Prologue

"NO. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE," Klaus Mikaelson denied harshly. He had just been told that a werewolf named Hayley Marshall was pregnant with his babies.

"I said the same thing myself," Elijah Mikaelson- his older brother -had said to Klaus, probably trying to reason with him by expressing his own doubts about the matter. Though it didn't work on the stubborn male hybrid.

"This is a lie. You are all lying. Vampires cannot procreate," Klaus continued to deny, getting seemingly angry. Hayley Marshall, the girl carrying the babies, seemed almost bored at his outrage as she kept a neutral expression and her hand on her stomach.

"But werewolves can. Magic made you a vampire, but you were born a werewolf. You're the Original hybrid, the first of your kind. And this pregnancy is one of nature's loopholes," Sophie Deveraux, one of the two witch sisters said to Klaus, also trying to prove the assumption is true.

"You've been with someone else, admit it!" The enraged hybrid screamed at the pregnant brunette werewolf, causing her expression to turn from that of neutrality to an utterly shocked form.

"Hey, I've spent days held captive in a freaking alligator bayou because they think that I'm carrying some magical miracle babies. Don't you think I would've fessed up if they weren't yours?" Hayley fired back, seeming to also become enraged. That is Hayley Marshall for you, ladies and gentleman. A girl who doesn't take any sort of shit from anyone.

"My sister gave her life to perform the spell she needed to confirm this pregnancy. Because of Jane-Anne's sacrifice, the lives of this girl and her babies are now controlled by us. We can keep them safe. Or we can kill them. If you don't help us take down Marcel, so help me, Hayley won't live long enough to see her first maternity dress," Sophie threatened honestly, looking at them all. It had caught Hayley's attention, causing her to turn and question the tanned witch.

"Enough of this. If you want Marcel dead, he's dead. I'll do it myself," Elijah offered, not wanting a hair on Hayley's head to be touched. He wanted that niece, he wanted to have her in his life because he knew that those babies would be the only shot of redemption for his ill-tempered younger brother, who he did believe had some good left inside of him, that just needed to be brought back to the surface.

"No. We can't, not yet. We have a clear plan that we need to follow, and there are rules," Sophie said to Elijah and Klaus, as the Mikaelson man turned to his younger brother, looking as if he were awaiting some reaction that he no doubt meant to provoke. Though called "noble", Elijah Mikaelson was one sneaky bastard if you really looked into his past and who he was.

"How dare you command me, threaten me, with what you wrongfully perceive to be my weaknesses. This is a pathetic deception. I won't hear any more lies," the hybrid screamed. Deep down inside himself though, he knew that they were his babies and they were going to be his weaknesses, but he was in denial and pushed anything of the sorts away. He refused to believe even what he himself was trying to tell him.

"Niklaus!... Listen," Elijah said to the emotionally distraught (and not in the sad way) man. Elijah could hear the babies' heartbeats, and just wanted his brother to listen to them. Understand that those were lives, lives he had helped start. If he wanted them ended, Elijah knew it would be the biggest regret Klaus would ever have. As his duty of being a big brother, he refused to let Niklaus endure any more pain. He refused to let this opportunity slip through Klaus' fingers. Elijah wanted Klaus to realize the importance of having these balls of pureness and light shed into his life.

Klaus did admittedly listen to the heartbeat of the babies, his breathing slowing. He looks at Hayley, then to his brother, and turned his attention to the witches. "Kill her and the babies. What do I care?" Klaus said coldly, turning and leaving as Elijah sighed. Elijah had a plan brewing in his head, one that he knew would have to get to Klaus.

Hayley Marshall was sat at a desk in one of the studies in the home they had just moved into. She typed on a laptop and was surrounded by old texts, when a familiar hybrid walked and waited at the doorway. Klaus paused before he walked in the room to speak with the pregnant wolf. "I thought you might like to know, Elijah is returning to us," Klaus explained to Hayley.

"Congratulations. I guess being diabolical has its perks," Hayley said, looking up to the dirty blonde and back to her laptop with a hidden smile.

"You hardly know him, and yet you miss him. What is it about my brother that always inspires such instant admiration?" Klaus asked the female wolf, looking at the books and then back to her.

