Chapter 4
Kim Jun-Hee called for a meeting later that afternoon.
“If they're gathering everyone again, do you think they've…” Eun-Ha trailed off as her eyes befell Jun-Hee, Yoon-Seo and Jung-Won, all of whom were looking at a map of the retreat center.
Yoon-Ji pursed her lips before shaking her head. "Don't get too hopeful, Eun-Ha."
While it didn't exactly hurt to think positively, it was still better to equip themselves for the worst, what with how unpredictable the game had been so far.
“Is everyone here already?” The Class President asked as the crowd grew. So-Mi glanced at everyone in the hall, and gave Jun-Hee an affirming nod.
“Then, I’ll be frank with you guys, we still have no way to contact the outside world.” Jun-Hee shook his head, confirming everyone's suspicions.
Yoon-Ji snuck a glance at her friends, catching onto Eun-Ha’s defeated expression. She took the other's hand, pressing lightly with her own to ground the girl.
Jun-Hee gestured to the board where the entire property of the youth center mapped out. "But then we figured, what if– there was a place the boundaries didn't reach?”
“We checked everywhere around the building, and it's as we thought, the lines wrap around the entire center. All except one, the entrance to the trail, it was left open.”
“In this map here you can see, there's a mountain between that trail,” he gestured to the map before continuing. “And at the end is a village.”
The male paused, letting everyone digest his words before he continued. "We might be able to find people there who could help."
Unfortunately for Jun-Hee, his plan did not gain any favors from the class.
“Say we try to leave, what if we end up dead too?” Kim Jin-Ha voiced out. He stared the president straight in the eyes and asked, "What happens next?"
“He's right," Lee Joo-Young chipped in, expressing her displeasure while her friend Mi-Na clung to her side. She looked at everyone, before resuming her line of thought. “Isn’t it too dangerous for us?”
Jun-Hee thought the same, but right now, this was the closest thing to an actual plan they had.
He averted his gaze. "No, we'll be fine as long as we don't cross the line."
Yoon-Ji was unconvinced.
"Sorry," she began, everyone turned their heads to hear what she had to say. "I don't mean to ruin this by being pessimistic, but we– shouldn't we at least take some actual precautions?”
Yoon-Ji never considered herself one to actively participate in class discourse. Sure, she would normally speak on issues when she saw them– like when some classmates would openly harass others– but oftentimes, especially when it came to discussions that the president and vice president could manage on their own, she didn't feel the need to partake.
Now that their lives hinged on it, though, Yoon-Ji knew she needed to speak up.
Don't get her wrong, Yoon-Ji had no plans to go against Jun-Hee's entire proposal. If anything, it was better as opposed to doing nothing. The problem was that the plan lacked assurance for their overall safety.
If it wasn't fraught with uncertainties then it would be all fine and well. But at this point, when they'd already lost three of their own, carelessness meant death.
“Traps, wild animals… sabotage,” Yoon-Ji swallowed her saliva, “I don't think this is going to be as simple as just saying not to cross the line, so I'm wondering if we have at least any…precautions for those?”
The class pondered her words. If they weren't already skeptical before, the girl's words completely turned them away from the plan now.
Kyung-Jun also piped up, “I agree with the Pres’ plan, it beats just waiting here, so it won't hurt to give it a shot.”
Yoon-Ji glanced towards the male, surprised by the outward expression of agreement with the class president. “But how do we know nothing would happen? And do we all actually have to go? cause that seems pretty inefficient.”
The tension heightened with each word they dropped, the president watched as fear coursed through his classmates' faces, putting pressure on his plan.
He couldn't even blame them for it either, especially not Yoon-Ji, whose best friend had been taken away from her in a blink of an eye. There was a lot for them all to lose, so being complacent was out of the question.
“You’re right,” Jun-Hee directed to the girl, “A lot of things can happen during the search.”
"And yes," he agreed with Kyung-Jun, gazing over everyone and then briefly pausing at Yoon-Ji, who heeded his words carefully. "We can't all go, which is why I decided that I'll be going on my own. That way, the risk will be significantly lessened."
Shouts of disbelief and objection sounded at his proposal.
Yoon-Ji immediately shook her head no, thinking- perhaps the game was already getting to some of them. “Jun-Hee, we don't need you or anyone else to do anything alone.”
