert, "As queen, I'll make you honorary citizens at my coronation."

"Cool, cool. And if you ever come to town, we should all get together for dinner."

"That would be lovely..."

"Ahem!" Gislaine coughed, getting her attention.

"Oh...right."

"We'll see each other soon," Robert said, partly to convince himself, not wanting to let her go. "It's not like we're talking about, you know, forever."

"And ever..."

"So, uh...good luck on your date."

"Yeah...thanks...and you with Nancy." She turned to Morgan, who was in the process of fighting back tears. "And Morgan...I hope I'll see you again soon..." She bent over and hugged her, Morgan's arms around her neck.

Edward put away his sword, pulling Y/n closer to him. "Thank you for taking care of my sister and her groom, peasants." He left with his hand in hers, Gislaine lagging behind.

"I'm gonna really miss them," Morgan said, grabbing onto his hand.

"Me too, sweetheart...me too..."

-

Y/n and Gislaine walked in silence along the city's streets. Edward was waiting for them by the sewer, giving them time alone.

"How's your hotdog?" the princess finally asked.

"It's...a hotdog. Listen, I...don't want to go back with things awkward. I mean, we're supposed to be married and..."

"Right..." She looked out at the lake, half wanting to jump in and forget any of her worries and just...swim. "Well, you know, we could go to that ball Robert was talking about," she suggested. "Maybe there things will be different. Cinderella found love there, so maybe it'll work for us."

Gislaine cracked a smile, then threw the rest of the hotdog behind him and put his arms around Y/n's waist while a rat and pigeon fought over the remains. "Oh, darling! Yes! And then..." He took her hands, pulling them close to his chest. "I'd like to kiss you."

-

Morgan sighed at her mirror, a tiara on her head and holding a wand. She looked into the mirror sadly, then saw Y/n's reflection. Gasping, she ran at her, hugging her tightly. "Y/n! You're back, you're back!"

"Morgan!" She held out her arms, grabbing Morgan into a hug and spinning her around. "I need your help, honey. I asked Gislaine to the ball, but I'm not sure what to wear or what to bring...and I'm so desperate to save our love! So just this once, can I ask you..." She crouched to her eye-level. "Will you be my fairy godmother?"

Morgan giggled. "Yeah and I have something that can help."

-

She took a credit card from a drawer and explained to Y/n, "Daddy says it's only for emergencies. This is definitely an emergency."

-

Morgan took Y/n out where they bought her outfit, shoes, and went to get their hair and nails done. While they were at the salon, Morgan was explaining the rules of dating to Y/n. "And when you go out, you don't wanna wear too much makeup. 'Cause otherwise the boys get the wrong idea. And you know how they are. They're only after one thing."

Y/n blinked, eyes wide. "What's that?"

"I don't know. Nobody will tell me." She paused, then asked, "So is this what it's like?"

"What, sweetie?"

"Going shopping with your mother?"

"Oh..." She looked down, upset for Morgan, but trying not to show it. "Well I don't know, I...I've never been shopping with my mother before."

"Me either..."

Seeing her disappointment, she added, "But soon you'll have a mother to shop with."

"You mean stepmother."

"It's not true what they say. You Knut, my mother is Edward's stepmother. And she's...well, she treats us equally." She smiled, a little strained. Morgan nodded, clearly not buying it.

-

"Mr. N is on the line telling us his sweetie pie is acting distant. You were saying, Mr. N?"

Nathaniel was in a car, talking to a radio host over the phone. "I've always treated her like a queen, but lately I'm starting to feel there's this whole other side to her, like I don't even know her anymore."

"I think you need to take her aside and find out how she really feels about you."

M/n appeared at the window, making Nathaniel jump when he realized her there. "Hello, worthless. Miss me?"

Gislaine's Suit

Gislaine waited anxiously for Y/n to arrive, Edward with him in his red suit. But Gislaine wore a modern purple one with a black undershirt and tie. The song finished just as Y/n came in in the outfit she had bought earlier with Morgan, her hair straightened/curled [if it's too short just put in a bow or something], both looking into each other's eyes. He held out his arm, which she took, and he led her down with Edward following, Robert and Nancy already staring at them.

"I'm surprised," Gislaine said. "You said you couldn't dance."

"I said I didn't. I never said I couldn't," Robert corrected.

To Nancy, Y/n introduced, "This is my brother, Edward. And you've...met Gislaine."

She nodded, looking at Edward a beat too long. "Hello."

"My lady." He took her hand and kissed it, Nancy looking between everyone with a look of pleased surprise.

