CHAPTER NINE: CANADA
CARLISLE WAS A GENTLEMAN, BUT THE HOTEL DID NOT ACCOMODATE SUCH MEN.
Elise stood next to him, fiddling with her hands nervously as he calmly questioned the booking mishap.
Apparently, Alice had booked the reservation for him — he was called in late the night before after a car accident victim needed immediate surgery.
And Alice booked them a King Suite.
The honeymoon suite, to be precise.
And there was no availability for another bed.
They could either leave the hotel entirely and find somewhere else to stay (on a Friday night) or sleep in the room as booked.
"It's your decision, my darling," Carlisle looked down at her. "I don't intend to push you."
"It's fine," Iris shrugged. "Let's just — let's just go." She smiled down at the associate, taking the keys from him. "Thank you, have a great night."
The pair nervously walked to their room, Carlisle carrying her duffel bag and his suitcase. The hotel was very nice, probably the nicest place Elise had ever entered.
Low-hanging chandeliers, a lounge for members, a bar, polished floors, a doorman. They were offered a bellhop, but Carlisle declined.
The pair walked to their room on the top floor, leaving the large glass elevator, and down the hall to their room. Elise tapped the key against the door and opened it for Carlisle, who placed their bags near the door.
Entering, Elise's mouth fell open in surprise. To the right was an open door with a bathroom, but Elise's eyes caught the white sofa, soft blue carpet, and stairs leading to a large king's bed with a black headboard.
Leaving Carlisle's side, Elise walked to the windows and gasped at the view. A large lake, trees with pink blossoms, and busybodies walking back and forth in cars and on streets.
Carlisle smiled at her awe. "Alice did well, I think."
"Yeah, she did," Elise nodded. "This is amazing!"
Carlisle placed a hand on her waist softly, pressing a kiss to her to head. "Excited?"
"For a ghost tour, dinner, and kissing you?" Elise gushed. "Uh, yeah, I definitely am."
Carlisle chuckled, running his free down her cheek and gripping her chin with his pointer finger and thumb. "May I, Elise Swan?"
"If you don't, I think I'll scream," Elise grinned up at him.
Another chuckle left his mouth, and he pulled her lips to his, grazing hers softly.
Elise had been kissed before.
She'd had a serious boyfriend for an extended period of time — but this...
Elise moved her hand to his shirt and pulled him closer to her. He cupped her face delicately, minty and fresh. He tasted of warmth and sunshine but felt cold against her skin. He cooled the fire burning at his touch, and his lips caressed her own with a tenderness she'd never felt before.
He pulled back too soon, and Elise whimpered, pulling him closer again.
A chuckle sounded through from his mouth, and he hummed in response to her gasp, taking advantage of the breath and deepening the kiss. He held the back of her neck softly and tangled his fingers in her hair, before pulling back and pressing a soft kiss to her nose, then her forehead.
"Is that alright?"
"You are — I, uh — ohhh, boy..."
Carlisle laughed softly, moving his hand from her neck to her cheek and stroking it softly. He sighed happily and kissed her gently again, just long enough to show Elise the entire kiss had been real.
"I likes you," Elise smiled up at him. "Oh no," she pulled back. "Gotta cough."
Elise did as promised, coughing into her elbow and nodding gratefully when Carlisle ran his hand along her back gently.
"Sorry," she said once finished. "Super unattractive."
"Nothing about you is unattractive," Carlisle shook his head. "Would you like to freshen up before we head out? I can pick you up McDonald's."
Elise grinned excitedly. Despite it not being a "fancy" restaurant — they didn't have a McDonalds in Forks and Elise craved the greasy goodness.
"Thank you!" She squealed, pressing a kiss to his lips before grabbing her duffel bag and heading into the bathroom. The laugh that left Carlisle settled into her heart and threatened to swallow it whole.
—
Elise and Carlisle walked around in the evening, the former eating a frozen yogurt that Carlisle purchased for her.
She tried not to let Bella's words get to her.
There was no such thing as vampires.
It was pure coincidence that Carlisle hadn't eaten all day.
Maybe he had an eating disorder.
She couldn't judge — she'd puke everything up in an hour anyway.
Elise threw out the empty carton and grabbed Carlisle's hand, swinging it as they walked.
"Let me know if you feel out of breath at all," he told her, letting her do as she pleased. "We can take a rest before driving home."
"I'm okay," Elise replied. "I...forget I'm sick sometimes...when I'm around you."
A smile pulled at his lips, and he looked to her, stopping their movements and gently guiding her to an alley behind an antique store. "Is that so?" He asked, resting a hand on her waist.
Elise blushed at the sudden shift in his mood, placing a hand on his chest.
"It is," Elise nodded.
"I really wish to kiss you again," he confessed.
Elise grinned at his words, pulling his lips to hers. A light chuckle escaped him as he curled his arm around her waist, pulling her to him. Her hands found his cheeks, keeping him in place and relishing in the feeling of being his.
—
Elise stood next to the bed as Carlisle gathered spare blankets for the pullout sofa.
"Carlisle, just...sleep with me."
Carlisle watched her for a moment, a worried tug of his eyebrows showing his opinion on the matter.
"It's just for the weekend and...boyfriends and girlfriends sleep together."
A sigh left his mouth and he walked to the bed — Elise admiring the view of him in a shirt and dark sweatpants, she didn't think someone could be so attractive in something so casual —pulling out the comforter.
"Are you going to stand there all night?" He teased lightly.
Elise shook her head, clambering into bed next to him.
They stared at each other for a moment.
"I'm not tired," Elise confessed. "Too excited."
He chuckled, pressing a kiss to her head. "Rest, darling, I'll be with you in the morning."
Elise sighed, laying back against the pillows as Carlisle grabbed a book.
"You're not sleeping?"
Carlisle shook his head. "I'm accustomed to long nights with my surgical position, but I'll rest eventually."
Elise stared up at his perfectly sculpted face, a goofy smile painting her lips.
"You're my boyfriend?"
Carlisle smiled, looking down at her. Slowly, he moved his right hand to her face and gently stroked her head and cheek. "I am."
"That's ridiculous," she breathed out. "You're...like Adonis personified."
A laugh left his chest and he smiled down at her. "And you, my Aphrodite."
"Shut up," Elise pressed a kiss to his palm, pulling the blankets up to her shoulders. "I'm sleepy now. Stupid cancer."
"How frustrating it must be," he teased lightly. "Goodnight, my love, I'll see you in the morning."
"I'll see you in my dreams, mister."
