Chapter 50 - Hard Goodbyes

A week later, the garage was bustling as usual, but today there was an extra layer of excitement. Ethan had been staying around a bit longer than planned, his days spent showing Rev and Jinx the ropes of tuning cars with the unique techniques from the UK. Dax and Erin, however, had spent their morning in a slightly different way.

In the quiet of the office, Erin had walked in to check on something, only for Dax to pull her close, their lips meeting in a kiss that had slowly escalated into something deeper, more lingering. Neither of them had intended to, but when they found themselves wrapped in each other's arms, the world outside the office seemed to blur. They finally pulled apart, breathless, both of them smiling in a way that spoke volumes without needing words.

"I should probably stop distracting you," Erin whispered, her forehead leaning against his.

Dax chuckled softly, his hand brushing through her hair. "If I had it my way, you'd distract me every day."

Her heart fluttered a little, and she smiled, her eyes softening as she looked up at him. "Maybe we should get back to the others."

Dax nodded, but before they left, he leaned in for one more quick kiss, one that was teasing yet full of warmth. "You're right. But you always have a way of distracting me."

Erin laughed, the sound light and carefree, and she felt the tension of the past few weeks slip away in that simple moment. "Well, you're welcome."

When they emerged from the office, the sounds of Rev and Jinx talking excitedly could be heard from across the shop floor. Ethan had brought a bit of the UK's car culture with him, and the others were eager to learn.

Dax wrapped an arm around Erin's shoulder as they walked over to join the group. Rev and Jinx were crouched next to a Subaru, their attention completely on Ethan as he explained something about the finer points of tuning exhaust systems in a way that was different from the usual approach they used in LA.

"Okay, so you're telling me that the UK way uses these special headers that..." Jinx started to say, his voice filled with curiosity.

"Exactly," Ethan replied with a grin. "It's all about the exhaust flow and how you get the best sound while not compromising performance. It's like getting the perfect balance of power and beauty in one tune."

Rev raised an eyebrow. "Man, I gotta say, I thought we were all about performance first, but you've made me reconsider a bit."

Erin glanced at Dax, a playful look in her eyes. "Looks like our boys might be turning into car tuning philosophers."

Dax smirked. "Maybe they'll be the next big names in tuning. You never know."

They all laughed together, the atmosphere light as the conversation turned from tuning techniques to more general topics, laughing about different builds, joking about past projects, and tossing ideas for new jobs coming into the shop. Despite their usual seriousness when it came to cars, today felt a little different.

It wasn't just about the cars or the work. There was a new sense of camaraderie, of people from different places and backgrounds coming together, learning from each other, and growing together.

Rev and Jinx were more engaged than ever, soaking up Ethan's knowledge like sponges, while Dax and Erin found themselves watching the exchange with content smiles. Dax leaned over to her, his voice low. "I'm glad he came back into your life."

Erin glanced up at him, the smile on her lips soft and sincere. "Yeah, me too. I didn't expect things to feel... right again, but with Ethan here, it's like we're all part of something bigger. And it feels good."

Dax smiled, his hand brushing against hers for a brief second. "Yeah, it does. I think it's exactly what we needed."

As the day wore on and the crew continued to work, Erin realised that it wasn't just about the cars anymore. It was about the people they were becoming and the bond that was slowly forming among them all. With Dax, Jinx, Rev, and now Ethan, Erin felt like everything was finally coming together, not just for the business, but for the family they had built.

A few days later, the garage had a quieter vibe. Rev and Jinx were busy working on a car in the far corner, discussing the finer points of turbo setups while Dax and Erin worked together on another customer's car, the hum of the engine providing a soft background noise. But despite the usual banter of the shop, there was an underlying tension that Erin couldn't shake.

She had spent a lot of time over the past few days with Ethan, catching up on old memories, learning about his travels, and laughing about their past. But she knew what was coming. Ethan had been hinting for the last couple of days that his trip was nearing its end, and today, she could see it in his eyes, the inevitable hanging in the air between them. They stood together outside the garage, just as the sun was beginning to set. The sky was painted with soft oranges and purples, and the city lights began to flicker on in the distance.

Ethan leaned against one of the cars parked outside, arms crossed, watching Erin with a look that was a mixture of warmth and sadness. "Erin," he started, his voice a little softer than usual, "I've been meaning to talk to you about something."

She knew where this was going. She straightened up, trying to keep her emotions in check. "Yeah?"

"I've made my decision," Ethan said, taking a deep breath. "It's time for me to head back to the UK. I've been away too long, and I've got work waiting for me back there. But, before I go, I wanted to make sure you're okay. I want to know you're safe, that you're well."

