Chapter 9
"Hey, Mex!" said Jeikeh, grinning at her as he opened the door, standing coyly outside his house. He waved. Mexico noticed he had a bit of peanut butter on his hand, but didn't really think much of it, she was far too nervous. Jeikeh gave her a quick hug and then opened the door widely.
"Hi!" Mexico giggled, blushing. She was wearing so much makeup she wouldn't be surprised if her face cracked, but had decided to keep her look "natural" as she'd heard that that's what boys liked.
She allowed herself to be ushered inside, where she took off her coat to reveal a flirty pink skirt and a white top. She had practised her sexy eyes in the mirror for a good forty minutes previously and was thus fairly confident in her seducing ability. She couldn't wait to rip all of Jeikeh's clothes off, and then-
"Hey, Mecsica!" called a cheery voice, ripping Mexico out of her dirty daydreams. It was Jeikeh's mom, a short, skinny woman in her 40s. She waved at her from the kitchen, where she was busily preparing something that smelled of chicken. "I'm Jeikeh's mom, Djozmeen!" (she pronounced it Jasmine, but Mexico knew that Jeikeh's family tradition of having oddly spelled names hadn't begun with him).
"Hi" Mexico answered, not having the heart to tell Djozmeen that her name was Mexico. Besides, she was still caught a little off guard because of what she had been interrupted in thinking about.
"Jeikeh's told me so much about you!" His mom gushed, coming out of the kitchen with a twirl of her serving spoon. "My god, you're just adorable!"
At this, she pinched Mexico's cheek. Mexico smelled lemon and thyme and smiled awkwardly, just hoping that her makeup was still flawless.
"Jeikeh, dad's gonna be home soon." Djozmeen informed her son, turning abruptly from Mexico towards him.
"Ok mom, we're not gonna be here anyway!" Jeikeh grinned. "We're going to a restaurant!"
He said this with the air of a four year old talking about being allowed to watch TV for the first time.
"Oh, of course honey! I forgot! Oh how adorable, you two! Don't do naughty things!" gushed the proud momma. Then she pinched Mexico's cheek again, leaving her as startled as Trump was when he found out he couldn't fuck his own daughter.
Mexico was slightly disappointed when she realised that they would be in a public place in which PDA was generally not accepted. However, she contented herself with the knowledge that she could spend the evening playing hard to get, so much that Jeikeh would have to at least kiss her afterwards.
She waited, looking on in adoration as Jeikeh tied his shoelaces and put on his coat. Then, shouting a hasty goodbye to his mother, he closed the door behind him. He turned to Mexico with a wide grin. "Let's go!"
Mexico's heart was pounding like the hooves of a startled animal as she got into Jeikeh's Ford Fiesta. "Paid for this baby myself," he'd announced proudly, and she had nodded, impressed.
"So how long ago did you get your license?" asked Mexico in a nervous attempt to make small talk as they pulled out of the driveway.
Jeikeh looked at her, confused. "License?" he asked, wrinkling his forehead.
There was an awkward silence. Mexico gripped the edge of her seat so hard her knuckles turned white. "Never mind." she breathed.
Jeikeh shook his head in a perplexed manner. "Anyway." he said. "The car made it so much easier to pick up chicks!"
Mexico frowned. She had known he was a fuckboy, but until now hadn't been sure to what extent. She felt a surge of jealousy, hating all the "chicks" that had ever had the misfortune to be "picked up" by Jeikeh. It was only when her fists started clenching and she started having disturbing thoughts involving homicide did she realise that she was overreacting a little.
Anyway, it wasn't like she was in love with Jeikeh or anything. She just felt a little possessive. That was perfectly normal. She relaxed a little more, even managing to loosen up enough to perform her infamous sexy eyes on Jeikeh.
They arrived at the restaurant, a Greek place. Jeikeh parked his car in the tiny parking lot the restaurant had, then looked at Mexico. "You ready?"
The latter smiled coquettishly. "Whenever you are, baby." she said, then kicked herself for being so outgoing. Hard to get my ass, she told herself bitterly. Cool it, Satan.
Jeikeh grinned again. "I need a spray tan." he said, randomly.
Mexico threw him a calculating look. Indeed he did. He was beginning to look white, his trademark orangeness had faded to a pasty yellow.
"I think you're handsome no matter what." She said with faux shyness.
"Yeah, but I need a spray tan anyway." Jeikeh repeated.
