chapter ten // doubtful concert
I took a deep breath in as the intro of my song, Copper, started to play. I was still nervous, thinking I'd mess up or forget my own lyrics.
The lights slightly dimmed as the melodic synth blasted through the speakers, and the bass line kicked in, the queue for me to start singing. The song went though with almost no flaws, but nothing I couldn't fix.
I bowed as I finished the last note on the song, people clapping and cheering. I laughed and took in a shaky breath.
"Good evening, Toronto! You guys look to happy and energetic, only if you could see me shaking from stage fright." I cackled to the mic, and the crowd laughed along with me.
"Wow, the Internet is right, Canada is so much nicer than the U.S. Who's excited for Twenty One Pilots this fine night?!" I yelled out into the mic, and the crowd screamed in excitement. I could feel the positive energy rattling off of them.
"Wow, you people are really damn loud. Well, I'm Doubt, or Hayden, I don't really mind which you call me. I'm twenty-three, Sagittarius and I like music." I introduced myself and I accidentally bent my finger that I sprained from when I met, no, rammed into Josh. I hissed in pain into the mic and everyone looked over at me, confused.
I smiled sheepishly, "Sprained my finger. I ran away from a guard my first performance, ya know. Ran into Josh? I'm sure you all know that story by now." Someone people cheered and others laughed while others didn't react.
I sat on the stool that was in front of the mic stand. The whole theatre looked a lot bigger now, and I took in another shaky breath.
"This song is called Arsenic. Any chemists out there will know what arsenic is. I'm going to get the sad and depressing one out of the way, so we can get energized, okay?" I said into the mic and people cheered, loud enough his time for me to cover my ears.
"I don't want to know what any of you sound like in bed, Jesus Christ." The crowd erupted with laughter, and I quickly reconstructed myself. I took a deep breath in and started to strum the notes off of my guitar, closing my red. I started to sing the sad and quiet song and I couldn't see what the crowd was doing.
Once the song ended, everyone was quiet and I was a little confused. After a moment, the crowd started to clap and I smiled. I stood and did a sarcastic curtsy.
"I just wrote that song, this was my first time actually performing it, I'm glad I didn't forget the lyrics." I heard a few people laugh loudly and I laughed along with them.

"Well, see you all on the flip side. Wait, I like that, I'm going to us that now. You all inspired me! If any of you want to take a photo or something, I'll be near the front doors." I yelled into the mic and the intermission started. The crowds got up and started to leave to get merchandise and foodstuff.
I walked backstage with my water bottle and guitar, hoping to get access to the pit for the rest of the concert. I'd have probably just stay backstage for security reasons and watch from there, but what's the fun in that? I grabbed my light blue pullover hoodie that was hung up and I slipped it on, my hands in the front pocket
I walked through the backstage towards the front. I accidentally bumped a crew mate I've seen before. He dropped a couple playing cards; a jack of spades, ace of clubs, nine of diamonds, and a couple more that were flipped over. I immediately went to the ground and helped pick them up and the backstage helped grumbled.
"You know what, do you want to do this? I'm really tired right now, and I don't want screaming fans around me." He rubbed his eyes once we stood back up. I held all the cards and I nodded, gleefully. I had seen some crew members walk around with them for the past few shows and they gave them to random fans.
I left the backstage and walked towards the open area, hearing a lot of people talking. I slipped the cards into my pocket and I stood near the front, like I said I would.
I took about 20 photos before I checked my phone and realized the intermission was about to end in fifteen minutes. I scrambled around and gave the cards to every forty people I saw.
I walked towards the back and I sat on the floor crosslegged near the open area to the stage. The strong bass and buzzing blared through the speakers that belonged to HeavyDirtySoul. Tyler was standing near the entrance and I looked up towards him and smiled.
"Have fun, they're an energetic crowd." I yelled, barely able to hear my own speech. Tyler had his skeleton zip up hoodie on and I couldn't tell if he said 'thanks a lot' or 'Frank's hot sauce'.
Josh started to drum and I could barely see but I internally cringed, "The drums! Jesus Christ, Josh, you're gonna kill them, I swear."

The concert ended and it was really rowdy, and about one hundred people were waiting for the men to come outside. People were outside singing, and I had a great idea. I walked in front of them, where the security guards were. One of the guards tried to put me back behind the barrier but I pulled out my pass. Her mouth formed a small 'o' and she went on her way.
"Hey, let me conduct you. This will rock, and you'll be the first group to see me sing horribly offkey." I asked the few dozen people who were singing, and they looked at each other and then nodded.
"Which song? I know most of them, I think. Most of them I don't know off by heart, but the ones I like a lot, I do. Just not most of Regional, don't hurt me." Some people gasped playfully and I smiled, rolling my eyes.
"How about Lane Boy, it's a fan favourite?" A guy yelled out and I nodded. That's one of them that I knew most of the lyrics to, but some I didn't really figure out.
"Sure, that would be great. Okay, one, and two, and–!" I sang along with them and it was really fun. We sang for over an hour (at least that's what it felt like) and I got to learn 3 songs from Regional at Best; Ruby, Forest and Slowtown.
When they came out, I was sitting on one of the girls hood of her car, singing my heart out to Stressed Out, and most people were either singing or trying to replicate the tune, since my phone speaker was too quiet.
Screams filled the air and drowned out my voice. "I wish we..." I stopped singing and I got off of her car, sliding off the black Prius.
"Thanks for letting me stand on your car, Carina." I whispered into the cars owners ear. I waved and headed into to sign a few things that some people wanted me to. I slipped the people who didn't have anything for me to sign, making my way down the line.
Stressed Out was still playing and it faded into Ode to Sleep, making me smile and I started to rap the first verse, not very well I must say. It was still one of them I didn't really know, since it was so fast.
I kept rapping horribly as I walked along, signing things a few guys and girls wanted me to sign and take photos. Even though I have time for people to come and take photos, I still took some. Tyler and Josh started at the other side, making their way towards me.
"You do have an amazing voice, just saying." One of the boys pulled me into a hug and whispered in my ear, making me blush. He wasn't much younger than I was, maybe nineteen or twenty.
"Oh, thank you so much! I've been through so much lately, you don't even want to imagine, so thank you." I gave him a kiss on the cheek and he pursed his lips, his cheeks flaring red. It slowly grew into a smile as he handed me my EP album the vendors here were selling to sign and I moved on to the next person.
The fast part of Ode was coming and stopped signing one girls thing and I looked up at one of the girls in front of me. I took my phone from my pocket, and turned it up. The electronic part was just starting and I had to think fast.
"Rap battle?" I asked and she nodded, her smile gleaming.
"Let's do this." I yelled and we started to rap. She was much better and faster than me, but she annunciated a lot of the words. I was a bit and slurred and messed up most of the words and I was slurred a lot of my words together and was a half second slower.
I took advantage of me being a bit slower and I broke off into a higher harmony, making it seem echoy. She looked at me, with wide eyes as she slowed down and I smirked as I kept going.
I ended the song and I I added a little 'umph' at the end of four and backed up, my arms out, moving my hands up and down. I looked at her, and pulled her into a hug. She returned it laughing.
"You were better than me, don't worry. I did only break off into a harmony because I was stupidly jealous." I whispered to her, and smiled.
"I had a lot of fun with that, thank you." She said, and her friend putting an arm around her neck, whispering about probably just happened.
I finished my signings and I headed into my bus. I turned on the lights and felt a slight pang of loneliness, missing the first time I was ever in a tour bus, sharing with them.
