Chapter 18: Crimson
"Team, report for mission briefing."
I put on my uniform and made my way to the training area. Batman stood there the screen ready behind him. Once the entire team was there he started the briefing.
"The Joker has escaped from Arkham and is wreaking havoc in Star City, normally the league would be able to handle something like this, but we're spread thin all over the world right now. Your mission is to go in and stop him."
We all ran to the bio-ship in anticipation. I tapped my foot on the floor looking out the window. This seemed a bit too easy, Joker works discreetly most of the time, not openly destroying things in a city without planning before. He may be insane, like really insane, but he isn't stupid.
When we arrived at Star City we landed the bio-ship where we were sure it wouldn't be damaged. The Joker was laughing and throwing explosives at the building around him.
"(H/n), Robin, and Artemis take the Joker, the rest of us will help get the civilians out." Aqualad ordered.
I jumped out of the bio-ship and landed lightly on my feet. Robin and Artemis followed me out. We nodded at each other and ran towards the Joker.
"Joker!" I yelled successfully grabbing his attention. He turned to me and smiled, he smiled. I still don't understand how someone can be that insane.
"You're kind of insane sometimes too." B.E.M appeared, once again the dust formed a copy of me, she looked the same as always. I glared at her trying to focus on the mission.
"Shoo," I hissed quietly. B.E.M frowned and disappeared.
"Hello mini heroes. I was hoping it would be you, after our attempt with the plants I was bored, and you have the ability to entertain me." He said before laughing.
"You're going to end up back in the same cell, then we'll see how entertained you are." Robin growled.
A spark grew into a flame on my palms. I threw the fire at the Joker, he cackled and moved away from it. "You're going to have to do better than that."
Artemis shot an arrow at him, he grabbed it in the air looking it over. He nodded approvingly.
"You're very much like your mentor, never realising that the 'shooting arrows trick' gets old." Joker commented. Robin charged towards him throwing punches. The Joker continued to dodge and eventually knocked him back into a wall. Robin fell to the ground before groaning and getting up slowly. "There's only one of you that I really want to fight, so let's get rid of the extras."
Joker threw a flash bomb towards Robin and Artemis temporarily blinding them. They both fell to their knees holding their eyes. Why would the Joker want to fight me, and only me?
"Why me?" I asked.
"You're interesting, the league's favorite." He ran towards me and threw a punch at my stomach. I caught his hand and held it behind his back.
"What's your game?" I questioned.
He didn't respond, instead kicked me in the stomach. I was knocked back into the wall of a nearby building. I looked over hoping that Robin and Artemis were recovered, but to no avail, they were both still blinking their eyes rapidly trying to clear their vision. Their arms were out in front of them like they were trying to find something.
"Pathetic." B.E.M snorted.
"You guys okay?" I yelled.
"Fine." Robin assured.
"Just trying to get rid of the giant dots everywhere." Artemis added.
Joker pushed me up against the wall more holding a knife to my throat. I sneered looking at the dagger dangerously lose to cutting me.
"Kill him," B.E.M whispered into my ear, "Do it!"
"Why so serious?" He asked a sick grin spreading across his face.
"(H/n)!" I heard Aqualad yell. Finally, took them long enough. The Joker actually frowned, it only lasted for a second before he started laughing and took the knife from my throat plunging it into my stomach. I gasped in pain.
B.E.M kneeled in front of my fallen body. She tsked, and shook her head.
"You should have killed him, now, you're going to die," I just groaned in response.
Artemis recovered her sight and shot a foam arrow at the Joker trapping him in the substance. Robin -who had also recovered- ran over to my hunched over bleeding figure quickly.
"(H/n)-" He started holding me gently.
"It's okay." I whispered weakly. Robin picked me up and started to run towards the bio-ship. I cupped his cheek in my hand. I could hear the police sirens assuring me that the Joker would be taken care of.
"(Y/n)." He whispered.
"It's okay." I repeated, my eyelids becoming heavier. "It's okay..."
"(Y/n) don't close your eyes, please, stay awake." Robin begged.
