Chapter 9- The Envelope
I bent down and picked the letter up. I looked around me, but no one was there. I went down the stairs and looked around me once again, and no one was there. I opened the folded sheet of paper, and there were three words written on it: Keep it safe. Who left me this letter? Keep what safe? I picked up the small black box from the ground and opened it. The device that she worked on was inside that box. What should I do now? I took the letter, and the black box, and went inside. I locked the door and went up the staircase to think about this. I found a long hallway with many rooms on both sides, I opened the first room that caught my eye, and went inside.
It was a bedroom, I sat on the soft bed and stared at the black box. I can't believe that this is happening, she was on the other side of that wooden door. Those gang members must've kidnapped her, but how did they know where my mansion was? It was all my fault, I shouldn't have told her to get out when I knew it wasn't safe for us both. Oh god, I'm such a horrible person. I can't think of anything right now; my brain was shutting down so are my eyes. I didn't sleep at all. I can't just sleep knowing she's in danger. My thoughts went wild, I was overthinking everything. I kept visioning different situations that may have happened. Although I just met her, still I'm responsible for whatever has happened to her. Why did you tell her to leave Lyn? Why?
I closed my eyes, but I couldn't do the same to my mind. I just can't stop thinking about what happened. This is all my fault, I should've known that we were in danger. She told me a couple of times about those guys, but I didn't listen. Those guys weren't the ones who kidnapped her, because if they were, then why would they leave me the device? Their main purpose was to get the device from her, so if they were the ones who kidnapped her they would've taken the device too. Who did this?
I pushed myself backward and felt the cold sheets of the bed holding me. It was a matter of seconds and I found myself living with my nightmares. All I saw was her, they were pushing her into the woods. I ran like the wind to prevent anything bad from happening to her, but all I did was peak through the trees, and see them murdering her. They both held sharp knives in their hands and walked up to her. She was crying, she tried to free herself from the ropes that she was tied with, but she couldn't. Her eyes met mine, she wanted me to save her, but I couldn't. It didn't take long for them to notice me, they came for me too. I ran deep into the woods as they followed me. I tripped on a rock, and I fell on the mud. They were all encircling me, and she was with them. She came up to me holding a knife, she looked at me and inserted the knife deep into my gut.
"No, no, I wanted to save you," I shouted.
I opened my eyes briskly and pushed myself up. It was a nightmare, it was just a nightmare. I was sweating, it was a rough nightmare. I slid through the bed and walked up to the door that was on the side. I assume this is the bathroom. I opened the door, and I wasn't wrong, it was indeed the bathroom. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and saw the sweat on my forehead. I located the washbasin in the huge white bathroom. I opened the mixer tap and washed my face with cold water. I went down the stairs, and a noise caught my attention. I looked around, but no one was there. The mansion was huge, it would be impossible for me to follow the noise.
Great, now they're here to kill me. This was a terrible decision, why did I even go into the woods?
"Is anyone there?" I shouted.
I heard footsteps coming my way, my ears weren't lying. I waited for them to show up, the footsteps were getting closer and closer. My heart was beating faster and faster with each footstep, the nervousness scale was at a hundred. She was right in front of me. She was an old lady. She was wearing a black attire. Who is she? Why is she here? No one told me that another person will be living with me. Before I unattached my lips to ask, the words departed her lips.
"Good morning Mr Lyn." The maid said.
"Good morning," I replied as I exhaled heavily releasing all my nervousness to the atmosphere. "I'm sorry aunt, but who are you? And how did you know my name?" I added.
"Oh, it's okay. I'm your maid sir. Every person I work for, the company usually sends me some background info. So yeah."
"Oh, that makes sense."
"Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine."
"Your breakfast is ready, so why don't you have a seat in the dining room."
"Alright, thanks."
"I'll be in the kitchen if you need me."
"Wait, can you guide me to the dining room?"
"Oh, sorry, my fault. Follow me."
She walked me through the long hallway and then stood in front of a closed door.
"After you." She said.
I opened the door by sliding it to the left and saw the most luxurious dining room I've ever seen in my life. I mean this is fancier than all the old classic movies that my family and I used to watch, wow! The view from there was breath-taking, the tall white windows were all around the room. The entire city was right in front of me. The dining table was located right in the middle of the room. The breakfast was perfectly organized on the table. Holy shit, this is literally a movie, not a real-life dining room.
"Do you need anything else sir?" She asked.
"Nope, thank you," I answered.
"My pleasure."
"Another thing," I called her back.
"Yeah?" she replied.
"Your good name?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, I should've introduced myself. I'm Elis."
"It's okay, more like I should've asked."
"It's not your fault, I'll be in the kitchen."
"Alright."
She went back to the kitchen as I enjoyed the beautiful view of the city from my window. I drank my freshly squeezed orange juice, while I ate my fancy omelet. This was my first time eating an omelet, it was delicious. I always used to wonder what it tastes like. I was enjoying the rich life, I have to admit that it's really different than the hell that I've been living in, and I'm loving every single minute of it. Although I tried and tried to distract myself from thinking of her and my family, I just couldn't and just when I forgot about it all for a second, I remembered how my life changed overnight.