“But you're right, kinda. We could lessen the risk by only having a few volunteers, maybe our most physically active students can help with that.” The athletes Jang Hyun-Ho and Kim Dong-Hyun nodded.
“We can do it,” Hyun-Ho announced. Better them than one person, the class president no less, to be the sacrificial lamb.
Jun-Hee bit his lips, carefully considering the matter before conceding. “Okay, then. We'll have them join and–”
"–I'll also come with," Yoon-Seo cut in, glancing at the president with a paling expression.
Jung-Won furrowed her brows, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder. "Yah, didn't you hear them? You can't, Yoon-Seo. You'll become a burden if you fall behind."
The president, aware of his friend's weak constitution, glanced back at Yoon-Seo and told her, "Stay here. The mountain trail will be difficult.”
Despite the president's words, the girl and her short-haired friend continued to argue, one explaining why she had to go while the other continuously shot her down.
Things got even more troublesome when the vice president scrambled to volunteer herself along with one of her unknowing buddies, Woo-Ram. She tried to persuade others from her clique to join, but was turned down.
‘What the hell does she think she's doing?’ Yoon-Ji frowned. They needed the right people to make the trip, it was for this exact reason she questioned Jun-Hee’s plan in the first place.
“So-Mi,” Yoon-Ji spoke up, causing the girl to pause. “There’s no need to force them to join. It's already risky bringing too many people, and it'll be even more risky to bring those who don't actually want to go. They're better off staying here.”
So-Mi and her friends had the nerve to look offended but ultimately stopped themselves from saying anything once they noticed Jun-Hee’s agreement.
“Like I was saying, Hyun-Ho and Dong-Hyun will come along,” the class president reiterated, picking up where he was cut off. “I and So-Mi as well.”
He passed over the names of other students who had reluctantly tried to volunteer, scanning the rest of the class before posing the question, “Does anyone else want to actually volunteer?”
As soon as the words left his lips, the remaining students averted their gazes, finding the idea of venturing onto the trail too risky to entertain. Yoon-Ji briefly glanced at Kyung-Jun, who showed little inclination to volunteer.
‘So that's why he was asking.’ She realized.
“What?” The delinquent grumbled, noticing her stare.
Yoon-Ji shifted her eyes away. “It’s nothing.”
“Wait, why go…?!” Yeon-Woo's voice hissed, startling Yoon-Ji. She immediately walked towards her group of friends, finding the guys clinging onto Eun-Ha with distressed looks.
“What's going on?” Yoon-Ji's gaze shifted from Eun-Ha to Yeon-Woo.
“Yah, Yoon, please talk her out of it,” Eun-Chan urged, “Eun-Ha wants to join the search, but… you know it's dangerous.”
“You want to join the search?” Yoon-Ji’s brows furrowed as she studied her friend's face.
She'd been friends with Eun-Ha for years now, and she was intimately acquainted with the girl's personality, specifically, her stubbornness. Still, she couldn't begin to fathom what brought this decision on.
“You don't know what could happen out there!” Yeon-Woo raised his voice, trying to get the girl to reconsider.
Although she shared the same doubts as her friends, a look at Eun-Ha told her– if she was this determined, then trying to dissuade her would only prove futile.
"Are you sure about this?" Yoon-Ji asked, prompting a shocked 'Yoon!' from both Yeon-Woo and Eun-Chan.
When Eun-Ha nodded, only then was Yoon-Ji able to see the crack in her expression. The sorrow in those eyes, as if regretful putting her friends in such a predicament.
Yoon-Ji sighed.
“I know I can't change your mind, so I'll join you. It'll be better than letting you go alone,” she announced, and the guys looked confused, even slightly hurt.
“Can't you guys just let the others do it?” Eun-Chan asked Yoon-Ji, trying to see the reason behind their actions.
“Eun-Ha doesn't want to.” She nodded towards her friend, “If I'm there then atleast she won't be by her own.”
Eun-Ha gently tugged her wrist away from Yeon-Woo’s hold and then took both his and Eun-Chan's hands together. “Me and Yoon-Ji will look out for one another,” she assured them.
Yeon-Woo and Eun-Chan looked at each other, before being left with no other choice than to yield. The girls nodded thankfully and finally made their way over to the others.
