Chapter 12
I must have fallen asleep at some point the night before because I woke up the next morning with Rameses curled up under my arm. Looking around I couldn't see Jasper anywhere, What if Aunt Maya or mom saw him they'd freak. I carefully got up making sure not to wake up Rameses. As I approached the door a small fiery blue orb zoomed out of a nearby ash tray before hovering over my shoulder.
"So, Where should I go?" Your aunt was focused on you yesterday so it was easy enough to avoid her notice, but I doubt she won't be on look out after the stunt we pulled last night." Jasper's whispered voice said in my ear.
"Could you teleport to just outside the hotel room?" I asked if I could just get him past aunt Maya and out of the hotel I could figure something out later.
"Unfortunately I don't have nearly enough energy for that." Jasper replied, well there went that plan.
"Could you hide in like a pocket or something, you're pretty small when you look like this?" I asked quietly.
"Not unless you want to get set on fire, I am a living flame in this form." Jasper replied So I needed something non-flammable so glass or metal. Looking around I spotted an empty beer bottle in the trashcan the same one Sorcha had given Jasper the night before.
"Could you fit in a beer bottle?" I asked pointing to the beer bottle in the trashcan.
"I can but glass heats up very quickly and I think it might melt at high temperatures but I don't know at what temperature." Jasper replied flying over to float over the blue glass bottle.
"What is this about glass melting?" Rameses asked groggily before stretching and repositioning himself to lay with his head and front paws draping over the bed looking a Jasper floating above the bottle.
"Well we have to get Jasper past aunt Maya and we're thinking he could hide in the glass bottle so he doesn't burn anything and then I can hide him in my jacket or something." I explained.
"Why don't we just open the window and he can go on his way?" Rameses asked I hadn't even thought of whether Jasper would want to stick around or not, I had just assumed he would.
"One the wind would blow me out, and I don't really have anywhere else to go so if Morgan is ok with it I'll stick with her." Jasper retorted to which Rameses growled. Seriously what was going on between these two.
"You are not her familiar, you have no place here." Rameses spat standing up on the bed his tail lashing back and forth.
"You're barely her familiar. Didn't she send you flying just last night?" Jasper jeered in return causing Rameses to hiss and his fur to stand on end.
"Enough. Jasper can stay if he wants to." I interrupted before Rameses could retort to which Jasper smirked. "But if you are going to stay you need to at least try to get along with Rameses as he is my familiar and he isn't going anywhere." I continued causing Jasper's smirk to fall. Jasper and Rameses stared each other down in a silent argument.
"Fine." Jasper and Rameses both huffed finally in agreement.
"So let's get Jasper past Aunt Maya." I said moving to grab the glass bottle for Jasper.
"You'll need something to insulate the glass otherwise you will burn your hands." Rameses said jumping down to look around the room. Eventually he trotted into the bathroom before returning a few moments later with a fluffy hand towel in his mouth. Taking the towel from Rameses I wrapped it around the bottle before pointing the mouth toward Jasper.
"You should probably get ready for the day first. The less time I spend in there the less likely it is to melt or burn you." Jasper replied gesturing towards my clothes from yesterday. I quickly got some clothes together before getting ready in the bathroom. With that out of the way I returned to the bedroom at which point Jasper dimmed and flew into the towel wrapped bottle of the dresser. Walking quickly I picked the bottle up and tucked it into my jacket using my left hand in my pocket to keep a hold of the bottle. I had to be careful not to cover the mouth of the bottle or let the heat that was escaping from the bottle mouth burn me I had a feeling I was going to have to get a new jacket soon. Rameses trotted to my left carrying his leash and harness in his mouth as I opened the bedroom door. There must have been a spell on it or something because as soon as I opened the door I heard the yelling voices of aunt Maya and mom echoing down the hall to the main room. Entering the main room I saw Sorcha sitting quietly at the kitchen island looking like she wanted to be anywhere else and eating a bowl of cereal.
"Mom, Aunt Maya. Sorcha and I are going to go look around the city we won't go to far." I said loudly trying to cut through the argument.
"Morgan you shouldn't..." Aunt Maya began only to be cut off by mom.
"Don't you tell my kids what they can and can't do!" Mom retorted angrily her Irish temper showing. "Now you two have fun." Mom said handing me her credit card before turning back to aunt Maya. Seeing the chance to escape Sorcha grabbed the card from my hand and grabbed my arm before dragging me out of the hotel room.