Mexico sighed. Such a determined, driven man. No wonder he was totally her type.
They entered the restaurant and took their seats. Mexico had taken the liberty of reserving a candlelit table for two in the very corner of the restaurant so they could be undisturbed.
The waitress came and took their orders (Jeikeh ordered a Gyro with fries and onion rings, Mexico got the Greek salad- she didn't want her breath to smell bad), then they started talking while they waited for their food. Mostly, Jeikeh talked and Mexico listened, because she was so enthralled by everything he had to say, and because she was trying to drink her Cola suggestively.
"I find blonde girls spicy!" Jeikeh had said, at one point, and when Mexico pouted he'd added. "But you're so much hotter!" hastily, which made her heart skip a joyful beat
In her mind, she could hear Barbara-Ann's sarcastic comment. "Of course he finds bland, boring girls spicy, he's never had seasoned food his entire life!"
Mexico cleared her throat, focusing on the table and Jeikeh's wonderful face, illuminated by the candlelight in such a way that he looked almost orange again. Mexico sighed at the sight and leaned closer and closer towards him.
Suddenly, there was the noise like a toilet flushing, which ruined the moment completely. Mexico didn't realise what it was until Jeikeh pulled his phone out.
"Let me take this call, sorry, babe."
Mexico nodded, exhilarated at the use of the word babe. She would have let him take three thousand phone calls if he would just call her babe every time he had to get up.
"Hey." Jeikeh answered. "No, wait." He turned to Mexico to mouth sorry as he got up and walked towards the back of the restaurant. "What's wrong? I'm having dinner with Mexico." He listened closely to what the girl on the phone had to say, then furrowed his brow. "Yeah, I'm with Mexico. It's nice, it's pretty nice." There was an audible huff over the phone and a couple of people turned to look at him.
Meanwhile back at the table Mexico, who had been incredibly contented until now, was beginning to feel tiny pangs of jealousy stabbing at her heart like tiny ants holding machetes were crawling over her.
Jeikeh was having a rather long conversation, during which Mexico eyed him carefully and suspiciously, but decided not to kick up a fuss. She would drop a passing comment when he came back, but saying any more than that might ruin her chances with her precious baby forever.
Eventually she watched him nod twice, then pull the phone away from his ear, shrugging slightly as he shoved it back into his pocket, plodding back over to the table.
"Hey, Mex." Jeikeh said, sliding smoothly back into his seat (which meant almost tripping on the seat leg). "Sorry for leaving."
"It's okay, who was it?"
"Uh, just a friend."
"Mhm." Mexico replied, conspicuously stirring her Coke with a straw, eyeing him suspiciously. He didn't look like he was lying, but then again he always looked the same - piercing and haunting blue eyes staring out from underneath curtains of luxuriant, straggly blond surfer hair, tanned complexion (but orange neck and wrists) and the faintest blonde, spidery moustache which made him look like a prepubescent lemur.
She couldn't possibly ever be angry at someone as hot and intelligent as him. She watched as he took a huge bite out of his burger then grinned up at her, a piece of lettuce falling out of his mouth as he tried to speak.
He seemed to have forgotten he was eating, and almost choked. Once recovered, though, he hastily told Mexico that he loved her necklace and he thought she looked very beautiful tonight.
Again, she received the comments with a smile almost as wide as Hillary Clinton's after finding out about Trump's grab em 2005 tapes.
"Thanks, Jeikeh. I like how you did your hair today." She told him in response, even though it looked just like it had yesterday and the day before, and pretty much the past two years. Before that he used to wear a bowl cut, which had always attracted Mexico intensely. Perhaps she could get him to cut it like that again.
"I finished our notes for the lab report." He continued.
Mexico leant forward - here he was, a man showing off his pure intelligence. "What was the conclusion?"
He narrowed his eyes as he thought, his face screwed up in concentration. "Plants breathe too!" He announced proudly a solid two minutes later.
"Do they really?" She asked, even though they'd learnt that in class six years ago and they lived off the oxygen plants produced through respiration. Mexico waved a hand dismissively. "Thanks for finishing it, anyway."
Jeikeh took the last bite of his burger and got up to pay the bill. He paid mostly in one dollar and five dollar bills, leaving the cashier with such a huge pile of notes that the poor soul could barely put them away. Such a gentleman, Mexico thought to herself. "It's no problem." He told her upon return. "Thank you for the awesome time."
