Chapter one: The Beginning
It was pouring hard at six in the morning. I couldn't sleep any more so I got up and got dressed. I wore a white shirt with holes on the side of it. I wore medium dark blue jeans with a bit of rips. I put on a white gap sweater. I brushed my long brown hair and left it down. I get a snap from John, streaks. I reply to him and leave it at that. We only had one conversation, but I knew he wasn't interested in talking to me. So we only send streaks to each other. I put on some tunes quietly while I finish getting ready. I wash my face and brush my teeth.
It's still early in the morning, so I stay in my room until it's closer to the time I get up. I finished some homework that I didn't do last night. I had to finish up the map of China. Luckily, I only have to colour it. I could still hear the rain banging on my window as I was trying to work. Eventually, I got it done. I packed it in my bag and went to read until my alarm went off.
I headed up stairs to pack my lunch and eat some breakfast. They were watching Everybody Loves Raymond. Nobody noticed me. "Hi Emma." responds Kaitlyn. She has brown hair and is the youngest of my siblings, wearing an Avalor shirt and skirt to school. I grabbed the food for my lunch, and made myself some eggs on toast. "Good morning."
"Morning Mom." My mom is 5.5 feet tall. She has short brown hair. She wore her Oilers hoodie. She was wearing dark jeans too. By the time I was finished, it was time to go so I said to my brother, "bye Brandon." He gets up and gets ready to go. He wears his grey heavy sweater, blue jeans and a white T-shirt underneath. We headed out the door to walk to school. We walk silent until one of us thinks of something to say. "Dodo dodo dodododo dodododo." Brandon says. He's singing the Pink Panther song. I join in until we get to the hill. We walk up it slowly. We kept glancing back to see if Braydon Hackett would be coming. He's changed a lot. His personality and he swears and listens to songs that swears.
He's not coming. Good. We walk past the lights, to head on the sidewalk beside the school. We met up with Miley on the way. She's a bit taller than me, has blonde short hair, wearing a light purple jacket with joggers pants. Once we were at school, we went our separate ways. I went to my doors while the other two went to see their friends. I walked alone, silently. Once I got to my door, they were locked, so I knocked and yanked on the doors so someone would let me in. The boys were attacking each other once I got in. I walked past them like I wasn't here. Jessie was getting her things ready for the day. I smoothly went to my locker and got my things ready for the day. I grabbed my math and science binder, my chromebook, book and pencil case. "Hello, Emma."
"Hi." Jessie and I always chat in the morning and sometimes go walking around the school before the first bell rings.
She was a bit shorter than me, but not much. Probably about an inch or two shorter. She wore her black leather jacket with ripped jeans. Her hair was really long and at the end of it was blonde. Also, she has pale skin. We went for a walk, and talked until the bell rang.
It was class time and we were reading for the morning. For once, everyone was silent. We read for about fifteen minutes. It was a Thursday, which means it's a day four and we have gym, which means partner dancing. That's fun. "Put your books away and take out your math, homework check." says Mrs. Benson. We did and she went around checking who did their homework and who did not. She finally came around to me and she checked it off saying I did my homework. My class is rowdy and when we're about to do an activity that includes helping each other, it's not going to work out.
The time came to where we had to do that activity. It was almost like an escape room, but we had to solve the puzzles to get out of the school. I thought we'd get along very well, but I was wrong. So very wrong.
We got in the fishbowl room and had to solve problems. Everyone was looking for clues to get out of here. "Can anyone help me." Zoe Asked. "I'll come help you. What do you need help with?" I say. "We need to find out what this means."
I found a piece of paper that had writing on it. "Hey look at this. Do you think it means something?" I ask. "I think so. What does it say?"
"It says... find The kEy in the drawer. Numbers are inside the basket." Zoe Looked confused. "Find the basket. quick go go go." We found the basket and looked all over for the numbers. We brought it back to where we were and scanned the page. Then I realized that some of the letters are capitalized. "Look, three of the letters are capitalized. T, E, and N. Ten."