Her heart tightened in her chest. She knew it was coming but hearing it out loud made everything real. She tried to force a smile, but it felt strained. "I'm fine, Ethan. Really. I'm in a good place."

His gaze softened, but there was a hint of concern in his eyes. "I'm glad to hear that. But honestly, I've been worried about you. I didn't want to leave and wonder what would happen to you. You've been through so much, and I... I don't want to leave you again thinking you're not happy."

Erin's throat tightened, and she took a small step forward, her hands instinctively gripping the edge of the car. "Ethan, you don't have to worry about me. I've got Dax, and Jinx, and Rev. I've got the crew. This... this place has become my home."

Ethan nodded, but his expression remained conflicted. "I know, and that's what makes this harder. But I want you to promise me something."

Erin frowned, trying to read his face. "What?"

"That you'll never lose sight of yourself. That no matter what happens here, you'll keep going, keep chasing whatever it is that makes you happy."

She swallowed hard, her chest tightening at his words. She had heard them before, from Jamie. It felt too much like a goodbye, but this time, it wasn't the same. Ethan wasn't the one who was gone, but the weight of his words carried the same emotional punch.

"I won't forget, Ethan. I promise," Erin said, her voice thick with emotion. She could feel the lump in her throat threatening to choke her, but she fought to hold it together.

Ethan smiled faintly, but there was a sadness to it. "You know, you could come with me. You've got a place in the UK if you want it. I'm sure there's so much we could do together."

Erin's heart jolted at the suggestion. She had always loved the idea of going back home, of living a life without the heavy weight of the past looming over her. But now, her life was different. It wasn't just about her anymore.

She shook her head, forcing a small smile. "I can't. This... this is where I belong now. I've built something here. With Dax. With the guys." She paused, swallowing hard. "And I've found something I didn't even know I was looking for."

Ethan searched her face, his brow furrowed. "But... you can't be sure about that. Not yet. I mean, you don't know what the future holds."

Erin hesitated, her thoughts rushing in different directions. She glanced toward the garage, knowing Dax was inside, probably talking to Rev or Jinx, making plans for the next big job. But in that moment, all she could think about was him.

Her life had changed so much in such a short time. Dax had become a part of her world that she hadn't expected, but it was a part of her that she couldn't imagine leaving behind. He had supported her when she needed it most, and even now, with everything that had happened between them, he was still there. That was something real. Something stable. Something worth fighting for.

"I'm sure, Ethan," she finally said, her voice firm. "This is my home now. With Dax. With the people who care about me."

Ethan sighed, nodding slowly. "I get it. I just... I had to make sure, you know? I had to ask. I never really got to say goodbye to Jamie properly. And... I didn't want to leave and not know what was going on with you."

Her heart clenched at the mention of Jamie. "You don't have to worry about me, Ethan. I've got my own life now. And I'll never forget what we had. But I'm not the same person I was when Jamie died. I've changed."

Ethan smiled, his eyes a little misty. "I know. You've always been strong, Erin. Even when you didn't know it. And I'm proud of you. I'm glad you're okay."

She forced a smile, blinking away the tears that threatened to spill. "Thanks, Ethan. You've always been like a big brother to me. I don't think I'd be here without you, or Jamie."

"I'll never forget either of you, Erin," he said softly, his voice full of sincerity.

There was a long, quiet pause as they both just stood there, looking at each other. Erin felt the finality of the moment settling over them like a heavy cloud. She didn't want him to go, didn't want to lose that connection with someone who had been there for her in the darkest times. But this was her life now. And as much as she would miss Ethan, she had a new path ahead of her.

With a sigh, Erin finally spoke, her voice quiet but resolute. "Take care of yourself, Ethan. And thank you. For everything."

He nodded, giving her one last smile before turning to head back to his car. Erin watched him go, her chest heavy, but she didn't move. Not yet. She stayed there for a long time, staring after him, before finally turning toward the garage.

When she stepped inside, Dax was already there, his back to her as he worked on a car. He didn't look up when she entered, but she could see the muscles in his shoulders tense as if he already knew she needed him.

Without a word, she walked over to him, and he immediately turned, wrapping his arms around her. It was as if the world outside didn't matter, and for a moment, Erin allowed herself to let go of the weight that had been hanging over her.

"I'm here," Dax whispered, his voice steady and comforting.

Erin nodded against his chest, the tears she had been holding back finally spilling over. She didn't say anything. She didn't need to. Dax held her, letting her cry, letting her be. And in that moment, Erin knew that no matter where the future took her, she had everything she needed right here, with him.