"You have no idea how awkward that was." Sorcha said releasing my arm and we walked to the elevator. Once in the elevator I pulled the bottle out of my jacket and let Jasper out who quickly took the form of a five year old.
"Why?" Sorcha asked looking at the bottle in my hand.
"I had to get him past aunt Maya and I thought it would be harder that it was." I replied tossing the bottle into the trashcan and folding up the hand towel before pocketing it.
"Won't we need that later." Jasper asked as I knelt down to secure Rameses harness and leash.
"I'll pick up a soda bottle or something while we are out. I don't want to get picked up by police for underage drinking." I replied the last thing I needed was to need to get bailed out of jail. I finished with Rameses harness and stood back up just as the elevator reached the ground floor.
"So where should we go?" Sorcha asked.
"I would think that breakfast is the first order of business." I said since I hadn't had breakfast yet and Sorcha's had been interrupted.
"How about there?" Sorcha asked as we left the hotel pointing to a restaurant across the street. It looked like a middle eastern or indian restaurant.
"I could go for indian food." Jasper said excitedly.
"Rameses what do you think?" I asked.
"I would like breakfast. Also people are going to think you are crazy if you talk to yourself." Rameses' voice replied in my mind.
"Ya cause anyone is going to question someone talking to themselves in a big city." I replied it was a stereotype for a reason right.
"The one sided conversations are going to take some getting used to." Sorcha said with a bit of a chuckle.
"Sorry. Indian food for breakfast it is." I replied a little embarrassed. With breakfast decided we went in and ordered.
"So what should we do today." Sorcha asked as we ate. I had ordered the same as Jasper getting something called tikka masala which I split with Rameses.
"I honestly have no idea." I replied I didn't know much about Chicago aside from it being the windy city.
"Well what do we need to accomplish today?" Rameses asked which I relayed to the table.
"You got rid of your bottle so you'll need something else to hide Jasper in and we can't leave Chicago without a souvenir." Sorcha said after a bit of pondering.
"So we'll walk around shopping until we get everything we need and then we'll decide what to do next." Jasper said and I checked my wallet it desperately needed to be replaced it was the wallet Mom had given me when we had first started getting allowances when we were five and the years of wear and tear showed. I had never replaced it because I never really thought it was important I was pretty frugal and had been saving my money since I was ten and seeing as I got 5 dollars a week and got 50 dollars each birthday and Christmas from my grandparents I got quite a bit saved up but I knew it could go really quickly. After we had finished eating I used mom's card to pay and we left walking along the block since eventually we would find a store.
The next block was full of storefronts, the problem being they were all clothing stores that were all way to expensive to even consider. Eventually we found a small hole in the wall store it was still expensive but not nearly as much as the other stores. The store seemed to mostly be focused on anime with several well known ones having merch on the shelves. Sorcha and I walked through the aisles looking foir anything that would stand up to Jasper's flames since if there was anything we definitely needed to have before going back to the hotel it was a way to transport Jasper safely.
"what about this?" Sorcha asked holding up an ornate lantern it was framed in black metal around glass panels in a hexagonal shape. The sign beside the ones on the shelf said they were candle holders made of tempered glass so in theory it could withstand Jasper.
"That might work. What do you think?" I asked Jasper opening the glass pane that was on a hinge. Jasper looked around briefly before turning into his wisp form and flying into the lantern. The top of the lantern had a ring at the top obviously for hanging it from a ceiling or wall. I used it to carry around the lantern and after ten minutes of walking around the store, avoiding the gaze of other patrons and employees I had no trouble carrying the lantern. Once we were in a back corner of the store away from others I opened the Lantern again and Jasper quickly returned to a human form.
"That should work." Jasper said while I inspected the inside of the lantern which didn't show any signs of damage. I was about to ask Sorcha what she thought but her attention was on a keychain display. My phone chimed as I got a text, which I found out was from mom telling us to head back to the hotel.
"Sorcha, mom says to head back." I told Sorcha, we headed for the register where I paid for the lantern in cash which was more expensive than I would have liked. We were on our way back to the hotel when Sorcha stopped to look at a kiosk that had keychains, I waited patiently texting mom that we were on our way back while Sorcha decided on a Chicago city skyline keychain. Once Sorcha had her souvenir we were on our way again. Things were still tense between Maya and mom when we got back so we decided to just head for our room with a quick hello to let them know we were back.
