Camille didn't come the next day. Nor the next. Savannah was becoming increasingly worried, and there was nothing Tandy could do to reassure her. She tried to coaxe her, speaking in a soothing voice, letting Savannah have her own way, but NO, Savannah was out of her mind.
It was luch, and Savannah sat at the same table as Tandy did. "Sarah, I'm so worried! Camille hasn't been replying me on email, facebook and twitter!" Savannah said distressedly. Tandy patted Savannah's shoulder, wondering what to say.
"You should stop worrying."
A voice cut into their not-so-much-of-a-conversation. Savannah's friends all turned to glare at the person who had spoken. It was a girl. It was thegirl. Sandra, her name was. Tandy looked at the girl, angry, trying to find something in her that she could glare at. But there was nothing to glare at. Sandra spoke with bluntness and plain honesty with no arrogance in her voice. Savannah looked up. "Sandra?" she asked, surprised. "What did you say?"
Sandra sighed. "I said, you should stop worrying."
"Why?" Savannah sniffed. "Camille might be kidnapped! Or worse!" Tandy looked at Sandra, waiting for an answer, trying to read Sandra's expression. Was it just her, or was the air around her table suddenly warmer? Sandra's face was emotionless.
"Camille would not want you to worry yourself to death," Sandra said in her Irish-accented voice. "As her friend, you should worry, yes, but do not just bother everyone with your wails. Take action and try to find out what is going on."
Tandy was surprised to find out how much she agreed with Sandra. She was very annoyed by Savannah's wails, and she wanted Savannah to actually do something. Before any of the other girls at the table retorted, Tandy spoke up. "She's right, Savannah," she said quietly. "You should try to find out what is wrong."
Savannah looked surprised. "Why didn't I think of that before?" she asked herself, slapping a hand to her forehead. Tandy shivered. It was colder all of a sudden. Savannah turned to thank Sandra, but the other girl was gone.
Was the girl somehow connected to the mysterious warmth?
Nix stared at the girl- Sandra. Did she actually shut Savannah up? He didn't mean to listen in, but he couldn't help it- he sat at a table next to Savannah's with her brother. Speaking of Maximus, he was staring at his sister's table. "Er- what's that girl called?" he whispered. Nix was baffled.
"What girl?"
"That one."
"Which one?"
"You know, the cute one with black hair."
"Oh. I think her name is Sarah May. Why?"
"Oh," Maximus blushed. "No reason. She just puts Sav in a better mood, so I'm curious." Nix frowned, not satisfied with his answer, but he decided to drop the subject. "What's the redhead's name?" he asked, interested. Whoever could manage to get Savannah White to stop talking had talent. Nix had never seen her before. That was strange- he saw everyone in the school.
Well, almost everyone.
Maximus' face twisted with concentration as he tried to remember the redhead's name. "Er- Sandy-no-Cassandra or something, or... or..." Then he snapped his fingers, eyes brightening and he leaned across the table. "Sandra! Yeah, that sounds correct. She's Irish, I think. She has an Irish accent." Nix tried to search for the girl Sandra. He found her sitting alone at a table, glaring at her food as if it had tried to kill her.
Nix shrugged and turned away, but before that, Sandra looked up and caught his gaze. They stared intently at each other, then turned away simutaneously. Nix shuddered. What was that feeling? It was like he should know her, but he didn't. When he caught her gaze, it was like a fire had flared to life inside him, burning all the organs in his body, then, with a final blaze, it switched off once he looked away.
Most curious.
Maximus sighed, snapping Nix out of his thoughts. "What time is it?" Nix asked distractedly. Maximus checked his watch. "Dunno," he shrugged. "My watch shows the wrong time. Says it's five forty-six." Nix snorted, nearly choking on some bread he had put into his mouth. Maximus patted his back, which was awkward as he had to reach over the table to do this. Some people near by snickered, but Nix ignored them. "Peasants!" he muttered to himself, so soft that only he could hear.
Bored, Nix's eyes swept across the cafeteria, where high schoolers were chatting. His eyes darted to where the girl, Sandra, had been. His mouth dropped open. She was gone! He scanned the cafeteria. She wasn't there either. Was it his imagination, or was the cafeteria suddenly.... colder?
Yes, it was definitely colder. Strange. The warmth was gone, and so was Sandra. Strange. Very strange...
Nix picked up his tray of almost-uneaten food and shoved it over to Maximus. Maximus' eyes lit up. "Really?" he asked. Nix nodded absentmindedly and sighed. Humans were so simple, yet so complicated! Nix wished he could understand them better, but try as he might, he knew he would never get them. You ate when you were hungry. Maximus was either hugrier than your average person or just plain greedy. Nix, as a good friend, chose to think option one.
Suddenly, Savannah appeared next to him. "Have you seen that girl- Sandra?" she asked breathlessly. "I need to thank her."
"Thank her? What for?" Maximus asked.
"For waking me up, silly! I was so wrapped up in my misery that I forgot my surroundings!"
"What happened to the real Savannah? The one who's not so graceful."
"Answer the question!"
Maximus shrugged uneasily. "Dunno. One minute she was there at that table, the next, she's gone!" Savannah's shoulders sagged and she shivered. "It's so cold. Why did it get so cold?" Nix shrugged. "Maybe you imagined the warmth?" he lied smoothly just as a very tearful-looking girl came up with Sarah May accompanying her. The girl had tear-tracks down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!" she sobbed as a teacher came over.
