Growing Storms
Chapter 0.2: Growing Storms
Location: Inner Sphere – Planet: Teyvat – Inazuma
Two years had passed since Lupin Shogun first picked up a wooden sword beneath the ancient Sakura tree.
The Oni prince was now six years old—taller, stronger, and sharper in both mind and blade. His small crimson horns had grown perhaps a finger's width, and his violet eyes held a spark of something deeper than mere childhood wonder.
Narrator: "In the nation of eternal thunder, time moved differently. For some, it crawled. For others, it flew. And for the children of the Shogun, it seemed to dance—pushing them toward destinies they could not yet imagine."
The Shogun Children – Two Years Later
The four children of Raiden Ei and Kijin Shogun had continued to grow—each in their own unique direction, each revealing new facets of their personalities.
Lupin Shogun (Age 6) – The eldest. His training with Haru had intensified, and his mastery of both Electro and Haki had reached levels that surprised even his teachers. But beyond his combat prowess, something else had awakened in the young Oni: a fascination with technology, with robotics, with the machines that dotted the skies above Inazuma.
Scaramouche Shogun (Age 6) – The second child had become something of an enigma. He spent hours alone, reading in corners, staring out windows, speaking only when necessary. His family called him the "edge loner" with affectionate exasperation. But beneath his brooding exterior beat a heart fiercely loyal to those he loved.
Rebecca Shogun (Age 5) – The third child had become the family's sun. Bright, energetic, and endlessly enthusiastic, Rebecca approached every day as if it were the greatest adventure life had to offer.
Tade Shogun (Age 3) – The youngest had changed the most dramatically. In just two years, Tade had grown to the size of a five-year-old—taller and more muscular than her siblings had been at the same age. She could speak now, though she chose her words carefully. Her movements were sometimes clumsy as she learned to control her rapidly growing body, but her heart was pure and kind.
Raiden Ei (watching her children from the palace balcony): "They are growing so fast, Kijin."
Kijin Shogun (standing beside her): "That is the way of children, my love. We plant the seeds. We water them with love and wisdom. And then we watch them reach for the sun."
Tade Shogun – The Gentle Giant
At three years old, Tade stood nearly as tall as six-year-old Lupin. Her body was solid—muscular in a way that spoke of latent strength waiting to be awakened. Her dark-indigo hair fell in waves past her shoulders, and her violet eyes held a calm that belied her age.
But for all her size, Tade was clumsy.
Tade (attempting to walk across the garden path, tripping over her own feet, landing face-first in a flower bed): "Mmph."
Rebecca (rushing over, giggling): "Tade! You fell again!"
Tade (pushing herself up, flowers stuck in her hair, dirt on her nose): "I am... still learning. My body grows faster than my balance."
Mrs. Linda (approaching, trunk gently brushing dirt from Tade's face): "Patience, little one. Your body will learn to keep pace with your spirit."
Tade (leaning into Mrs. Linda's trunk, a rare smile crossing her face): "Thank you, Mrs. Linda."
Despite her physical awkwardness, Tade possessed a kindness that touched everyone who met her. She would spend hours sitting with the elderly Elephant Centaurs, listening to their stories. She would share her meals with anyone who looked hungry.
Narrator: "Tade Shogun did not speak often. But when she did, her words carried weight—as if each one had been carefully chosen from a vast treasury of wisdom."
Rebecca Shogun – The Little Sister Who Shines
At five years old, Rebecca had boundless energy and an irrepressible spirit. She loved to show off—whether demonstrating her latest acrobatic trick, reciting a poem, or simply striking a pose.
Rebecca (standing on one leg on top of a garden wall, arms spread wide): "Behold! Rebecca the Magnificent! Fear my—"
She wobbled. Flailed. Fell backward into the elephant pond with a massive SPLASH.
Rebecca (emerging from the water, soaking wet, a frog on her head): "...splash?"
The elephants nearby trumpeted with laughter.
But Rebecca's favorite activity was tending to her garden—a small plot behind the palace where she grew vegetables, flowers, and herbs. She would often recruit the elephants to help, using their trunks to spray water and create rainbows.
Rebecca (laughing as an elephant sprayed her): "MORE! I'M NOT WET ENOUGH!"
Narrator: "Rebecca Shogun approached everything with her whole heart—without reservation, without fear, without regret."
Scaramouche Shogun – The Edge Loner
At six years old, Scaramouche had perfected the art of brooding. He could often be found sitting in the highest window of the palace, staring out at the storm clouds with an expression that suggested he was contemplating the futility of existence.