She gasped. "That might be one of the answers to the locks. We went over to the locks and tried it. It worked! We unlocked it. Only five more to go. Zoe And I continued working on the puzzle while we could hear the others arguing. "Guys stop." Zoe And I say. We tried to get their attention. "I know how to get their attention. In our musical theater dance, the part where Tessa goes on and screams, "everybody quiet."
"Yes. But what does that have to do with anything."
"We could yell that to get everyone's attention before someone dies."
"Good on a count of three. One... two... three."
"EVERYBODY QUIET!" we both yell in unison. We got everyone's attention. "Now, if we want to get out of here, we've got to work together without yelling. What if we were in a dimension where we couldn't get out unless we had to solve puzzles and get keys to get out. And no one else was around but us." Zoe Exclaimed. "We can't fight." I say. I feel like an idiot. We stayed silent for a bit, then went back to work. "Does anyone smell that?" Sophia asked. "I smell it." I say
"Same here." John said. "That's an awful smell." Flinn said. I look at the ceiling. This smoke came down and spread through the room. It came down slowly. "Guys." No one answered. "Guys." I say a little louder. Again no one answered. "Guys." I'm yelling now. "What?" John and Dean say, their tone mad. "The ceiling."
"Yeah what about it?" John said, putting his hands on his hips. "The ceiling. Look up." They did and they were freaking out. "Everybody. There's smoke coming from the ceiling."
"What?" Everyone looked at the ceiling and started freaking out. Everyone starts banging on the door. "LET US OUT!" We all cry, banging at the door. "Everyone backup." John directed. He ran up to the door and tried to knock it down with his shoulder. "We're all going to die!" Omar cried. "I hope you do." I say. I really hated him. The smoke spread through the whole room and seconds later, we were out like a light.
My eyes were opening slowly. My vision was really blurry to the point where I couldn't see. I woke up in the class, on top of John. I immediately get up and move away as fast as I can, before he notices. I move away and realize that I'm the only one awake. I can't remember what happened. My memory was foggy. Why would I get put on top of John. My head was pounding real bad. I had to sit down. Better yet, I went to grab some water. I came back and I saw John getting up very slowly. "Do you know what happened?" I asked quietly. "No, do you?"
"No not really."
"My head hurts."
"Same here."
He sat up and leaned back against the couch, holding his head with one hand. "Are you ok?"
"No"
I left him alone after that. We stayed in class as everyone was slowly getting up. "Does anyone know what happened." I say, hoping someone would give me an answer. "No," they all say. I went to go out to grab a drink and the door was locked from the outside. "Dammit. We're trapped." I leaned against the whiteboard and slid down to sit. "How are we going to get out now." Jessie said. "Get a chair and break the glass." I suggest. "Alright." John said, picking up a chair and ready to throw it at the table. I ran and grabbed the leg of the chair before he threw it. "I didn't mean it, John." He put down the chair. More like chucking it at Flinn, who was standing two feet away. He ran across the class to get to somewhere safe.
Mrs. Benson came in to let us know that we're free to go home now. I left immediately. I wonder how long we've been out. Not even to the sidewalk off of school grounds, I heard the bells ring, time to go home. Something didn't feel right. Was it just me, or did everyone act weird? Most of the side effects from the smoke. Brandon came out and we started to walk home. The people how they drove, it was kind of weird. I don't know how to explain it though. It was like some were driving fast and they would fade, if they were going really slow or just slow, they would also fade away. Or start. "Brandon, do you see the cars fading?"
"What, no. They're just driving normally. See? You blind?"
"They're fading alright." We just kept walking. We were at the lights and the same with the lights. Everytime it changed to red, yellow, green, walk, no walk, it always faded. I was starting to freak out. I didn't want to panic in front of my brother because he would say it's fine and I'll be freaking him out. We made it home and I was freaking out. The whole family was fading away. "Hey, how was school?"
"Good." I say, staring at her in a weird way. "Good." Brandon said.
I put my things away and headed downstairs. I checked my phone for any notifications. Nothing. I texted Jessie to see if she sees people fading.
Have you noticed anything about the people fading?
