5. Sirens?
Once they were on the street, Mahira broke the silence, "so when were you going to tell me about Aidan?"
Mayur choked.
He looked at his sister with wide eyes and a shock much more than the time he'd found her in the frozen room after the first snap. "Aidan?" His voice was barely audible. He felt like he would throw up any moment. "How do you-" he couldn't form the words no matter how hard he tried.
"Mayur," Mahira started, "I don't know if you really like him or if you're just using him to get with Zach." She drove towards the edge of the road and pushed the breaks. "But I've seen the way he talks about you. He loves you, Mayur." She moved her gaze towards his face while he kept looking straight ahead, "Don't break his heart."
He felt like crying, his voice stuck in his throat and his eyes threatening to she'd a tear anytime. "I-" he took a deep breath and let the tear fall. "It's not like I'm using him. I didn't go to him; he came to me. He asked me if I'd like to go out with him." He exhaled, turning his face towards Mahira, who was already looking at him. "It was June, when he first came to me. He's in our Chemistry class. I know him for years, so when he asked me out, it was a shock. I never thought he'd be into guys; I... fuck it, everyone in the class thought him to be straight. So, when he asked me out, I thought it was a joke. But he kept trying to convince me for almost a week and then one day, he asked me the same in front of Zach.
"So, I uh I agreed, because I didn't believe it and I thought that the moment I'd say yes, he'll yell 'YOU'RE PRANKED!' because that's how it's been since I came out. They're always joking and teasing and all that stuff. But he was sincere. And when we went on a date, I couldn't find a single flaw in him. No matter how hard I tried to. And things escalated from there, we had started dating by our birthday. I didn't tell you because, I wasn't sure how you'll react because I still like Zach. There's nothing in this world that would stop me from waiting for Zach.
"But Aiden, he's an angel. He deserves the world. He deserves all the love in it. He deserves everything good and nothing bad. I—" Mayur's words were cut off by the loud blare of sirens. Mahira's gentle expression shifted to one of concern as she quickly turned toward the noise, and Mayur's eyes widened in shock. He pulled out his phone and hastily dialed Zach's number. A tense silence fell before the call connected.
"Zach, did anyone see you with them?" Mahira glanced back at the boy as he posed the question. There were no pleasantries exchanged, just a direct inquiry delivered in a no-nonsense tone. Mahira could discern faint noises from the other end but couldn't decipher the words. "Don't hide them! Move them back to their original place; we'll be there in five." This time, a shout from the other side reached Mahira's ears. Mayur remained silent for a while before he finally murmured, "Okay."
After he hung up, he glanced back at Mahira and said, "let's go home." With a nod, Mahira started the engine. She was too frightened to ask anything, too bewildered to make a comment. Shortly thereafter, the car was parked in its usual spot, and the twins stepped out. They hadn't spoken a word to each other since the car started, and Mahira was relieved to maintain the silence.
Mayur unlocked the main door with his key and entered, while Mahira remained outside. She was deeply disturbed by the recent events. The reality that she had taken the lives of four people was beginning to sink in. She sat silently on the car's hood, uncertain of the time that passed, until Mayur returned. Without speaking, she gave him a look of concern filled with unspoken questions.
"Zach called," he said. "It seems they're inquiring all the guests," he sighed, "hand me the keys."
"What? No, you don't have a license! You can't drive properly," she protested, stepping down from the hood of the car. "I'll drive, as usual." She moved towards the door but was stopped by Mayur's firm grip on her hand.
"You're not coming with me, Irah. You're not going back there," he stated firmly, taking the keys from her grasp. "Don't follow me." With those final words, he opened the door, settled into the seat, and drove away, leaving Mahira standing alone.
She felt weak in her knees, she felt like falling down and crying. So that's what she did. She let herself fall on the ground and she let the tears flow. In past five years, a lot has changed in her life. She'd discovered a part of herself that changed her forever, something that's never going to leave her. She sat there, sobbing quietly for a long time. All the things that'd happened in past five years, flashing in front of her.
The blip, the powers, the orphanage, the bullies, Zach and now another chapter of Aiden was disclosed to her. She cried, thinking how their parents knew none of that, how just this morning her mother had asked Mayur if he made a girlfriend yet or how her father was worried about letting them go alone. She wanted to laugh at the irony, but she'd just told them that Mayur was an idiot and wasn't getting a girl ever, and that they'll be fine alone. They'd spent five years of their adolescence all alone, so how hard a Halloween party could be?
She wanted to tell them all the things. She wanted to scream to the world. But all she could do was sit there, sobbing quietly.
Time passed and Mayur was back from the inquiry. He found her, sitting outside and crying and kneeled down to her. He embraced her softly, wrapping his arms around her and letting her cry. He helped her stand up and dropped her on her bad, rubbing her shoulder softly as he did so. He stayed by her side untill he was sure that she was asleep. He covered her with a blanket as her body had turned completely cold. Mayur knew it wasn't going to help, but he did it anyways.
With one last glance on her forehead, he left to his room and lied on his bed. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep but sleep seemed to have lost its way to him. His mind drifted again and again to what they'd discussed in the car. He couldn't stop thinking about Aiden and Zach. He knew it wasn't right, he shouldn't be having feelings for Zach when he's in a relationship with Aiden but he couldn't help it.
He knew he had to do something, he had to tell him all about it. No matter how hard it was. Aiden was a great guy, he was an angel, Mayur knew that, but he wasn't in love with him. No matter how much he made him feel. Mayur didn't love Aiden, he loved Zach.