I looked at him through half closed eyes, my breaths became short and labored. We had reached the ship by now and were flying back to the cave. The team was crowded around me saying different things all at once. I kept my hands on my stomach, the material becoming dark, and my hands becoming slippery with the crimson liquid. Everything blurred, but two figures were always in focus. Robin, who was gripping my hand and keeping his head down, trying to hide the tears that were falling. And B.E.M, her figure my figure. Her arms crossed and looking at me disappointed, she was slowly shaking her head.
When we reached the cave Batman was not expecting what he saw. He rushed onto the ship and picked me up, swiftly walking to the cave's med center.
"What happened?" He asked. I opened my mouth to speak but ended up coughing. A small amount of blood came from my mouth.
"The Joker, he blinded me and Artemis and stabbed her. This is my fault." Robin sighed sadly.
I was set on a bed, being hooked up to several machines. I cloth was pressed up against my stomach slowing the heavy bleeding. I lost so much blood. Everytime I blinked my eyes closed for a longer period of time.
"Aqualad, contact the rest of the league." Batman ordered. "(Y/n), do not close your eyes."
Robin held my hand tightly, refusing to be moved from my side. I squeezed his hand weakly moving my head to look at him.
"It's okay, it's going to be okay." I whispered then hissed as Batman started to address the wound, cleaning and wrapping it.
"(Y/n) how much pain are you in?" Batman asked. I looked up at him, a tear rolled down my face, yet I still smiled.
"None." Batman and Robin looked at each other knowingly, both of them paling.
I couldn't force my eyes to stay open anymore. A heavenly darkness took over, and I could feel nothing.
"(Y/n)." A soft voice called. I knew that voice. Her words echoed in my mind everyday I was stuck with the Brain.
"Mom."
"Hello, my daughter." She smiled. I hugged her tightly, tears sprang to my eyes. I looked up at her. Her eyes were purely black. So she was my demon side, but she seemed so kind... My dad must have changed her, I hoped I would end up like her someday.
"There's so much I want ask you." I whispered. She ran her hand through my hair.
"There might be time for that, (Y/n), you were stabbed."
"I know... Am I dead?" I asked.
"Not exactly. You're in the space between life and death. You have a choice child. You can stay here with me and your father, or go back to your friends. Life, or death."
"But... I can't. I can't choose."
"Let me show you something."
The darkness around us shrunk away revealing the med center of the cave. I -my physical body- laid on one of the beds, machined hooked up to my unconscious form. Robin sat at my side in his civvies. His glasses were off and on the bedside table since the team was absent, but his eyes were tightly shut, hiding the shade of blue I loved.
"(Y/n), this is all my fault. I should have been there, protected you. Not only that, but I should have told you before, I should've kissed you before. And now you might... You might-" Robin broke off with a sob his shoulders shaking.
"Mom... How long have I been out?" I asked her quietly.
"Only a few hours. Consider this an out of body experience."
I looked back at the crying Robin, then to my mother. A choice to be made. Life and death. Life was hard and dangerous and cruel, but there was the team and Robin, and the league. In death there was peace, and mom and dad, but I was only 13 I would be missing my life. I looked to my mom who smiled at me.
"Mom... I love you, but the people in life, they saved me, raised me. I- I choose life."
"I thought you would say that. (Y/n), if you choose life, then I want you to let us go. Don't hold onto our deaths, okay."
I looked my mom in the eyes, "I don't know if I'll be able to do that mother."
I took a deep breath and opened my eyes. I shot up then whimpered in pain. Robin's head shot up, his cheeks red from crying, his blue eyes bloodshot. He hugged me gently, quiet sobs sounding from him.
"It's okay," I whispered, then cringed. It was the same thing I said when I was dying.
"I don't want you fighting anymore," he sighed.
"Dick, you don't stop fighting in the war, because you were wounded in the battle."
The team and some of the Justice League ran into the room. Robin quickly put his glasses on. The tension seemed to disappear from the room as everyone saw that I was alive. I smiled already feeling better. I knew I would heal faster than the average person, it always seemed that way. I must have gained that ability after I was hurt almost everyday.
I chose the hard path. The painful and dangerous path, but it would lead to something beautiful.