Yes, have you?
Yes or I wouldn't be asking you.
The conversation ended after that. Dinner came along and I went up and ate. It smelled so good, I ran up. We ate bbq chicken with greek salad and garlic bread. I finished and went back downstairs to rest. I played on my phone for awhile, watching youtube and playing games. I got a snap from John. Streaks. I opened it and it turned out it was streaks, and he texted something. It says, is it just me, or did that smoke do something because every person seems like they're fading.
I send streaks to him and also saying this, "no, it's not just you". I texted Jessie and she's seeing people fading and the same with me.
We were now texting. This was the first conversation that we had in a long time.
It's not just me then.
No. When I walked home, the people were fading away, same with my family. It was weird.
Hope tomorrow will be better than today.
Hope so too.
That was it for our conversation. Didn't last for very long. But saved it to look back on. It was time for me to have a shower so I brushed my hair, turned on the hot water, undressed myself and hopped in. I let the hot water run down me. I grabbed the shaver and shaved my legs and armpits, then grabbed the shampoo and washed my hair. Once that was washed out, I washed my body with body wash. I then used a conditioner to smooth out my hair when I brush it. When I was done, I turned off the water and got out. I wrapped the towel around me and my hair. I came out of the bathroom and got dressed into my pajamas. I then went out of my room to watch some tv. I pulled back the chair and turned on youtube. There was nothing on so I decided to go to bed.
When I woke up by my alarm, I got up and got ready. Usually I would hear the kids from down here, but it was silent. My alarm clock probably didn't work. Everything seemed to be normal, nothing faded or anything. I did what I did to get ready. I went upstairs when I was done, and no one was here. "Mom?" I yelled. No answer. "Mom!" Again no answer. I went upstairs to check her room. She wasn't in her bed. I checked the kids room. No one. "Guys, this isn't funny if you're trying to scare me." I shout so they can hear.
I couldn't find anyone. I checked the front yard and backyard. No one to be seen. "Hello guys!" I start to shout. No one's here. I grab my phone and start calling everyone on my contacts. No one answered. All I had left was John's number. I was scared to call him. He doesn't usually like to talk to me, just sending streaks. I was nervous, but the only way to find out what's going on, I had to call him. I pressed the call on it. "I don't think this is a good idea." I say to myself. I was about to hang up when he answered. "Hello." I had to answer. "Um. Hello."
"Hi, do you want something?"
"N-no, it's just... I'm glad to hear someone's voice. I couldn't find any of my family members."
"Neither can I. I've been waiting for the bus for twenty minutes and it still hasn't come. I'm starting to think that the buses have stopped working, or no one's here at all." Then I think back to what Zoey Said. "You remember what Zoey said, right?"
"No."
"She said this when you people were fighting. 'What if we were in a world where it was just us and no one around. We have solve puzzles to get out of this world.'"
"Yeah so."
"So what I'm saying is, what if it's that world? Where we had to solve puzzles to get out of here."
"Right, Emma. It's not real. Our families must've gone out and didn't tell us, or did and left a note somewhere. Tell you what, meet me outside our class and we'll talk, ok?"
"Yeah... ok."
I hung up and left. I grabbed something to eat on my way out. I'll just eat on the way. Once I got to the lights, there were no cars passing by. Absolutely none. Although the lights were working. I don't normally cross the road without the little man telling me to. I looked all ways possible, finished my food and booked it to the other side. Ran right across, didn't go to the platforms on each corner. I walked for the rest of the way. I was on school grounds and went to the front entrance. I grabbed a drink of water before I headed my way. I walked down the long hallway to get to the class. It felt awkward to not see any teachers or students here.
I made it to the class, which was unlocked. I went in and everything was like it was yesterday, except the floor is nice and tidy, and nothing on the back counter. The tables are in the rows like they should be, and two chairs at each table, stacked. Also, the whiteboard is nice and clean. It's so clean that it looked like nothing was written on it. I went back outside the class and I waited for John to come. I may not know where he lives, but I do know that it's far away from this school.
Once he's here, I will know why we are alone in this world.