As the pair joined the other volunteers, the rest of the students observed with a mix of relief and guilt.
“Most of you are too weak to hike anyways,” everyone's attention went to Hyun-Ho as he broke the solemn silence.
The athlete saw the others’ expressions and stepped forward, his striking white jumpsuit contrasting starkly against the map that delineated the trail they would walk. "So, just leave this to us. We'll make sure to get help."
A sense of reassurance washed over the group, bolstered by Hyun-Ho's words.
Yet, despite this newfound determination, there lingered a choking tension, an acknowledgment of the dangers they might have to face once out there, with no one else to call for help but themselves.
–
After a short briefing, the group finalized their preparations and set off to the entrance of the trail. A few students joined them to personally bid their goodbyes, while the rest stayed behind.
The travel was fast, and before long they had already reached the entrance of the trail. Their eyes settled on the flight of stairs littered with dried leaves that led up to the unknown.
A solemn silence filled the air as the students looked at one another before imparting their farewells.
“You guys,” a teary Yeon-Woo sniffled, holding a sob in as he looked between Yoon-Ji and Eun-Ha. “Be careful and come back safe…”
The girls nodded at his words and turned towards Eun-Chan, who had been keeping silent since they arrived at the entrance of the trail.
He still didn't say anything, instead, he raised his arms and motioned for them to get close. The four shared a tight group hug, filled with warmth that so rivaled the heat of the afternoon sun.
It was their first group hug as four, the first after the passing of Heo-Yool, and it was near impossible to ignore the missing presence. But at that moment they still desperately tried to find comfort in each other's arms.
“Be careful, everyone!” Yoon-Seo told the students, having finished saying her own goodbyes to Jun-Hee.
More reminders were exchanged before the president finally climbed up a step and urged his group on.
The thing about the youth center was that it was surrounded by a dense forest that stretched out for miles. The nearest city was a ten-hour ride away, which which made the place perfect for a relaxing experience.
‘A relaxing retreat my ass! I knew I shouldn’t have went.’ Yoon-Ji thought back to days before the trip. She had made a fuss back then, specially after learning the retreat would be set at such an isolated place.
Turns out, she was right to be worried because now they were stuck here, playing a twisted game that was, horrifyingly enough, made in the likeness of her and her friend's favorite pastime.
“You alright?” Jang Hyun-Ho asked after seeing the girl lagging behind. “Do you need anything? water? food?”
Picking up their voice amidst the quiet of the forest, the others in front of the line paused to look back. Yoon-Ji shook her head no, motioning to continue climbing up the trail. “Sorry, everyone. I was just thinking about this whole…situation.”
Dried leaves cracked under their steps as they continued, each thinking deeply about Yoon-Ji’s words. The way things have been going left them no time to fully digest the matter of their situation. All they knew was that they had to survive. But now that this was brought up, their long-forgotten questions resurfaced once again.
Who was responsible for this? What kind of people looked at a class of young high school students and thought they had to be put in such a gruesome environment and fight for their lives? How did they kill their classmates without lifting a hand?
Despite these questions, the reality remained that their fates were growing more uncertain each second they spent within this morbid game.
“The trail will reach the end soon,” Jun-Hee spoke from the frontmost, chasing everyone away from their thoughts. “Everyone, be careful while climbing up. It'll only get steeper from here.”
The group heeded the class president's words, carefully navigating the pathway bordered with the stark white line.
This went on for an hour or so. They would occasional take breaks to make sure no one passed out from thirst, hunger, or exhaustion, and then they would slow down whenever a particularly rocky climb was met.
They were advancing pretty well, and soon enough after what felt like hours, they reached a slope only some ways away from the edge. It wasn't very high, but the lack of steps posed a huge problem to the students.
The president took it upon himself to make the first climb. With the assistance of Dong-Hyun, he got to the top and found himself on a stable footing. Everyone else followed after with his help.
Yoon-Ji felt a pit form in her stomach as she looked at the height of the slope. She'd never done anything like this before, so this was a first. She tightened her grip on the strap of her sling bag before slowly making her way up.
Hyun-Ho and Eun-Ha hung back, watching closely as she scaled the slope.
“Here, Yoon,” Eun-Ha lent a hand to assist. Yoon-Ji took it and pushed herself up the last step, but it was then that the foot she used slipped.
