Chapter 14: Secrets

Sky's POV

The storage room looked like a tornado hit it. Chests were overturned with broken or shattered items spilling out of it. Burn and blast marks lined the walls and shelves as the room stank of broken potions and ingredients. Weapons and armour lay scattered on the floor, dented and broken.

Seto frowned as he tried to focus on the destruction of the room, his hands glowed purple as he tried to make repair the room and it's items. But stopped after a while as none of the items moved or even grew incase in the sorcerer's magic. "This is enchanted... I can't repair it..." Seto muttered, rubbing his hands.

Ian blinked as he picked up half of a broken ender pearl "How did this even happen?!" He muttered in disbelief "This floor is guarded day and night."

"It had to be the squids right?" Jerome asked "I mean, who else would come and attack this place?"

"That's likely..." Jason agreed with a frown "But why? If the squids had access to this floor why is it only this room's been ransacked? I mean, does anything even look like it's been taken?"

"Well with the room destroyed like this we'd never know." Husky muttered as he picked up a broken bottle that used to hold a healing potion "Of course it may not be the squids at all. They may be at war with us but they aren't smart enough to know how to sneak into our own base to do this. My guess is that this was an inside job."

Everyone frowned at that. No one liked the idea of a traitor in our midst. But it might explain why Hero was acting so odd to me. Watch your back... Is this really what he meant?

"Now hold on." Mitch said "Ok, yes, an inside job would make sense since guards wouldn't be suspicious and there'd have easy access to the room. But again, what the nether was the point of it? I don't know about you guys but if I were a traitor I wouldn't be going and destroying a bunch of items. That's just pointless."

"Not necessarily..." Seto said as he picked up a cracked eye of Ender and blew soot off it "I don't think any of you realised yet but this is one of our main storage rooms... Some of these potions are vital and take forever to make, not to mention how hard some of the ingredients are to come by."

My eyes widened at the conclusion Seto was coming to "So now we're down on supplies..."

"Well it can't be too hard to remark some of this stuff." Jerome shrugged "I mean yes the potions and ingredients are low but we can make armour and swords virtually in our sleep."

"But some stuff requires us to go hunt mobs. I mean we were already short on End items after our recent trip. We'll have barely anything now..." Husky sighed

Jason's eyes widened softly at that "That must be part of the reason!"

"Jason, what are you talking about?" I asked with a frown.

Jason looked over at Seto "We're trying to find a way to get to the heart right? Wouldn't we need ingredients from the end to get there? I mean it takes forever to get to the end in general and it's even harder to find a portal. If eyes of Ender are needed to get to the End. Won't they be needed to get to the heart?"

Seto didn't reply, looking away and down at the broken eye in his hands.

Everyone was silent at that thought, the only person to break it was Mitch with "So someone doesn't want us to get to Ty in time."

"No." Seto said as he looked up with a determined frown "That won't happen... If I can't find a way to the heart in the library. I have other methods I can try..."

"Seto..." Ian began warily "No... Not the archives. Not again."

"The library and the archives are my responsibility to look after Ian." Seto replied as he tossed the eye of Ender down into the box "And the journals down there are my responsibility as well. I can look at them when I please."

"Seto you said so yourself. Those journals are evil." Mitch frowned worriedly "Look at what they did to your grandfather. Hell, look at what they did to you!" He demanded, grabbing one of his hands to show the hourglass rune on it.

I'd heard plenty about what had happened in the library of Herobrine's castle while as I was fighting Ty and Jason. Mitch and Jerome told the three of us about it one night after we'd asked Seto about the runes on his arms and he'd warned us to drop it. Bella had also told us a bit more about how Seto kept Dominic's journals down there. That really worried me... Especially when I thought too much on it.

My memories as Skybrine often came and went. Certain.. bloody events I could remember as clear as day. Other less chaotic moments felt almost fuzzy, like a dream. But I remembered Seto's grandfather very well.

Not by appearance so much. I mean, he kinda reminded me of an older Seto. With pale skin and longish wavy brown hair. But his eyes... A piercing red that never stopped changing shades as they pulsed with magic. They were filled with chaos and evil. He just had an aura around him that screamed 'dangerous'.

Whatever dark magic he possessed, not even Skybrine wanted anything to do with it.

I'd only seen the runes on Seto's arms once and that was just after the battle. He kept them hidden under his sleeves and just preferred it if we didn't bring it up. It put Seto in a bad mood for the rest of the day and I really don't think it helped that he slept near the entrance to the archives.

Seto glared at that as he forced his hand free and pulled down his sleeves to hide the runes "They are nothing but inking on my arms Mitch." He snapped "And I asked you to drop it!"

Mitch frowned "Seto you know it's dangerous down there. You forbade anyone from going down there after the battle. That applies to you too."

Seto finally gave in at that with an irritated sigh "I know that. But I see no other option."

"Can we at least wait until we are certain the library has nothing?" I asked "Seto. I don't like the idea of you going down there. I want the key to the archives. Now."

"I don't have them." Seto said folding his arms "I gave them to Bella."

Husky frowned "Why would you do that?"

"Not important." Seto said with a wave of his hand "I'm going back to research." He muttered finally, turning and leaving.

The room was quiet again for a minute before Jason shook his head "He's so much angrier now... And stressed out."

"Dude. If you saw what Seto was put through by his grandfather. You'd be too." Jerome muttered as Mitch went to go find Bella.

"He looks exhausted." Husky muttered "But we can't stop him. He never was one for sleep anyway."

I sighed "Look. We can't do anything about Seto. But we can about this whole situation. Jerome. Go get Mitch and just send Bella over here. You and Mitch are incanted of setting up recruits to go get supplies. Craft, hunt mobs, find dungeons or mineshafts, farm, if it's an item that's easily accessible and in the Overworld, try to get it. But stay out of the End and Nether. Got it?"