"He was kind to me," Hayley said softly with a small shake of her head, after having hesitating. It was true, Elijah had shown only compassion to the girl and it wouldn't end there. For he was only beginning his long infatuation with her. Klaus silently turned to leave, before Hayley called out to him. He didn't turn around, but stood in the door frame as she spoke, "Hey, I learned something today. I think they're girls." Hayley was smiling as after a few moments, the Grinch himself let a small grin appear on his lips. Niklaus was an attractive man, but when he smiled he was more handsome than any man you could dream of.

***

Hayley was sat in a rocking chair in a dress in the babies' nursery. She was a writing a letter, a letter that Klaus didn't know who was it addressed to. He entered the room and leaned against the doorway. "Writing a love letter to one of your many suitors? So, who's the lucky recipient, then?" Klaus asked with a rare genuine smile, "Jackson? Or, Elijah?" The female rolled her eyes at the man, as he playfully smirked, "Don't tell me it's me?" They both laughed as he jokingly said, "I thought I was out of the running ages ago!"

"And the award for 'Biggest Ego' goes to..." Hayley said with a laugh, gesturing towards a still laughing Klaus. She suddenly cut the laughing short as the babies started to kick, making her groan a little. "Oh!" she called out, as Klaus walked towards Hayley, looking concerned.

"How is our littlest wolves?" Klaus asked her, looking into her eyes. For the first time in forever, the two were happy and getting along. He seemed genuinely thoughtful and Hayley seemed to adore it. It almost felt like they were actually a family, minus everyone wanted Klaus and the twins dead, of course.

"Do you want to...?" Hayley asked him softly with a small smile, rubbing her rather large baby bump expectantly. Klaus opened his mouth to speak, but seemed to hesitate as he couldn't decide on an answer. He stepped back, but Hayley gave him a look with a larger smile, causing him to smile as well. "Come on," Hayley said softly, looking down to her baby bump as she did a rather swift nod to it, before looking back at him and giving him a proper good smile.

Klaus knelt down and reached out slowly to touch her abdomen, Hayley looking up at him as he was momentarily startled when he felt the babies kick. It was a beautiful moment and Hayley kept that small and goofy smile plastered on her face as she asked if he felt it, and his own mouth stayed upturned in a smile. One of the best pregnancy memories Hayley ever had with Klaus.

***

Hayley was giving birth to her two little girls. The letter she had been writing was indeed a love letter, but a love letter of a mother. A letter of a mother to her daughters. A letter that couldn't be replicated or replaced. A letter from the heart that could mean more than anything else given to those little girls. Their mother loved them, even before they were born. A love only Hayley could give.

"Dear Zoe and Maya... or Kaitlyn and Danielle...or Angela and Jennifer. To my little girls. Your dad just asked if this was a love letter. I guess it kind of is. I never got to know my mother. I have no idea what she must have thought when she carried me."

Hayley- in the middle of her labor -screamed at Genevieve and Monique as they stood around her, "Ahh! Let go of me, you bitch!" Why couldn't those damned witches leave her alone to give birth in peace?! The werewolf and soon-to-be hybrid mother would be dangerously and fiercely protective and on edge after her birth, ready enough to probably kick some witch ass. You know, as one typically does after they give birth to twins.

"So, I thought I'd write to you girls, so you can know how happy I am at this very moment. How much your father and I can't wait to meet you both..."

Klaus limped into the hospital to find the witches with Hayley, who was shocked and relieved to see him. On a normal occurrence, it would be the opposite. However, she knew that the hybrid would stop at nothing now to keep her and the babies safe. Not months before did he say to kill her and them, and now he was protecting them with all of his willpower. Klaus lunged toward one of the witch guards and ripped his head clean off. Abigail and Genevieve linked hands and telekinetically pinned Klaus to the wall.

"And, I want to make you a promise of three things that you two will have that I never did: a safe home, someone to tell you that they love you every single day, and someone to fight for you, no matter what."

Klaus fought against the spell pinning him to the wall, but he couldn't get free. Monique and Abigail anchored the spell and went back to "helping" Hayley. Though Hayley couldn't obviously done without the "help". Klaus and Hayley both screamed, Hayley because of the labor and Klaus because he couldn't do anything to help.

"In other words, a family. So, there you go, my little
girls. The rest, we're going to have to figure out together. I love you both so much already. Your mom."