“Ack-!” The girl shrieked, her body losing all its balance and pelting back down the start of the slope. Once she reached the bottom, the girl yelled, pain shooting up from her rolled ankle as well as her elbow, which she used to stop herself from rolling any further from the trail.
“Yoon!” The other members of the group looked over the slope while Hyun-Ho carefully scaled the way back down to check on the girl. Eun-Ha stayed at the top, shaking as she monitored her friend's condition.
“What happened?” An alerted Jun-Hee asked, shuffling past the others to check. The sight that met him was of Yoon-Ji, lying on the ground with visible bruises and scratches on her skin. The president immediately handed his map to Dong-Hyun and scaled the slope to get to the pair.
“Must’ve stepped on loose soil,” Hyun-Ho concluded as he looked at the incline. The athlete turned to the girl, who had her mouth shut tight as if to prevent any more noise from escaping, “Do you feel like anything’s broken?”
Yoon-Ji nodded before wincing as she looked up through her lashes. “Don't mind me and go on ahead, we're wasting sunlight here.”
“No,” Jun-Hee shook his head, “We can't leave you here.” Hyun-Ho also made a noise in agreement.
“I'm just going to lag behind, Jun-Hee,” Yoon-Ji motioned towards her dark purple bruises. The president trailed his eyes over the injury, feeling responsible for the state the other was in.
Yoon-Ji recognized the regretful expression over the male's face and quickly told him, “Come on, stop whatever it is you're thinking right now, this isn't your fault.”
She continued, “It was just an accident. It's not on you, okay? Now, go on ahead.”
“I'm the class president, I should've-”
The male was cut off as Yoon-Ji told him, “Come on, Jun-Hee! Nothing’s going to get done if we both continue to wallow in self-pity.”
Her words were blunt, and for a moment, she figured she might have gone too far. But when Jun-Hee took her words well and without a trace of bitterness, she was relieved to know she'd gotten through him.
“Okay, but,” Yoon-Ji sighed, waiting for another wave of self-blame, but Jun-Hee did no such thing, instead announcing, “We’re not gonna leave you here, okay? I'll even carry you if I have to.”
“She should've been careful in the first place,” a distressed So-Mi remarked from the top, earning herself a glare from Eun-Ha. It was clear the vice president was becoming impatient, which was perfectly understandable, but Eun-Ha had reason to suspect this reaction was motivated by something else entirely.
The vice president ignored the heat of the stare and asked, “Can she still walk?”
Yoon-Ji scoffed and asked back, “You ever tried walking with an ankle like this, So-Mi?”
“It's sprained,” Hyun-Ho informed Yoon-Ji before directing his words to the president. “She can't walk like this, she'll need a splint on her ankle to keep it from getting worse. Think you can do it, Pres?”
Jun-Hee nodded and Yoon-Ji let the president swiftly and efficiently brace her ankle with a splint. As they slowly finished up, the others who were already over the slope talked amongst themselves.
“Poor Yoon,” Eun-Ha felt guilt, knowing that in the first place, Yoon-Ji hadn't meant to volunteer, and only joined out of concern for her. “I don't think she's okay… maybe we should go back to have her treated.”
“Are you saying we should go back now?” An irate So-Mi echoed. She glared at Eun-Ha. “We're already all the way out here, going back will be a waste.”
The vice president leaned over the slope and addressed Yoon-Ji, “Let's keep going a bit more, yeah?”
Although she didn't like how the other was going about it, Yoon-Ji nodded in agreement. She felt like all the moments that led up to this, and even her injury, would all be meaningless if they just went back to the youth center empty-handed. “Eun-Ha, I'm okay. We don't need to go back now, not when we're nearly there.”
“But, you can't walk in that state,” The sight of the girl falling from the height replayed in her head, and from the corner of her mind, it overlaid with the scene of Heo-Yool falling to his demise. She shivered and continued, “We can just stay here too and wait for them to come back. At least we won't aggravate your injuries then.”
“And what if you put yourselves in more danger?” So-Mi interjected, before going on to say, “You know we're responsible for you guys. If something happens, we'll have to be the ones to face your friends.”
