Chapter 3
The next two days go basically the same way. In the morning a woman by and gives us breakfast. Me and Purna talk. The woman returns with lunch. I show Purna the things in my bag and she does the same. The woman comes with dinner, and we talk until we fall asleep.
I have learned that the water elementalists actually move the water away from their faces so they swim underwater with their faces in a little bubble. I also learned that their city is surrounded by a giant bubble of air so they don't swim everywhere and that Purna's full name is Espurna Ivy.
The third day on the bus, we get to Dendo City.
"WE WILL ARRIVE IN DENDO CITY IN FIVE MINUTES! GET YOUR THINGS PACKED!" Someone shouts from the front of the bus. I look at Purna. We had just been talking about her dolphin necklace, which she said her family gave to her as a goodbye gift, but we have been packed for an hour. We rush to the window to catch a glimpse of the lightning elementalist's home and I gasp.
There are rows and rows of shiny metal houses, the streets crowded with people who have bright yellow hair. I see a family in a hover-car run purely on electricity pass by, and even a kid with a hover board. I forgot about all the cool things that only the lightning elementalists can use!
I stare in wonder. Because the hover boards and hover-cars use electricity, the lightning elementalists use their own power. Of course, other elementalists can use them, but it's very rare.
"Look Blitz!" Purna cries as a girl Darts. I gasp as she runs at the speed of lightning across the street.
"Wow..." Purna whispers, at lost for words. I just nod.
An hour later we're being pushed down the hall by all sorts of kids. Some of them look timid (probably transfers) and others just look relieved.
Purna turns to me, gesturing to her yellow sweater, "I wish we could wear something other than yellow, like pink! You can't go wrong with pink."
I sigh as we walk down the steps, "Purna, you know it's to show we're lightning elementalists."
She's been complaining all day.
She pouts slightly, "Yeah, well, why can't we control something pink, like...." She thinks for a minute. Suddenly, she brightens, "Like cotton candy! That would help everybody!"
I face-palm.
We follow the crowd of people until we get to a tall building. A man with ripped jeans and a casual smile steps up and shouts over all the quiet chattering, "TRANSFERS FOLLOW ME!"
He turns around and walks into the building. Me and Purna glance at each other before hoisting our bags more securely over our shoulders and following. Inside the building, there are a set of stairs leading somewhere and an elevator. Surrounding the room is a cluster of couches, beanbags, chairs, and I even see a couple recliners. I look over to my left and see a woman with her Shinju attached to a necklace sitting at a desk, typing on a computer.
Everything but the walls are a shiny metal. The desks, the doors, and the windows, even the doorknobs look like shiny new buttons.
"These people must love the beetles." I mutter to Purna. 'Beetle' is what all the other elementalists call the metal ones.
"Yeah." Purna replies, but before she can say anything else, the man who led us here clears his throat and everyone quiets.
He smiles, "Welcome to the Transfer Building! This is where you will be staying until we find you each a job, where you will earn money to buy a house." He says. "If you will all get comfortable and wait for your name to be called, someone will show you where you will stay. Once you find your way to your room, I would suggest you just stay there and unpack for the rest of the day. I'm sure your tired and must be hungry. Someone will bring your food later."
I look at Purna and we walk over to a two-person couch, sitting down.
"So..." I say awkwardly. Purna nods. The woman at the desk calls a name and a boy walks over to her. As I watch, she says something to him, he nods, and the boy walks over to the elevator. He presses a button and steps inside as the door opens.
We wait for a long time, sitting there, trying to start a conversation that quickly dries up, when Purna's name is called. She glances at me, squeezes my hand, and then walks over to the woman at the desk. As I watch the woman says something, Purna responds, the woman says something, and Purna responds again.
The woman nods and Purna says something and hurries over, "Blitz! Blitz we can be roomies!" She squeals excitedly.
"You want to stay with me, right?" She asks. I smiles and nod, standing up.