After much agonizing labor and pushing and screaming- especially enraged screams from Klaus -the babies had finally been delivered. "There!" Genevieve said aloud, as the screaming came to a halt once they saw one in the arms of the witch. But Hayley continued to push as she groaned, the second child coming. Genevieve went back under the white sheet as the second baby was brought out. This one had Hayley's brunette hair, causing her to smile as tears flowed from her cheeks. The witches cut the umbilical cord and wrapped them in blankets. "You have two beautiful baby daughters. We must start the sacrifice as soon as the moon sets with the morning sky--"

"--Please. Please, can I hold them?" Hayley interrupted, more tears flowing. Genevieve allowed her to hold the babies as she looked down at the two. Hayley looked up to Klaus with a small and proud smile, gesturing to the girl that would later be named Skye, "She looks like me. She has my hair." Klaus felt a tear slip down his face as he looked at the two beautiful girls. Then Genevieve told her she must choose which baby to sacrifice or she'd take both of them and decide which one herself.

***

Hayley, who had been holding her babies, was talking to the two brothers. They had found out about Esther's hole part in all of this, and wouldn't stand it for it. "My parents thought they could protect me. But, in the end, they were slaughtered, and I spent my childhood alone and unloved," Hayley said softly but clearly, looking down at her daughters and smiling at them, while trying to hold back tears. "I made a promise, to my babies, and to myself, that they would not grow up like I did. That they would grow up safe, and loved. And yet, here they are, on their first day in this world, with a grandmother who is bent on sacrificing them--" Hayley started to stutter as she cried, "And a-a mother who has to drink the blood of one of her own babies to survive transitioning into a hybrid. And I'm the one who loves them the most."

***

A car pulled up to Klaus, and Rebekah Mikaelson- a new addition to this story and Klaus' little sister -stepped out. When she saw her brother and her newborn nieces, she smiled widely. Klaus smiled back before greeting his younger blonde sister, "Hello, sister." Rebekah gently touched the babies and stared at them in wonder.

"Oh, she looks like her mother," Rebekah said about Skye with a smile, then looked to Hope, "And this one looks just like you, Nik. Maybe there is a God after all."

Klaus laughed at his sister, looking down at the brunette child. "Well, she has a hint of the devil in her eyes. That's all me," He said softly, "And the other has the same devil in her eyes, but something also angelic about them. Something that she must've acquired from you." Rebekah smiled a little at that, shaking her head. "I need a witch you can trust to cast a cloaking spell," he said to her. Rebekah assured him that she would get one. "No one can ever find them," Klaus warned her.

"I know what to do, Nik," Rebekah said, as they both looked at the two little girls before them. "Perhaps we'll get a white fence. I think that would be lovely," she smiled. Klaus let Rebekah hold the ginger baby who would soon be named Hope as he held Skye up to get one last look at her, then did the same with Hope. Rebekah couldn't stop looking at the two little girls in amazement before Klaus let Rebekah hold Hope again.

"This city would have seen you both dead. But, I will have it your home. And every soul who wishes either of you harm will be struck down, just as sure as my blood runs in the veins of you both," Klaus said to his little girls, kneeling to look them eye-to-eye. He looked devastated and Rebekah just looked horrified.

"You two will return to me," He assures, leaning close to kiss both the girls on their foreheads and cheeks, giving he babies the tiny wooden knight that he carved for Rebekah one thousand years ago, causing Rebekah to look at him and start to cry. "In spite of our differences, Rebekah, there is no one I would trust more with my daughters' lives. Be happy, sister."

"They will be happy, Nik. I promise," Rebekah assured as they smiled at each other. "What're their names?" She asked him, looking down at the two bubbly babies.

Klaus paused for a moment as he thought of names. It then came to him, "Hope and Skye. Their names are Hope Skye." Hope, for the hope of starting a new family. Of finding hope in this large and unfair world. For hoping that maybe there was some way he had redemption. Skye for what he loved the most.

The blue and pinkish-purple or orangey hues that make up everything we look up to. When you look up, you see the sky. Klaus wanted to think of his baby girl when he looked up to that beautiful sky, to know that she was there and okay and that she would be looking up at that same sky too. Klaus started to cry as Rebekah put the two little girls in her car.