“You guys, going back or continuing will be just as tiring,” Dong-Hyun cut into the conversation, “just putting it out there. In the end, it's up to Yoon-ji what she can manage.”
“I’ll continue,” Yoon-Ji sent Eun-Ha a short, apologetic look before nodding at Jun-Hee. So-Mi also nodded, satisfied with the outcome of the conversation.
With that out the way, Hyun-Ho and Jun-Hee assisted the girl over the slope, afterwards, the latter carried her on his back so they could continue progressing.
Yoon-Ji wrapped her arms loosely around Jun-Hee’s shoulders and trained her gaze towards the trail.
“You okay there? Comfortable?” Jun-Hee asked, adjusting his hold on the girl.
“Fine. Could be better though. I don't like being sent dirty stares,” Yoon-Ji scoffed, avoiding meeting eyes with the vice president, who, although walking ahead of them, would constantly look back at her and give her a glare.
Jun-Hee looked towards the frontmost, briefly making eye contact with So-Mi before the girl averted her stare. He sighed, telling his carry-on, “Sorry about that…”
The class president wasn't a stranger to the feelings So-Mi held towards him. For a long time, he'd been subject to her loving gazes, her words of praise, and declarations of awe. He was flattered, as anyone would be, but he was sure he had no such affections to return. He didn't know how to directly tell her that, though.
“Why apologize?” Yoon-Ji asked. It wasn't as if he could control how So-Mi acted, her decision to do such things as a result of her affections was on her and her own being only. “I mean, you don't see Na-Hee doing anything like that when someone else talks to Hyun-Ho.”
This elicited a laugh from Jun-Hee, “That's one thing to compare it to, huh?” The pair looked at the aforementioned athlete who joined up with Dong-Hyun and led everyone on behalf of the president.
The president shook his head and said, “I think they're different though, since it's clear that they only like each other.”
“I guess…” Having brought this up, Yoon-Ji couldn't help but compare it, “Just like you and Yoon-Seo, huh?”
Jun-Hee was taken aback for a moment, before he, to Yoon-Ji's surprise, shook his head. “I and Yoon-Seo are close, but we're not like that.”
The girl thought back to Yoon-Seo and how she fretted over Jun-Hee to the point of arguing with Jung-Won. She recalled how Yoon-Seo would almost always put the male over her own well-being, compared it to how the other acted, and realized, ‘Ah, so it's like that.’
“What about you?” Jun-Hee asked, admittedly curious about Yoon-Ji's own love life. He'd been interested in her since their first year- whether it was her looks, her personality, or her ability to get on well. In all, most people had only good things to say about her. But never had he heard of her actually getting with anyone.
Yoon-Ji hummed and tilted her head, “Never really thought of it, you know?”
Having been with Heo-Yool and her friends for years, she never really felt the urge to get into romance. Sure, she would occasionally crush on someone, but the level of admiration was only surface level, and she never felt the need for deeper relations.
“Not even now?”
Yoon-ji huffed, a tinge of bitterness at the thought of their situation. “Especially not now. We’re a bit too busy thinking about how to escape and...not die, so maybe when this all ends?”
“Huh,” the class president trailed off, having already expected as much. Though, hearing the latter part of her answer, he couldn't help but blurt out, “Guess I'll keep that in mind.”
The girl sputtered, lightly hitting the back she was settled against before snickering. The lighthearted conversation distracted her from most of her ache, and she was thankful to have been able to talk to someone even if the topic wasn't exactly her forte.
After they settled down from the height of the conversation, the pair finally realized they were slightly lagging behind the others and tried to catch up. When they did, they were met with a variety of curious looks.
“Come on, let's keep going,” the class leader told them, not finding any need to explain anything. They turned to Yoon-Ji, who only lightly shrugged.
The group forged through the path, holding off from taking any more breaks in order to get to their destination while the sun was still up.
“I think we're almost there,” Dong-Hyun announced, folding the map in his shaking hands before frantically looking around.
Finally, hours upon hours of scaling the trail led them to this exact moment.
But then, where the trail should have connected them to the village– was a dead end, whereupon the white line stopped.
“Damn it,” Jun-Hee cursed under his breath. “It's blocked…”
Before anyone could ask what to do next, Dong-Hyun suddenly urged them on, pointing towards the sign. “Come on everyone, look at this.”