Servant (approaching carefully): "Young master Scaramouche? Would you like some lunch?"
Scaramouche: "No."
Servant: "Perhaps some tea?"
Scaramouche: "I said no."
The servant retreated.
Lupin (climbing up to sit beside his brother): "You know, people might start thinking you don't like them."
Scaramouche: "I don't."
Lupin: "You don't like anyone?"
Scaramouche (glancing at his brother): "I tolerate you. Barely."
Lupin laughed.
Lupin: "Come on, Scara. What's really bothering you?"
Scaramouche was silent for a long moment.
Scaramouche: "Do you ever wonder if any of this matters? The training. The fighting. Does it actually change anything?"
Lupin: "If you save one person. Just one. Then it matters."
Scaramouche: "That's naive."
Lupin: "Maybe. But it's what I believe."
Scaramouche looked away.
Scaramouche (internal): "One person. Just one. He really believes that."
Narrator: "Scaramouche Shogun wore his loneliness like armor. But beneath that armor beat a heart that longed to connect—he just didn't know how to ask for it."
Lupin Shogun – Looking to the Skies
While his siblings played, trained, and brooded, Lupin often found himself lying on his back in the palace gardens, staring up at the sky.
But not the sky exactly.
Beyond the perpetual storm clouds of Inazuma, Lupin could see the colonies—massive cylindrical structures orbiting Teyvat, their mirrored surfaces reflecting sunlight down onto the planet below.
Narrator: "To most people of Teyvat, the orbital colonies were simply there—as natural as the moon or the stars. But to Lupin Shogun, they represented possibility."
He watched as Pelicans—atmospheric shuttles with wide, bird-like wings—descended through the clouds, their engines humming with contained power. They carried goods and people between the surface and the colonies.
He watched as Mobile Suits—not war machines, but working suits—stomped across distant fields, planting crops, constructing buildings, clearing debris.
Lupin (internal): "They're not weapons. They're tools. They're helping people."
This realization had struck Lupin deeply. The histories spoke of Mobile Suits as instruments of destruction—but here, in the Inner Sphere, they were something else entirely.
Lupin (internal): "Maybe technology isn't inherently evil. Maybe it's just a tool. And tools can be used for good or for ill, depending on who wields them."
He thought about his training with Haru. About the blade in his hand.
A sword could kill. A sword could protect. The difference wasn't in the steel—it was in the heart of the one who held it.
Narrator: "This philosophy would come to define Lupin Shogun's life: strength without purpose is just violence, but strength with purpose is salvation."
The Elephant Sanctuary – A World Within a World
The Shogun Elephant Sanctuary was a vast preserve within the palace grounds—home to elephants from across the Inner Sphere.
Two species lived within its borders:
African Forest Elephants – Their skin darker, their ears larger, their tusks curving outward. The females of this species were naturally tuskless—a quirk of evolution that had become more common over generations.
Asian Elephants – Their skin lighter, their ears smaller, their foreheads marked with distinctive twin-domes. Many females of this species were also tuskless, their value measured not by ivory but by wisdom.
Narrator: "In the sanctuary, elephants of both species lived, played, and sometimes fought—for territory, for status, for the simple joy of asserting their strength. But beneath their disagreements ran a current of mutual respect."
Lupin watched from a shaded overlook as the elephants moved across the preserve.
Some grazed peacefully together—African and Asian, tusked and tuskless, old and young.
Others postured—trunks raised, ears flared, feet stomping—establishing boundaries that would be respected until the next challenge.
Lupin (internal): "They fight, but they don't destroy each other. They establish order without annihilation."
Dolores – The Large Female Asian Elephant with No Tusks
Among the Asian elephants, one stood out.
Dolores was a massive female—larger than most of her species, with a broad back and an even broader posterior. Her skin was a warm gray, her eyes held ancient wisdom, and her trunk moved with playful grace despite her size.
She had no tusks.
Narrator: "Dolores the elephant was known throughout the sanctuary for two things: her enormous rump, which she wielded with surprising precision, and her gentle heart, which she offered freely to all who visited her."
Dolores (rumbling softly as Lupin approached): "Little Oni. You return to watch us again."
Lupin (sitting on a rock near her): "I like watching the elephants. You're all so... different. But you find ways to get along."
Dolores (her trunk curling playfully): "Getting along is a choice, little one. We choose it every day—even when we disagree."
