13.
The neon lights of the city blurred past Areum's window as she sped back to the cafe. The silence of the tea house was still ringing in her ears, making the hum of the engine feel like a rock concert. When she finally burst through the doors of the cafe, the smell of burnt milk and the sound of Jin's dramatic sigh greeted her like a warm hug.
"He's still in the back, Ari," Jin said, not even looking up from the espresso machine. "I think I broke his spirit. Apparently, 'shelf-bangs' is a very sensitive topic in the dairy community."
Areum laughed, the tension from her date finally snapping. "Lock the door, Jin. Let's go. I need something that isn't green tea and psychological breakthroughs."
An hour later, they were tucked into a corner booth at a restaurant so upscale the menus didn't have prices. The lighting was dim, the wine was crisp, and for the first time all day, Areum felt like she could breathe.
Jin swirled his glass, his eyes glinting with mischief. "So. Give me the post-mortem. We've had the Action Hero (Jungkook), who nearly died for a YouTube video, and the Idol (Jimin), who was more in love with his ego than your emotions. Now we have the Textbook. What was the verdict?"
"He's... perfect," Areum sighed, leaning her head back. "He's stable. He's kind. He poured the tea like it was a sacred ritual. He's a psychiatrist, Jin. He actually listened."
"And?"
"And I almost fell asleep," she admitted, hiding her face in her hands. "He's so healthy, it's exhausting. Every time I felt a spark of annoyance or excitement, he'd label it. 'Oh, that's just your cortisol spiking, Areum.' It felt like being under a microscope."
Jin leaned forward, his expression shifting from playful to curious. "Then reject him. If he's a 'human weighted blanket' and you want a bonfire, why are you hesitating?"
"Because I'm confused!" Areum countered. "He's too good to reject on a whim. What if I'm just being judgmental? Maybe he's just wearing a professional mask, and it takes time to drop it. He did tell me he almost threw a chair off a balcony once... that's a start, right?"
Jin hummed, a rare moment of seriousness crossing his face. "So what are you actually looking for, Ari? If the 'doctor' isn't it, what is?"
Areum looked at the condensation on her glass, her voice softening. "I want someone who doesn't barge into my privacy. Someone who takes the lead when I'm tired, who cares for me without keeping a tally of 'favours' or making it a performance for an audience."
She looked up at Jin, her eyes earnest. "I want a man who isn't afraid to baby me when I'm falling apart, but who treats me as a total equal when I'm standing strong. Someone who doesn't have a bruised ego if I make a better decision or if I'm better at something than he is. A partner. Not a project, not a fan, and not a therapist, but can be all of those as well when required."
The table went quiet. The ambient noise of the restaurant seemed to fade into the background.
Jin didn't make a joke. He didn't mock her. He just sat there, his fingers tapping a slow, thoughtful rhythm against the tablecloth. For years, they had been partners-in-crime. He had been the one to hold her hair back when she was sick, the one to fix the cafe's plumbing at 3 AM, the one to lend her shoulders when she cried over her ex, and the one to fight off her bad moods with sheer arrogance and humour.
But as he listened to her list, a cold knot of doubt formed in his chest. Am I like that? he wondered. Do I treat her as an equal, or do I just take care of her because I like being the one in control? He knew he could be loud, and he knew his ego was his biggest shield. Could he be the man who stepped back and let her lead without feeling diminished? He had always thought he knew Areum better than anyone, but in this moment, looking at her under the expensive crystal chandeliers, he realised he was terrified of the answer.
"That'... quite a list," Jin finally said, his voice unusually quiet. "A man like that... he'd have to be pretty sure of himself."
"He would," Areum agreed, watching him closely. "But I think he exists."
Jin took a long sip of his wine, his mind racing. He was the one who had always looked out for her, but for the first time, he wondered if he was actually the one she was describing—or if he was the one standing in the way of her finding it.