"Sarah, what is this?" the teacher, Mrs. Gayle, demanded. "Why is Maria in this state?" Sarah shrugged and patted the girl on the back. Maria burst into tears and tried to talk, which resulted in a lot choking. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Gayle!" she sobbed. "I was in the science lab! I-I overturned the bunsen burner." Mrs. Gayle had a shock look on her face. "The lab is on fire?" she asked incredulously. Maria nodded tearfully.
Just then, a voice spoke behind the group.
"Not anymore."
The whole cafeteria stared at the person who spoke- Sandra. Maria glared at Sandra. "Yes it is!" Nix glanced at the red haired girl. The redhead's eyes were peircing. "I told you, not anymore." Mrs. Gayle looked bewildered. "Do you mean that someone put out the fire?"
"Yes. It was easy to deal with- it was only a small fire. "
"Do- do you mean you put out the fire?"
Sandra paused for a long time. Nix had a feeling she was hiding something. Then Sandra nodded. "Nothing important was burnt." she said simply, her fire-red hair curling. Nix's eyes widened as the temperture in the cafeteria seemingly rose.
Then she was gone.
Nix shivered.
Tandy saw that boy Nick's eyes widening, and she felt like widening her eyes, too. The cafeteria was hot, when it had been cold before. Then, suddenly, it was cold again. Not freezing like before, but still cold enough to make you shiver. Mrs. Gayle frowned. "What is that girl's name?" she asked, her brown eyes fierce. Tandy shrugged uneasily. Even she didn't know. She glanced at Maria, who shook her head.
Maximus White mumbled something, his face red.
"Yes?" Mrs. Gayle asked. He mumbled something again. Mrs. Gayle looked at Nick, who was closest to Maximus, for clarification. Nick shrugged. "Maximus said that her name is Sandra." Tandy frowned. Sandra.... Where had she seen her before?
Oh, she remembered, At Savannah's table. She was the one who had calmed Savannah!
Mrs. Gayle walked away, muttering under her breath about a rude but courageous student. Tandy tried to supress her grin. Maria smiled at her. "Thanks, Sarah," she said gratefully. "For accompanying me." Tandy nodded, hiding her pride. Then she scolded herself silently. You did nothing! the voice told her, cold and harsh. It was Sarah that did something, not you! You are the thief Tandoori, not the pretty girl Sarah! You are a thief, understand? Thief!
But I helped Sarah! I gave her friends by taking on her identity! a small part of her whined, too stubborn to give up.
No, you gave her false friends! You are worse than a thief! You are a LIAR! scolded the voice in a fearsome voice. The small, rebelling part of her shrunk into the shadows, giving up. Surprised how Tandy worked? Tandy herself was surprised how easy she gave up. She was weak! She hated being weak, like she was a baby or something.
"Sarah?" a tentative voice said. "Are you okay?" Maria. Tandy raised her head, nodding, but she knew she wasn't. She was far from okay. Unintentionally, she caught Nick's eye. Suddenly, she felt vulnerable, very vulnerable, like she had just exposed her deepest, darkest secret...
When the feeling passed, it left Tandy shaken. But, most of all, she felt like she should know him. Like someone blind knew when he or she was holding a fruit, but they know it's a fruit- they just don't know what fruit it is. It was a feeling that Tandy was not so eager to feel, yet it left her wanting to feel it again. What a curious sensation.
Tandy shook her head violently and, with a nod at Maria, she walked briskly to Savannah White's table and sat down, placing her hands on the cold, hard table. Suddenly, the table rocked- Savannah was leaning forward eagerly. And so were the other girls. "Oh my god! Savannah, I think your brother likes her!" Claire Lox giggled. Savannah smiled, then laughed. "I know!" she said in a hushed voice. "Sarah, did you see him?"
Tandy's face went red- Sarah had gained another fan. It wasn't fair- Tandy gained a fan for Sarah, instead of Sarah getting the fan for herself! She silently punished herself. Oh great! You've gained Sarah another false friend! You darned idiot!
Tandy sighed inwardly.
"Look at her face!" Chrissy McCartney squealed. Marianne Collins nodded. "But Chrissy, " she complained. "You should stop embarrassing her! " Tandy nodded. "Yes!" She agreed, laughing. Savannah grinned. "I don't mind my brother being my good friend's fan, so be nice, Sarah. " Tandy was still red-faced. She stared at the table, fiercely repremanding herself. Sarah May does not need anymore fake friends! she scolded herself inwardly. Great job, Tandy!
Suddenly, she felt a jolt, like someone had pinched her when she wasn't suspecting it. She didn't really think about it, only about the nagging feeling that someone was coming. Someone was supposed to know- no, someone she would know- by sight.
The sound of laughter broke into her thoughts. The girls at another table had heard and they were applauding. Tandy turned an even brighter red. Why did she have to make such a big mistake? She had lied enough! How could she survive, living in a world full of lies she herself had told? Impossible! Tandy sighed inwardly and submerged herself in a conversation Chrissy had whipped up about clothes.
All this talk bored her- she might even catch her death.
Chisandra stared at her hands. What had she done? Seriously, she had given out too much evidence- confidential evidence! She glared at the table and replayed the day's events in her head, just to relieve her boredom. She tugged her curly red hair absentmindedly and winced as some strands popped out from the place it was tucked under. She counted to ten silently- nothing happened. She was in control, then. She resumed her thoughts.
Suddenly, she felt a jolt, like electricity flowing through her. Something's coming! a small voice whispered. Something whom you will know by sight. Someone who you have not seen in fifteen years. Chisandra trembled- with excitement or fear it was hard to tell. She had known for her whole life someon would come- but was that person's arrival something to fear or look forward to?
