Ch. 2

Virgil felt like he was going crazy.

He couldn't get that boy out of his head. Something about him had Virgil's heart doing backflips. He didn't believe in love at first sight, but he could feel it in his heart that the boy with the emerald eyes was a good person.

"Fuuuuck." He buried his face in his hands as he sat in his car. He was currently in the school parking lot, preparing to deal with the day.

This was completely ridiculous. He didn't even know the boy's name! Still, though, there was something about him that just made him stand out in the crowd. Would he be going to Virgil’s school? If so, should he shoot his shot?

What if that boy had heard one of the nasty rumors about Virgil? What then?

What if that boy wasn’t even into guys? The thought hadn’t even crossed his mind until then.

What if that boy wasn’t what Virgil thought he was? What if he was just like everyone else, taking whatever they want from him?

Well, Virgil would feel terribly embarrassed if any of those things happened. Virgil wanted someone to talk to, and for the first time in years, he felt like he finally had a chance to make a friend. Maybe even something more.

He flushed at his own thoughts. “Slow down, Virge.” He murmured, pinching the bride of his nose.

He had been thinking all this with the assumption that he would actually be able to work up the nerve to talk to him. What if he chickened out? Would he just end up alone forever?

Virgil sighed. “Enough pessimism.” He told himself. “Just get through the day. That’s enough.”

He climbed out of his car.

“Uh oh, everyone! Look out! His highness is coming!” Some random boy shouted in his direction, causing his friends to laugh. A few of them mockingly bowed.

Straight men just seemed to hate him, for some reason. Virgil thought it was internalized homophobia, but that was for another day.

Virgil pulled his hood up over his head, giving them the bird. Some laughed, while others just rolled their eyes. Virgil just huffed, walking a bit faster.

He hated it here. He truly, deeply, sincerely hated it.

When he walked through the doors, he went stiff.

There he was. The boy with the emerald eyes. Virgil furrowed his brow.

He was...

He was walking with Janus Orm of all people? Seriously?

Janus Orm hated Virgil’s guts. He always sent him dirty looks in the hallways, and Virgil didn’t even know why. He hadn’t done anything to him, as far as he was aware. It was like he thought Virgil was a bully. Which was ridiculous, since he barely talked at school.

The rest of Janus’ friend group seemed pretty cool. Logan Berry and Patton Libum both had his respect. Virgil was glad that the school had some good people, since the majority seemed to be freaks.

Virgil noticed for the first time that the boy with the green eyes had a twin brother. They were identical, but so different. The boy that originally caught Virgil’s attention wore bright colors, a toned body, and a sharp jawline. His twin brother wore darker clothing, and was fit, but not as fit as his brother. There was also a bit of a mustache forming on the brother’s face, which was paler.

Virgil forced himself to avert his gaze. Staring was weird, he knew that better than anyone.

Suddenly, a blonde girl was in his line of sight.

Oh, great.

“Hi, Pryder.” She smirked, shoving her phone in his face like it was a microphone. “How are you today?”

“Piss off, Susan.” Virgil growled, trying to walk past her.

Susan Wojcicki, the bane of his existence. She was absolutely in love with him, and made sure everyone knew it too. She wrote about how much of a heartthrob he was in the school newspaper, she left creepy notes in his locker, she even showed up at his house once. Virgil still wasn’t sure how she had gotten his address.

She blocked his path, frowning at him. “You saw the new kids, right? What do you think about that?” Susan asked. “Do you think those twins are going to shake up the lives of the students here at Vine Academy?”

Virgil pursed his lips, thinking about it. “...yeah.” Virgil nodded. “Yeah, I think things are about to change here at Vine Academy.” Virgil told her.

She hummed. “You actually answered me, shocker.” She put her phone in her pocket. “You never answered me about that date, though, Pryder.”

“Yes, I did.” Virgil huffed. “The answer is no.” He scowled, before shoving past her.

“You’ve never even given me a chance!” Susan exclaimed, chasing after him. “Why do you keep rejecting me?!”

“Because I know what you’re like.” Virgil scoffed, not even looking at her. “Don’t you have a class to go to? I wouldn’t want to ruin your perfect attendance record.”

“I don’t have a class right now, Pryder. Y’know, like I’ve been telling you every day.” Susan rolled her eyes. “And besides, I’m already ahead in all of my classes.”

“I really don’t care.” Virgil yawned. “Isn’t there someone else you could bother?”

“Lookin’ good, Virgil.” A girl that was walking past them giggled.

“Who the fuck is she?” Susan scowled.

“Hell if I know.” Virgil shrugged, shoving his hands into his hoodie’s pockets.

Susan examined him critically. "You're so ungrateful for the attention people give you. Anyone would kill to be as beautiful as you."

Virgil huffed. “Is there anything else you want, or are you just bothering me for shit’s and giggles?”

“Give me a chance, Pryder!” Susan whined, grabbing his arm. Virgil stopped walking, turning to face her. “I can make you happy! I’m not like everyone else! I’m different!”

“No, Susan.” Virgil spat, yanking his arm out of her grip. “What will it take for you to leave me alone?”

“One night.” Susan told him, stepping closer. “One night to show you how good I can be to you.”

Virgil grimaced. “You want me to sleep with you?” He scoffed. “The day I sleep with you is the day I’ve finally lost my mind.” He sneered, before turning around and continuing to walk.

"Asshole." He heard Susan grumble.