"I guess chivalry isn't dead then. Your girlfriend is lucky."

"My princess? Oh, I have none," he replied cluelessly.

"Really? Wow. I'm surprised. You...make a good prince."

"Well, thank you."

"Well, folks, it's that time of night. I'd like to ask each gentleman to invite a lady he did not accompany this evening to dance the King and Queen's Waltz."

The music started and Edward held out his hand to Nancy. "May I have the pleasure?"

They went to the dance floor and Y/n looked at Robert and hesitantly reached out. "Shall we?"

He looked at Gislaine and said, "I...had my fill dancing. Besides, your boyfriend hasn't yet, so...yeah."

She looked back at the redhead, who smiled and held out his arm. "I'd like to have the honor, if that's okay with you."

She took his arm and let him bring her to the open space.

You're in my arms
And all the world is gone
The music playing on
For only two

He put his arm around her waist hesitantly, Y/n looking either scared or upset - she was not sure which.

So close together
And when I'm with you,
So close to feeling alive

They began to dance with the other couples in a modern waltz, their spark of 'love' growing into something that felt different, yet genuine.

Romantic dreams must die,
So I bid mine goodbye
And never knew

She smiled at him, any lingering hurt feelings or ones of unsureness fading as he looked back into her e/c eyes, a gentle smile in return at the princess...his princess.

So close was waiting -
Waiting here with you
And now forever I know...
All that I want is...
To hold you
So close

He twirled her around, holding her to his chest. She giggled, head bent.

So close
So close to reaching
That famous happy end

Nancy glanced at them as she passed by, mouth in a thin line. Anyone could see the genuine love that radiated from them. But when she looked back at Robert...nothing.

Almost believing
This one's not pretend

The brightest spotlight seemed to shine on them. Maybe that was just their illusion, but it was one they wanted to stay in.

Now you're beside me

"And look how far we've come..." Gislaine sang - of course knowing the words. Y/n felt her mouth open slightly. Instead of the princely voice he would use before, this one was gentle, imperfect, and full of sincerity.

"So far...we are...so close..." She put her head on his shoulder as the song picked up and he was whirling her around the room, dancing in the middle of the surrounding couples in a large revolution. He picked her up, spinning around with her in his arms.

Until Edward tapped her on the shoulder. "Are you almost ready?"

"Oh...yes."

Nancy took Gislaine's hand, then looked at Y/n. "Is it okay if we dance if you're done then?"

Her face fell, but she said, "No...no, of course not."

Oh, how could I face, face this day
If I should lose you now?

She let Edward lead her away as Nancy danced away with Gislaine.

We're so close
To reaching
That famous happy ending
Almost believing
This one's not pretend
So close...

"You're sad," Edward noticed, confused.

"No, no, I'm just..." she bit her lip, trying to find the words.

"I'll go get your wrap," he said.

So close...
And still so far...

He went off to get it, leaving Y/n to watch Nancy say something to Gislaine, then hug him. At once, she understood why he had been angry with her talking with Robert. It was an ugly feeling.

A hand found its way to her shoulder. She jumped when she turned, finding the old lady from before. "Child..."

"You! You sent me here!"

"I'm so glad to see you! I was so very worried. What a terrible accident that brought you to this terrible place with so much sadness and so much pain."

She glanced uneasily at Gislaine. He was now by himself in the middle of the ballroom, unsurely playing with his hands.

"Oh, yes, pain indeed. So many complicated feelings this world has brought you that you'll only have to take back."

She tried to walk away, but the old lady jumped in front of her, hands on her shoulders. "Oh! But it doesn't have to be that way. Oh, no, no, no...I can stop the hurt, yes. I can make all those bad memories disappear. Yes!" From her cloak, she pulled out the reddest apple Y/n might have ever seen. "Just one bite, my love, and all this will go away. Your life here, the people that you met. You won't remember anything. Just sweet dreams...and happy endings. But you must hurry, you must hurry. The magic will not work unless you take a bite before the clock strikes twelve."

She brought it up to her lips, unsure. "Everything..."

"Hurry now. Hurry. Hurry. Yes! Yes! Yes! That's it. That's it. Hurry. Hurry, yes." She licked her lips grossly.

"Gislaine..." She took a bite and fell at once, the apple rolling from her hand and down the steps to the ballroom. It landed on Gislaine's shoe, who picked it up with a confused look.

M/n dragged her away, pushing through and shouting at everyone. She threw her down in the elevator, beginning to transform back. "Speciosus, formosus, praeclarus..."
