Mary clung onto her baby Addison. "I'll always be with you," she said under her breath. Jacob put a gentle hand on her shoulder. "They must go," he said, casting sidelong glances across the lush green fields. Mary looked at Ivy, her twelve-year-old daughter. Ivy had long, straight hair as black as ash with tanned skin and amber eyes.

Mary cried, drawing a silver key from her pocket and placing it around Ivy's neck. "Take care!" Jack grasped Ivy's clammy hand in his own, preparing himself to jump into the iced-over lake. "Love you!" Jacob called to his children.
Jack was too nervous to answer his calls, and leaped into the lake, his hand still interlaced with Ivy's.