Yoon-Ji squinted her eyes, reading the red and yellow sign, which directed them towards the direction of Muryeong Mountain Lodge, which was 1.8 kilometers away.
“Jun-Hee,” Dong-Hyun called towards the president, “There’s another one over there, let me go over there first.”
Without waiting for the class leader to reply, Dong-Hyun went ahead and ran on his own. The others followed behind, yelling for his name. But the male was in a rush, desperate to finally get their long-awaited help.
“Dong-Hyun!” Hyun-Ho tried to get his friend to calm down, but the other was basically inconsolable as he paced himself and ran towards where he thought the line opened for them. However, his feet once again took him to a dead end.
“This is messed up,” Yoon-Ji muttered as Jun-Hee set her down on the ground to take a breather. Was there really no hope of escape from this place? “Is there anywhere else we can go?”
“None that I can see,” Jun-Hee replied, running his hand over his face as he stared defeatedly at the dreaded white line that just barely separated them from the rest of the world.
They all knew the outcome of the trip was uncertain and that there was a chance they could find nothing out here. Still, knowing the hopes they held onto, the fact that they'd been led to believe there was something out broke their resolve.
“Hey guys!” Park Woo-Ram yelled, gaining everyone's attention. “There's a person over there!”
The group almost couldn't believe what Woo-Ram had said, but they swiftly shuffled near the male, with the exception of Yoon-Ji, So-Mi and Dong-Hyun. Once they got near, Woo-Ram told them, “Look through here, there's some guys on the rock formations over there.”
They peeked at the screen and were positively stumped seeing the figure of two persons fishing. Immediately, they got to shouting and yelling, trying desperately to get the attention of who could possibly be their only hope of escaping.
But despite their efforts, the figures didn't do so much as turn or glance.
“We're here!"
“Why aren't they looking here?”
Initially, it wasn't surprising that they couldn't be heard, they were completely out in the open afterall, and their voices paled in comparison to the sound of the raging sea waters. But the longer it went on, the more Yoon-Ji couldn't help but feel unnerved.
“Can I also see that?” She pushed herself up with the help of Jun-Hee, and carefully went over towards Woo-Ram, who handed her the camera.
She looked through the screen, eyes carefully brushing over every detail they could land on when she felt her breath catch in her throat. She looked towards Jun-Hee, who was supporting her weight, and eyes wide open, “They're not moving.”
“What?” Jun-Hee asked, baffled. He was handed the camera, and there he saw exactly what Yoon-Ji described. The figures in the distance remained in the same posture no matter how much time passed. A flight of seagulls hovered above, just as eerily motionless, with not a single trace of movement discernible.
As he and the owner of the camera tried to decipher the mystery of the unmoving figures, the others slipped away, feeling an unbearable amount of dismay from the outcome of the trip.
Among them was Eun-Ha, which drew the worried attention of Yoon-Ji. She saw her friend muttering repeatedly about how everything felt utterly wrong, and putting most of the pressure on her good foot, she carefully followed her friend.
She called out, “Eun-Ha?”
No reply. Yoon-Ji tried to catch up, calling out once more, “Hey, Eun-Ha?”
“Yoon?” Finally, her friend's voice replied, a bit shaky. “D-Don’t mind me… just rest for a bit so that you won't feel tired when we... when we go back.”
Eun-Ha had volunteered to go in hopes of finding help for her friends and herself, to make sure they wouldn't suffer the same fate as poor Heo-Yool. Unfortunately, nothing went their way– her friend got injured, the trail turned out to be a dead end, and more questions than answers popped up.
“We’ll be okay.” Yoon-Ji didn't say anything more, merely drew closer to the girl and took her hand in her own.
“...let's go.” Eun-Ha held her hand, and the two continued to walk along the path, absorbing the bleak view.
The tall cliff stood worn by years of weather, whilst the path itself dropped off steeply.
Minutes passed as quick as they walked. The sun dipped low, signaling the coming of dawn. Even in their tiresome, the pair kept going, a tiny fire of hope in their hearts as they sought for something, anything.
In an instant, their quiet was shattered, replaced by a chaotic flurry of movement and gasps of horror as their trembling eyes bear witness to the unthinkable.
Kim Dong-Hyun, their classmate, had fallen past the line.