I went back to the bedroom, closed the door, it was just me and my misery now. My thoughts made the white walls, black. Why? Why do I have to suffer, while everyone here is living their best lives? How is this fair? Breathing was a hard task to do, I was in a state where I just couldn't even move from the cold ground that I laid on. I couldn't feel my bones, I couldn't feel my heart beating, I just don't know how I transformed from being optimistic to this, in just a matter of seconds. Am I bipolar? I was just numb. I was screaming from the inside, but I just couldn't release that rage. I was imprisoned by own thoughts, rage, and pain. I couldn't even cry.
I kept remembering how I'm stuck in here with all these problems, and that only made my state worse. After what felt like hours, the tears slid down my face. That bitter taste of those tears made me feel alive again, I can now feel that I'm shattering slowly. I can now feel that the ground feels warmer than hell. This parade continued throughout the day, I kept on crying till I felt pressure holding my nerves, and a headache affecting my head. I just couldn't stop it. For the very first time, I feel weak. I feel used. How will I get myself out of this trap? How?
I crawled my way to the bathroom and laid there for a while alongside my thoughts. How did all of this happen? It was all my fault. I shouldn't have signed the contract. I should've just run away. No, no, don't do this to yourself, Lyn, this is not your fault. This is a game that's beyond you, it's way bigger than a contract.
My skin was crying, my soul was silent for a bit, I think I just got tired of screaming silently. I don't know what to do to release all these emotions. I'm just tired of acting as if everything is okay, and that I'm happy because it's not okay. Without feeling my body, I fell asleep. I opened my eyes and felt the bathroom ground touching my skin. Oh god, I slept in the bathroom. It wasn't a nightmare. I can't continue this thing anymore. I can't handle it. I picked myself up and washed my face as I looked at my misery in the mirror. What is happening to me? Why did I get to this level? Seeing my reflection in the mirror made me cry even more. I started my day with tears, I guess these are my mornings now.
"Lyn? Are you up? Come have breakfast." Shouted the maid.
My silence was the answer. I just didn't want to eat. I walked up to the bed and threw myself on it. I stared at the white ceiling, thinking about my misery. I felt needles attacking my abdomen. I cried and cried, but nothing changed. Mornings started with tears, nights ended with headaches and numbness. That was just my life for that entire week. I would go downstairs, have breakfast, then go back up and start the same parade over and over again. I felt helpless. I couldn't help myself. Another week started with the same mornings and nights, it was week two now, with the same misery. The only change that I saw were the dates on the clock, that's it.
I tried every single thing for that entire week, but they all failed miserably. That week passed by too, but my misery never did. It was week three now, my mornings changed now, I don't start them with tears anymore, I start them by punching the wall. Every sunshine, I punch a different wall, just to feel like I released a part of my emotions. I would shape each negative thought into each of the walls, and then I would punch them as hard as I possibly can. That didn't work either, that week passed by just like the previous ones.
It was the fourth week now, and I just want the oxygen that leaves my lungs to not come back. What's the use of the oxygen that I'm breathing if I don't feel alive anymore? The rage increased each week, the thoughts became darker and darker, I couldn't stop them nor was I able to handle them. The fourth week passed just like the others, nothing new.
The fifth week visited my depression, it was a special visit because it's what sparked the change. I woke up one day on the bathroom floor, didn't cry, I looked for a razor and it didn't take me long to find it. I was losing my mind, I didn't feel like myself. I took the razor and slid it across my skin freeing all my emotions, thoughts, rage, and darkness. I felt free through the pain. As I was staring at my blood painting the white ground, red, I realized what I just did. It's like I was drunk or high for a moment. I felt like I was in a coma, I didn't realize what I was doing until I saw the blood on the bathroom floor.
What are you doing Lyn? What have you done? I was breathing heavily, as my heart kicked my skin. I took a couple of tissues and pressed hard enough on the wound. The blood just didn't stop. It was like a waterfall of blood. A few moments later, the blood stopped, but my shock didn't. My head was light, I was dizzy, I couldn't concentrate on anything. I felt as if the world was moving way to fast and I just can't focus. I tried to locate the bed through the chaos of things moving, and I did. I laid on the bed, and in seconds I was in the best dream with the best people, my family.
I woke up the next day feeling fresh. What happened last night was scary, and it woke me up. I decided to fight this whole thing. I won't just surrender. I'm a fighter. I was raised to fight, my whole life I've been fighting, this was just another round. Alright, a new day with new thoughts and a new mind, you better move your ass. As I was about to enter the bathroom to wash my face, the doorbell rung. I ran as quickly as I can to open the door. I was waiting for a sign that could lead me to her or to them, and this may be the thing that I'm waiting for. I opened the door, and I was disappointed. She wasn't there nor were they there, but another envelope was waiting for me to open it.