Jerome nodded "On it." He said as he left the room.

I turned to look at Ian and Quentin "Ian, I want you to work with the other generals and recruits to count up how many supplies we do have and ration them. Set some recruits to work with the supplies we do have to craft weapons and armour, heck melt down to broken armour and weapons to make more."

Ian nodded mutely.

"Quentin, you work with Ian and make sure other important recruits like the doctors and cooks know that for now we are working on a shorter supply system. Only use potions and ingredients when so when injuries are serious and stick to simple foods. Ok?"

Quentin nodded "I hope you know what your doing Sky. Don't forget you still need to train your powers."

I nodded to him as they left. Now it was just Jason and I in the room.

"Adam what do you need for me to do?" Jason frowned.

"Jason. You are one of the easiest to talk to here." I sighed "It's no secret the recruits are worried. My powers, Ty's disappearance and now this. The recruits need answers Jason. We need to give them that. But in a way so we don't cause mass hysteria."

"Adam are you sure about this?" Jason asked me worriedly "I mean, wouldn't you be better suited to this?"

I shook my head "No. Jason you're a voice of reason. People trust you and your judgement. People can follow my orders but after this whole... incident with Skybrine and now my powers, I feel like the recruits are afraid to challenge me. Whether or not they want to admit it to me or themselves, they're afraid of me."

"Adam I'm a hybrid too! They'd be afraid of me too!"

"Did you end up killing hundreds of people?" I demanded.

Jason looked away at that "Don't use that as a point Adam." He mumbled "But... Adam there's..."

I frowned "What's wrong Jason?"

Jason bit his lip and sighed "I could try and help you train. I mean it may be easier as a hybrid and all."

He was lying... Jason was a horrible liar. But I knew he wouldn't say anything so I sighed "Thank you Jason. Really." I told him

Jason nodded sadly at that as he left the room.

I sighed and silently began to explore the room for clues. We need answers, we need Ty.

"Hello?" Bella's voice soon rang out a few minutes later as she opened the door to the storage room "Adam?"

"I'm back here Bella." I called out from near the back behind one of the shelves that used to store potions of fire resistance and water breathing "Close the door behind you."

Bella nodded as she did so and stared at the tarnished room "Oh my... What on earth happened here?!"

"Long story." I sighed as she came over to me "I'm trying to figure out who did this now. Do you have the archives key?"

Bella nodded as she pulled out an old brass key from her shorts back pocket and handed it to me. "Here. Why do you need it?"

"Well I don't really need it. More so I'm just keeping it away from Seto." I told her.

Bella blinked at that and sighed "Of course you are..."

"Why do you say that?" I asked her with a frown as I continued to examine the shelves.

"I made him give me them ages ago after I caught him coming out of the archives one morning." She confessed.

I paused and looked over at her "You what?! What didn't you say anything?!"

"He begged me not to. I said I would only if I took the keys from him. I doubt it worked though. He is a sorcerer after all."

"... I'd forgotten about that." I muttered with a sigh as I ran my hand over a blast mark. There was something about this that I wasn't seeing...

'Try your magic...' Herobrine's voice suddenly cut in.

'Shut up.' I thought back.

'You know a spell. Didn't the sorcerer teach you one? Limbo vision?'

'... Why are you helping me?'

'I told you. Not helping. Moral support. Now for nether's sake Adam just do it!'

"Adam?" Bella frowned "Are you alright?"

I grit my teeth and slowly nodded "I'm fine... Just seeing if I can try something."

"... I should step back shouldn't I?"

"If you want... It's not a dangerous spell. I mean, I've done it before.."

Bella decided to not take the risk and took a step back.

Limbo vision was a spell Seto defined as a way to see into Limbo, the realm the lies through all the other worlds. The realm between life and death. It's meant to let you see the remnants of magic, mobs and spirits. The only danger it really held was to the user if they couldn't break out of it. Some people can go mad from it so Seto doesn't like me trying it alone. But Seto wasn't here and it couldn't be that bad it was probably one of the only spells I was good at.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, muttering the incantation Seto had taught me. When I'd opened my eyes I couldn't help but smile. The world looked as if it'd completely changed to and greyish palette.

Limbo looked much like the Overworld, only it looked as if it had switched to grey and become slightly buried at the does on some objects.

Of course my smile soon faded to a frown as I looked at the blast marks. Small dark red runes could be seen slowly fading on the blackened marks.

"Bella, I need a pen." I said awhile pulling off one of my gloves.

"Uh... Excuse me?"

"Bella please. Pen now!"

"Ok ok. Jeez." Bella muttered as she searched her pockets and the room to eventually find a marker. "Here, there's no pens here."

"Close enough." I said as I grabbed the marker and pulled off the cap with my teeth and copied the runes onto my hand.

Once I was done I closed my eyes and repeated the incantation I'd said before so that once I'd opened my eyes, the world was once again colourful.

Bella's eyes widened at the drawn runes "Did you see those on the walls?" She demanded

"Yeah... Do you recognise them?" I asked with a frown as I showed my hand to her.

Bella frowned as she looked the runes over and slowly shook her head "No... They... Look familiar is all." She replied, tugging at her hair.

Something told me she was lying as well. Why was everyone keeping secrets? Then again, was I any different?

"Right..." I sighed "Just... Don't mention this to anyone. Ok?"

Bella was was quiet as she nodded softly "Ok..."

Once Bella was gone, I took a deep breath as I leaned against the wall, trying to process this crazy situation.

How can we be expected to work together and save Ty when we can't even trust each other?