She shifted her massive body, her rump bumping against a nearby tree. The tree shook. Leaves rained down.
Dolores (trumpeting softly, almost embarrassed): "Ah. My apologies to the tree."
Lupin laughed.
Lupin: "Your rump is very... powerful."
Dolores (her eyes crinkling with elephant amusement): "It is useful for many things. Sitting. Leaning. Intimidating rivals. And occasionally, accidentally redecorating the landscape."
Oromina – The Young Female African Forest Elephant
Across the sanctuary, near the watering hole, another tuskless elephant caught Lupin's attention.
Oromina was a young adult female African forest elephant—smaller than Dolores, but leaner and quicker. Her skin was a darker gray, nearly charcoal in certain lights, and her eyes held a spark of youthful mischief.
She was also tuskless.
Narrator: "Oromina had arrived at the sanctuary only recently—a rescue from a poaching zone where her herd had been decimated. She was still learning to trust, still learning to play, still learning that not all beings wished her harm."
Oromina (watching Lupin from a distance, trunk raised warily): "Who is the small horned one?"
Dolores (ambling over, her massive rump swaying): "That is Lupin Shogun. The Oni prince. He is a friend to elephants."
Oromina: "I have met few friends. Most came with weapons."
Dolores: "He carries no weapon now. Only curiosity. And perhaps some fruit in his pockets—he often brings fruit."
Oromina's ears perked forward.
"...Fruit?"
Narrator: "Trust, once broken, takes time to rebuild. But Oromina was learning—day by day, apple by apple, gentle word by gentle word—that not all beings wished to harm her."
The Elephant Centaur Shrine Maidens
Among those who cared for the sanctuary's elephants, the most devoted were the Elephant Centaur Shrine Maidens.
Narrator: "These unique beings possessed the upper body of a human or humanoid—torso, head, arms—while their lower half was the complete quadrupedal body of an elephant. Their skin transitioned naturally from the smoothness of their human form to the thick, wrinkled, coarse texture of their elephant half."
They moved through the sanctuary with grace that belied their size—massive legs carrying them across the preserve, trunks (for those who possessed them) tending to the needs of their four-legged cousins.
The shrine maidens wore traditional red-and-white robes over their human halves, while their elephant lower bodies were adorned with ceremonial paints and bells that chimed with each step.
Lead Elephant Centaur Shrine Maiden (a majestic figure with silver hair and wise eyes, her elephant legs steady beneath her): "Lupin Shogun. You honor us with your presence."
Lupin (bowing respectfully): "Maidens. The sanctuary is beautiful today."
Lead Shrine Maiden: "Every day is beautiful when elephants are present. They remind us of what matters—family, memory, and the long walk between birth and farewell."
She gestured with her trunk toward the preserve.
Lead Shrine Maiden: "Today, we perform the Blessing of the Tuskless—a ceremony honoring those who carry no ivory, whose worth is measured not by what grows from their face, but by what grows in their hearts."
The Blessing Ceremony
The ceremony was simple but profound.
The Elephant Centaur Shrine Maidens gathered in a circle, their massive elephant legs forming a protective barrier around the tuskless elephants of the sanctuary. They chanted in the old language—sounds that vibrated through the ground and into the bones of everyone present.
Lead Shrine Maiden (raising her arms, her voice carrying across the preserve): "We call upon the Electro Archon, upon the spirits of this land, upon the ancestors who walked these grounds before us. Bless these tuskless ones. Protect them from poachers. Guide them to peace."
The air crackled.
Lightning danced across the sky—controlled arcs that seemed to respond to the shrine maiden's words.
The tuskless elephants raised their trunks, and a sound emerged from them—a deep, resonant rumble that vibrated through Lupin's chest, his horns, his very soul.
Narrator: "It was said that when elephants rumble together, they are speaking to something beyond the physical—to the earth itself, to the spirits that dwell in stone and stream. And on that day, the earth listened."
Dolores rumbled with the others, her massive body trembling with the effort. Oromina, still learning to trust, rumbled softly—her voice joining the chorus for the first time.
Lupin felt tears prick at his eyes.
Lupin (internal): "This is what I'm protecting. This connection. This harmony. This life."
Lupin's Tablet – Heroes and Politics
After the ceremony, Lupin retreated to his favorite spot in the garden—lying on his back in the grass, a tablet in his hands.