***

Rebekah was sat in a rocking chair in their new home in the nursery, rocking with the two babies in either arms. She decided that she would tell Hope and Skye a fairytale about their lives, about the struggles that their parents were facing and the cold hardships they must endure to get their little girls safely returned to them. Auntie Bex was always good at storytelling, anyway. "Once upon a time, there was a majestic king who lived with his noble brother in a kingdom where music and art were celebrated. The king did not foresee having children, but he lived in an enchanted land where all things were possible. In time, he was blessed with two beautiful baby daughters, for whom he wished only peace."

The two little girls cooed at their aunt Rebekah and she smiled at them, "Still, the king had demons who pursued him. There was a ruthless beast who wanted to take the kingdom for her own. Armed with a pack of untamed creatures, she drove the other magical creatures from the land. And, there was a wicked sorceress with enchanted stones that weakened the king every full moon. Seeing the shadow his enemies cast upon his home, the king was driven to send his beloved princesses away, convincing all who remained that they were forever lost."

"The king, in his sorrow, turned away from the world. The castle closed its doors, and the kingdom fell. Some say that the only light that shines in the castle illuminates the shadow of the once majestic king in the room meant for his children. But, as the ruthless beasts took rule over the fallen king's realm, little did they know that he and his brother would not rest until their enemies were vanquished. For they believed that one day, they would heal their kingdom and bring their precious princesses home so that they might live happily ever after," Rebekah finished with a smile, the girls both asleep in her arms.

Rebekah stood and laid Skye on the changing table, watching with wide eyes as she stirred, before sighing in relief when she stopped. Rebekah put Hope in their crib and sat Klaus' wooden knight next to her. When she went to grab Skye, the baby's eyes opened and she started to cry. "Oh shh, shh, sweetie. Auntie Bex has got you... oh, dear. Nik was right, you do have that little devil in your eyes," she joked softly, smiling as she rocked the baby to sleep and sat her next to Hope, where the little knight was between them. Rebekah turned the lights out and left them to sleep for the evening.

***

Suddenly, Klaus and Hayley's black SUV sped down the driveway. Klaus didn't have a chance to park before Hayley rushed out of the car and sprinted towards Rebekah and Elijah, who each held one of the girls in their arms. She stopped in her tracks as soon as she saw Hope and Skye, as though she couldn't believe her eyes. The two Mikaelson siblings smiled at her as Elijah took Skye's hand since he was holding her and looked down to her, making her give her mother a wave.

Klaus soon caught up to them and Elijah wasted no time in handing Skye to Klaus and Rebekah handed Hope to Hayley. "Hi!" Hayley said to hope, hugging her tightly to her and breathing a sigh of relief.

Behind her, Klaus was nearly in tears as he held Skye. He was too overwhelmed to move, to kiss her head or do anything. She was just so perfect, just like her mother. Hayley was unable to meet Elijah's eye as she turned so Klaus could see Hope as well. Hope cooed happily, which caused Skye to coo back, making their parents hold proud smiles. They smothered both the girls with kisses.

***

After being human for a few moments and realizing she wasn't shifting, and after killing Kara and running to attack Klaus, she started to talk with him. But it all boiled down to what he was saying to her, "There's a very short list of people who've tried to take Hope and Skye away from me, and you're the only one left breathing."

"Are you that delusional, Klaus? You cursed all of us! Every wolf that I fought for, everyone that stood up for our daughters! You took all of them away from their families!" Hayley yelled, completely enraged.

"Yes, yes, your precious pack, that family you chose over us, and in doing so, you chose over our girls," Klaus argued back.

"Is that what you were planning on telling them when they got older and asked for me? That I abandoned them?" Hayley asked, stunned. More furious than anyone had ever seen her, Hayley broke an end-table and used the broken leg as a stake and lunged for Klaus. Klaus took the stake and threw it aside, watching in frustration as Hayley jumped high into the air and onto the staircase railings, which she used as leverage to jump onto the balcony. She leapt to where Klaus had appeared and started to punch him, which he dodged using his inhuman vampiric speed. Finally, she started to angrily shove him in the chest as she pushed him him backwards and yelled furiously at him, "My parents left me! Yours turned their backs on you! Look at us now, Klaus!"

Hayley continued to hit him hard in the chest but Klaus was suddenly stricken with the realization of what he had done, and could only stare in horror at her as she screamed at him in frustration. Elijah returned home and tried to intervene from below the compound, but failed. Hayley ignored him and continued to shove him in the chest, "They deserve something better than what we had, and all I have ever wanted for them is something better!" As Klaus stood silently and horrified, Hayley grew more frustrated, "Fight back! FIGHT BACK!"