She beams and grabs my hand, "Come on! We're at room 399!" She pulls me over to the elevator and jams her finger into a button. The elevator opens and step inside before the door slides shut.
"We're on the third floor." Purna informs me, pressing the button three. It lights up. Some catchy elevator music starts and I get a little queasy as the elevator moves up. Two minutes later we're at the top and the door opens. We step into a long hallway with bright yellow walls and a soft golden carpet.
"Oooo! Soft!" Purna squeals, getting down onto her stomach and rolling around on the carpet.
"Purna!" I exclaim. "We have to....erm...." I try to think of a reason to get her off the ground, "Go see our room!"
Purna is immediately on her feet, her grey eyes twinkling, "Come on!" She says, and, grabbing my hand again, pulls me down the hall. I look at the doors.
300, 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 307, 308. We run until we get to the very end of the hall. 397, 398, 399.
"Okay, the lady said the password was 32, 43, 54." Purna says, walking up to the steel door with the plate that says, 'Room 399.'
She reaches out and puts the password in a small box with different numbers on it. The door clicks and I push it open before it locks again. I lead the way into the dark room and Purna turns on the light behind me.
"Jeez! All this for some newbie's?" Purna comments.
I have to agree. The walls are yellow(go figure) and the carpeting is a blondish color. On the end farthest away from me there's a large window showing Dendo City with yellow curtains on the side. To my left is a room with the door closed and on my right is a window. I walk over to the door and push it open to see a bathroom with a sink and everything.
"Jeez!" Purna says again, coming up behind me. I nod and turn around, walking toward the window. Now I can see one bed on my left and one on my right with bedside tables and clocks. There's a table and four chairs in the corner.
Purna runs over to the bed on the left and jumps onto it, ruining the perfect yellow bedspread.
"I call this one!" She cries. I toss my bag onto the right one but walk over to the window to see out. The view is spectacular. I see many more rows of shiny houses and crystal clear windows. I see people walking and running and hover-boarding up and down the streets, I see old ladies walking their dogs and boys climbing the walls of houses.
"Wow! What a view!" Purna exclaims from behind me.
I jump a little and she laughs, "Come on! Lets unpack!"
For the rest of the day that's what we do. We unpack and then explore everything. We start in the bathroom and play with the shower for a couple minutes before moving to the drawers. They had all sorts of things like perfume, hand sanitizer, lotion, and bars of soap carved into Dendo City's symbol-a gold circle with two lightning bolts crossing each other.
After we mess around with the bathroom we go to the bedside tables and play around for a little bit with that, too, but after we just lay on our beds, staring at the ceiling. The bed is very soft, and feels like mine, except it doesn't smell the same. Mine smelled like Dad and dirt and hard work.
My thoughts are cut off by the sound of a doorbell.
We have a doorbell? I don't even bother getting up, knowing that Purna has already jumped to her feet and run to the door. Sure enough, the sound of the door opening and her talking reaches my ears and she reappears carrying a pizza, two paper plates, and a piece of paper, wearing her usual smile. I look at the paper quizzically, sitting up.
"We got pizza!" She says happily. I stand up and follow Purna as she walks over to the table. We sit down opposite of each other and she sets the pizza down in between us.
"What's the paper say?" I ask. She scans it for a minute before looking up at me. "It's a schedule. Tomorrow they're going to be showing us around and stuff. We have to be up and ready by eight."
I nod, "Cool. What kind of pizza?" I ask, my mouth starting to water. Purna puts a plate down in front of each of us and opens the box, setting the paper off to the side, "I don't know.....Oo! Cheese! My favorite."
We eat the pizza and get into bed. I glance at the clock. 8:30. Well, we have to be up early tomorrow anyway.
"I wonder what tomorrow will bring." Purna sighs.
"Yeah....all sorts of crazy stuff could happen." I say.
"Yeah...." Purna whispers.
I yawn and she yawns. A couple minutes later we're both sound asleep.