Narrator: "Even at six years old, Lupin Shogun was curious about the world beyond Inazuma. He read voraciously—news from across the Inner Sphere, reports from the colonies, analysis of political movements and hero organizations."
His tablet displayed a news feed from the Grand Arcane Institute—the hero academy that stood as a symbol of true heroism, unlike the corrupt Union Academy that dominated the headlines of other worlds.
News Anchor (on the tablet): "...and in the Outer Rim, Union Academy continues to face criticism for its handling of the recent Beastman displacement crisis. Critics say the academy prioritizes celebrity heroes over actual rescue operations..."
Lupin frowned.
Lupin (internal): "Union Academy again. They're always in the news—always for the wrong reasons."
He scrolled through article after article.
Headline: "Union Academy Graduate Arrested for Excessive Force Against Unarmed Suspect"
Headline: "Union Academy Board Members Accused of Embezzling Donation Funds"
Headline: "Quirkless Applicant Turned Away from Union Academy: 'Go Be a Police Officer'"
Lupin's grip on the tablet tightened.
Lupin (internal): "They call themselves heroes. But they're not protecting anyone. They're just... performing."
He switched to a different feed—one from the Grand Arcane Institute.
Headline: "Grand Arcane Institute Welcomes First Elven Exchange Students from Frieren's Realm"
Headline: "Institute Rescue Team Saves 200 from Colony Collapse"
Headline: "Mech Pilot Training Program Accepting Applicants of All Races, All Backgrounds"
Lupin smiled.
Lupin (internal): "That's what a hero academy should be. Open to everyone. Focused on helping, not on fame."
He bookmarked the page.
The African Forest Elephant – Young Female Adult Oromina
A shadow fell over Lupin's tablet.
He looked up.
Oromina stood above him—the young female African forest elephant, her dark gray skin nearly blending with the storm clouds behind her. She regarded him with cautious eyes, her trunk twitching nervously.
Lupin (sitting up slowly, not making sudden movements): "Hello, Oromina."
Oromina (rumbling softly): "You are the one they call Lupin. The Oni prince who brings fruit."
Lupin: "I brought apples today. Would you like one?"
He reached into his pocket and produced a red apple—shiny, fresh, perfect.
Oromina's ears flared forward. Her trunk extended, sniffing the air.
Oromina: "Why do you feed us? What do you want?"
Lupin (tossing the apple gently to her): "I don't want anything. I just... like elephants. You're all so big and strong and gentle. I want to make sure you're okay."
Oromina caught the apple with her trunk—then paused, studying him.
Oromina (internal): "He wants nothing. He just... gives."
She ate the apple.
It was delicious.
Oromina (rumbling more softly now, her body relaxing): "...that was good. Do you have another?"
Lupin (grinning, producing a second apple): "I brought plenty."
Narrator: "Trust, once broken, takes time to rebuild. But Lupin Shogun was patient. He would wait—as long as it took—for Oromina to learn that not all beings wished her harm."
Evening in the Palace
That night, the Shogun family gathered for dinner.
Rebecca dominated the conversation, describing the Blessing of the Tuskless in enthusiastic detail—how beautiful the flowers were, how loud the elephants trumpeted, how she had personally fed a carrot to a grumpy African forest elephant.
Rebecca: "And THEN the lightning came down and everyone RUMBLED and it was SO COOL!"
Scaramouche (poking at his food): "Lightning comes down every day. We live in Inazuma."
Rebecca: "But this was special lightning!"
Tade (quietly): "All lightning is special."
Everyone turned to look at her.
Tade (not looking up from her plate): "Lightning is Mother's power. It comes from her. It is... a gift."
Raiden Ei (smiling warmly): "That is a beautiful way of seeing it, Tade."
Kijin Shogun (raising his cup): "To gifts. To family. To the future."
Everyone: "To the future!"
Lupin looked around the table—at his mother, his father, his siblings, at Mrs. Linda and Lil Linda standing nearby, at the Elephant Centaur guardians at the doors.
Lupin (internal): "This is what I'm fighting for. This is what I'll protect. Always."
He thought of Dolores and her powerful rump.
He thought of Oromina and her cautious trust.
He thought of the shrine maidens and their devotion.
Lupin (internal): "And one day... I'll protect beings like them too. All of them. Everywhere."
Narrator: "The storm was still gathering. The darkness was still approaching. But in the heart of a six-year-old Oni, a light was growing—a light that would one day pierce the darkest shadows."
This was only the beginning.
