Chapter 8

"Um… Daichi?"

"What's wrong?"

Asahi sighed. He looked across the gym at their fellow first year worriedly. "There's something wrong with Suga."

"What? Why?"

"Look." Asahi stated.

He motioned to Sugawara, who was sitting on the bench, clutching his waist, bending in what seemed to be pain. Daichi immediately handed the ball he was holding to another teammate and rushed over. Asahi trailed behind, worried. "Suga?"

"Hm?"

"Are you okay? What hurts?"

"I'm fine Dai. Just a little stomach ache." Sugawara smiled warmly at Daichi. "That's all."

"I can ask coach if he can give you some pain meds or something."

"I'm fine, really." Sugawara stood and smiled. "Come on, let's play."

"Um…" Daichi tried to read Sugawara. It was harder than he thought. "Okay. Just be careful."

"Of course!" Sugawara rushed over to the rest of the team, smiling. He seemed to snap out of his trance of being in pain. Daichi sighed.

"Hey Asahi?"

"Yes?"

"Can you keep an eye on him with me? There's something off."

"Of course. I think I can catch him if something really bad happens." Asahi rubbed the back of his neck again. "Pay attention to his eyes more often if you get confused."

"Confused?"

"Yeah. Like not being able to read him." Asahi walked to the others slowly and started talking.

Daichi sighed and followed him, his worry still very apparent.

The coach yelled out for everyone to line up for drills and had Sugawara setting for the second half, the only other setter for the first half. Everyone kept having to speed up and the temperature in the gym started to rise gradually.

Daichi eyed Sugawara and furrowed his brows. The heat seemed to be getting to everyone but Sugawara kept blinking and flinching when the coach would yell out.

And then it happened.

Luckily, Asahi was towards the front of the line and caught Sugawara as he collapsed, crying out and shaking. Ukai dropped down from his spot behind the net, hurrying down beside the two boys. Daichi hurried to the front of the line and bent down.

"Suga? Suga what's happening? What's wrong?"

"M-my head!"

"Your head?" Ukai questioned. Sugawara nodded, crying loudly. Ukai sighed and motioned for someone to come closer. "Get me a wet cloth."

The teammate ran off. Sugawara covered his ears, shaking and crying loudly. His eyes were shut tight, shaky breaths emitting from his mouth. Daichi and Asahi both shared a scared glance.

The teammate returned with the wet cloth and handed it to Ukai. He pressed it to the shaking male's forehead and tried to calm him down. Not the best thing for a man like him to do.

Daichi held him, stroking his hair and making soft shushing noises. "Suga, what's wrong?"

"I-It's bright… and I-loud…" Sugawara cried louder and kept shaking.

"We need to get him to a hospital if he's like this." Someone said quickly. Ukai nodded.

"Someone call an ambulance and hand me the phone."

The phonecall was short, as paramedics quickly had arrived and taken Sugawara away.

Daichi looked over to Asahi and sighed. "My mom's car?"

"Yep."

"Alright." Everyone headed to the club room and changed. Asahi and Daichi both walked to their own houses, explaining to their parents what had happened. They climbed into Daichi's mother's car, his father driving. Daichi had a bag, knowing he'd stay the night out of pure worry.

Asahi was well, sheltered so he knew he wouldn't be able to stay the night despite wanting to. Daichi's mother didn't mind, knowing her son wouldn't dare do anything. He knew what happened when she got angry. And that was lectures. Because she knew that he hated them and was easy to forgive. Not the best tactic but Daichi learned.

When they pulled into the hospital parking lot, he was the first to reach the desk. "Excuse me, what room is Sugawara Koushi in?"

The nurse typed the name into her computer. "Mm. Room 278."

"Thank you very much." Daichi smiled. "Um… what floor?"

"Fifth floor."

"Thank you!" Daichi rushed to the elevator, the others behind him. He anxiously rocked on the balls of his feet. Asahi noticed this and put his hand on Daichi's arm.

"Daichi… you're making me a little nervous." He whispered.

"Ah sorry." Daichi stopped. His mother put a hand on both of their shoulders and sighed.

"He's alright. Bad headaches are probably migraines. Bad for a fourteen year old but I'm sure they are taking good care of him."

"Strangely reassuring." Daichi's father mumbled.

She turned and glared at him. "Oh come on. They're kids."

"I'm joking."

"Bad joke."

"Bad attitude."

She sighed and shook her head. "In other words, he's fine."

"Thanks mom." Daichi mumbled. Asahi nodded, holding a book to his chest. The doors opened and he sighed. "Alright let's go."

He led the others down two hallways, not necessarily enjoying the sanitized air too much. Plus it was chilly. He found the room he wanted to go into and knocked on the door gently. Someone pried the door open and stared at him. Dark hair and dark eyes.

"Oh hi Gin. Is-" The door slammed. A lady inside started to scold in a whisper yell and Daichi chuckled. "That's Suga's mom. She'll open the door."

Just as he'd said, she opened the door and smiled. "Sorry about that. Come on in."

Daichi nodded and walked in. He headed to the bed and peered at Sugawara. The boy wasn't asleep, but his half lidded eyes didn't go to Daichi. He seemed dazed. "Suga?"

Asahi stood awkwardly behind Daichi, biting a nail. "Is he really okay?"

"He's fine. He's probably just acting." Gin stated, annoyed. Sugawara's mother nudged him.

"Be nice. He will be alright. The medicine they gave him is making him a little loopy right now. No need to worry." She smiled warmly at Asahi. He nodded, returning the smile. That eased his nerves a bit.

Sugawara whimpered softly and moved his head. Daichi bit his thumbnail, waiting. Loopy Sugawara hopefully wouldn't be bad. Sugawara groaned and tried to move his arm. He instantly stopped when the IV further dug into his skin. "What?"

"Suga."

"Mm?"

"Other side Suga." Sugawara turned his head and stared at Daichi, eyes glazed slightly. He smiled weakly and closed his eyes. "Pfft. You feeling alright now?"

"Mhmmm. No more ouch in my head." Sugawara whispered.

Daichi suppressed a laugh. "Oh really?"

"Mhm! Daichi rubbed my hair and then no more light. And now I'm here." Sugawara said, almost happy. It was funny at first but now Daichi was concerned. "Uh oh. Why are you sad?"

"Suga you passed out?"

"I'm sorry he's acting so strange. But he passed out as soon as they got him into the ambulance. They think it's because of how much pain he was in…" Suga's mother answered.

Sugawara yawned and closed his eyes. "Sleepy."

"Alright rest up sweetheart." She answered. She stood and kissed his forehead. Sugawara laughed, smiling tiredly.

"Do you mind if I…" Daichi gestured to the bed.

"Of course. Watch out for the IV though."

"Yes Ma'am." Daichi walked into the attached bathroom and slipped off his school clothes, into something a bit more comfortable. Daichi walked back into the room and sat on the side of the bed. Sugawara grabbed his hand and smiled. "Hey there."

"Mm. Hiiiii." Sugawara yawned. "Lay down. You're making me nervous."

"Sorry." Daichi laid next to Sugawara and allowed him to wrap around him as much as he wanted. That ended in Sugawara half way laying on Daichi, mumbling to himself. No one but him could pick up what he was saying.

Which was all shits and giggles until that loopiness got to Suga's head.
