Chapter 26

Adrian and Zara slept side by side in the same bed. Nothing happened, of course, because both of them had a lot more to know about each other. A lot of gates needed to be brought down before they could really be intimate with each other that way.

Zara woke up to bright sunlight through the window. There was an instant smile on her face when she felt Adrian's arms around her stomach. She turned her head around to look at him sleeping. She carefully turned around and stared at him for a few seconds. She traced the scar on his eyebrow with her finger, making him smile in his sleep.

Both of them were happy.

Until the next moment when her phone pinged.

The smile on Zara's face slowly disappeared as she forced herself to look at her phone that lay on the bedside counter. She looked back at Adrian and regret filled her. She could tell him the truth and delete what was on her phone if they were to take the next step.

But a curious mind is a dangerous one.

She got out of bed and pulled her phone from the charger. Her hands shook as she pressed the notification that said, "Transfer Complete" in red. She let out a breath through her mouth as she pressed it open.

Several files started to open up. Many of them were geographical and some were about empty apartments. But there was one particular file that caught her attention - the one with her name on it.

Adrian woke up to an empty bed. He wiped the sleep from his eyes and looked ahead of him at Zara, who stood at the centre of the room with her back to him. She was looking at her phone with the way her shoulders were drooping.

"Hey." He spoke, getting out of bed.

Zara turned around slowly, her eyes still fixated on the file she had just read. She looked up at him with red eyes. She had been crying. "Zara....what-"

"You knew." He noticed the familiar fonts and structure of a file on her phone as she showed the screen to him. "Zoya Ferrara?" She asked, her voice not having one shake in it. "That's who I am, isn't it?"

The colour drained from Adrian's face. She had been snooping around and had hacked his personal laptop. "Zara....I wanted to tell you but I had to-"

"What? Lie to me about who I am? Keep me safe?" She scoffed.

"Listen to me-"

"You knew!" She screamed, the phone almost slipping out of her hands. "You knew all along! I trusted you!" She shook her head. "I told you about my past....about....I told you everything about who I was despite you keeping me here! And you couldn't tell me the one thing that could have answered years of questions?"

"Zara, listen to me-" He moved closer to her but she walked backwards, her chest heaving with the pain that she was feeling.

"How could I have been so stupid? How could I ever have thought that I trusted you?"

She might as well have slapped him because he couldn't see her hurt this way and this was a hurt that he had caused. "It has been decades since the truth has been kept a secret. I've known only for a few months only. Marvin has been keeping the olden secrets to keep the peace between the cities. If I had told you, you would have laughed in my face. You tried to escape from here without knowing who you were. I had to keep-"

"Do not say you wanted to keep me safe. That cannot be done when you've been lying to me about everything!" Every conversation that they had shared was running in her head. "You were right when you told me that nobody could be with you because of this life. But the uncertainties that come with it are because of you."

She inhaled sharply as she walked past him towards the wardrobe where she had already packed her things. She swung the bag across her shoulder and came back to the room only to take her jacket, but was stopped by Adrian grabbing her forehand.

"Zara, listen to me-"

Zara's reflex clicked in. She pulled her licensed gun from her bag and pointed it at him, keeping her hand on the safety button. "Don't." She said. "Or I will shoot you." She had had enough of his lies and false promises. She needed to leave this place that was suffocating her.

Adrian did not blink twice. He walked closer to the trigger and held her hand on the gun, pointing it directly at his chest. "Do it." Her heart started to race faster. What was she doing? "But just know that I never lied to you. Everything I've told you....all that I said last night....it was all true."

"Don't...."

"Do it, Zara. I couldn't tell you. I had to make sure that you didn't know it yourself first-"

"For what? So that you could manipulate me into seeing your side of the story? Our parents killed each other. What is to say that we won't do the same thing to each other?"

"Do it then. Shoot me. But just know that I never lied about my feelings for you."

Zara couldn't have pulled the trigger no matter what she said. His grip on her arm was making her reconsider her decisions but that was who he was to her. She couldn't trust him anymore. She was way past that station.

She used the back of her gun and hit his temple and headbutted him to fall on the ground. She couldn't believe that he had let her do it but he had seemed so certain when he asked her to shoot him.

Zara walked into the closet and locked it from the inside so that Adrian would have no chance at escape. She walked out the doors of his room and locked it from outside using a hair pin and lockpicking tools that she always carried with her. Walking down the corridor, she almost passed by her own room without locking it from the outside. Once she was done with it, she knew she was only gaining a few minutes for herself.

She walked directly to the garage, grateful that no one had stopped her on her way. The mansion seemed emptier than it should have been, but she did not care. She looked at the different cars around and her heart wanted to take the bike. But her eyes fell on the black Jaguar that was the leader of Cardenas' favourite.

She quickly walked to the cupboard in the back and searched for the keys. Finding it was like finding gold among needles. She gripped it tightly as she opened the car and placed her bag inside. She heard footsteps coming from the house and ran towards the glass door that connected the garage to the house.

She immediately locked it and saw Adrian stand behind. "Zara!" She heard his muffled voice as he tried to open the door. He slammed his fist against it but she was not going to wait for it.

She looked at him once more, not caring about the blood dripping down his face. She wished she could trust him but she was not going to be here any longer. She walked back to the car and got inside. Gripping the steering wheel tightly, she drove away from the Cardenas mansion.

Away from the one she thought that she could love.