Klaus' eyes widen when he noticed something behind her, or rather someone. And by someone, two living girls. When Hayley turned around, she saw her little girls toddling over to them, Hope doing it perfectly fine and Skye managing, but with some extra added effort that Hope didn't need. Hayley's mouth opened in shock as a wave of guilt washed over her face, covering her mouth either her hand in horror. "Ohhh. They're walking. When did they start walking?" she asked softly, looking overwhelmed and ready to bawl her eyes out. But before Skye could fall on her face, Hayley rushed to her and picked her up into her arms as she held her close.

Klaus stayed silent as he picked Hope up, looking at Hayley, who looked as though she was on the brink of breaking down. Hayley was too overwhelmed to remember she was covered in blood, and she started to cry as Skye cooed in her arms and Hope reached out for her. "I missed it. I missed everything," Hayley said softly, kissing Skye's cheek, then Hope's.
Behind her, Klaus looked tearful as well, and seemed to be guilty and ashamed of what he'd done to Hayley.

"Please, be seated," Mary- another new person to add to this, who happens to be the girls soon-to-be stepgrandma -said. The guest then all sat back in their chairs, "We gather together as a community seeking peace, inspired by this couple standing before you. There was a time when werewolves saw themselves not as cursed, but blessed with connection to our most pure selves. And tonight, we honor that blessing with the long-awaited unification of the two Crescent bloodlines."
During Mary's speech, Hayley caught the eye of Klaus and smiled, but Klaus' face remained blank.

Mary performed a hand-fasting by binding Hayley and Jackson's wrists with baby's breath flowers, "In doing so, we choose to embrace Hayley's vampire nature. With this union, Hayley will share her unique gifts with her pack." Mary placed a long lit match into Hayley and Jackson's linked hands to light their ceremonial candle, "And now, your vows."

Jackson took a deep breath before he spoke to start, "I pledge to honor you and defend you and yours above all others."

"To share in blessings and burdens. To be your advocate, your champion," Hayley continued.

"To be your comfort, your sanctuary, and for as long as we both shall live," Jackson trailed, waiting for Hayley.

"To be your family," Hayley finished with a smile, as Jackson repeated back what she said. They smiled at each other and Elijah looked like he was about to cry. Probably because he loves Hayley, but I mean, who cares about love these days anyways, pfft.

"You two have endured all the traditional werewolf rituals and trials. There is only one remaining—Jackson, you may kiss your bride," Mary announced with a smile. Jackson looked a little scared, but Hayley smiled encouragingly. He started at the beautiful hybrid for a long moment, admiring her beauty before he cupped her face and kissed her. Elijah looked away— proving my suspicious to be right —and Klaus looked at him sympathetically. When Hayley and Jackson finally pulled away, both of their eyes glowed gold, indicating that the Unification Ceremony worked. They smiled at each other happily and turned to look at the crowd. The guests all looked at each other curiously. Josh and Davina were smiling, and when Aiden looked back to smile at Josh, his eyes glowed gold as well. Everyone began to smile and chatter, all thrilled that the ceremony had empowered their pack. Marcel and Gia looked at each other, slightly nervous at this new development, but Klaus looked relieved like most of the pack.

***

It was the perfect day. The sun was out, people were chatting, and a staggering drunk man had bumped into Klaus. Nothing different here, just New Orleans for you. But the thing was, it was too perfect. It was Klaus and Camille. It was the day they had met. But time travel was impossible, at least right now, so how could that be? In reality, Camille was resting on her death bed as Klaus held her hand. He was in her mind, making sure the death that he knew and expected would be a peaceful and sweet one. But as Camille started to talk of when she was gone and Klaus refused to, something she said had stuck out to him completely. "You need to be the light for your little girls. For Hope and Skye."

***

Klaus was standing in the middle of the Mikaelson Compound thinking of what was to come. He was holding Skye and Hope in his arms, looking down at his two little girls. The one thought going through his mind was that he had to survive for them. He couldn't bear the thought of leaving his two little girls alone without a father. "What better life might have awaited you, were another man your father? All those who have loved me, have lived to regret it. But I do know this, my littlest wolves, I will do right by you." He then brought the two girls into his chest.
