Chapter 20

Jesse refused to leave Lorelei's side as she got ready. She changed out of the towel and dried her hair. Jesse lingered by the doorframe, watching her. The heat rushed to Lorelei's cheeks whenever she thought about her panic attack. Jesse did not mention anything about it, but he refused to take his eyes off Lorelei. Was he afraid she was going to panic again?

"Where are we going?" Lorelei asked for the third time.

"It's a surprise, baby girl," he said.

He gave her the same response every time she asked. The corner of Lorelei's lips lifted into a smile when she thought about what Jesse may have planned. She finished putting on her lip gloss before wrapping her arms around Jesse's waist. He pulled her in close and kissed the top of her head.

"I love you," Jesse said.

"I love you more."

"Not possible."

Jesse kissed her temple again before letting go. Lorelei grabbed her jacket and purse before following Jesse out of the hotel room. He had a crushing grip on her hand and kept his hold on her while they got into the taxi. He gave an address to the driver, which meant nothing to Lorelei as this was her first time in Vancouver.

"Are you going to tell me where we are going now?" she asked.

Jesse chuckled. "You're so impatient."

"I'm just always curious."

"That's how you ended up with me."

Jesse winked, and Lorelei giggled. It made her think back to finding Jesse's profile when Molly had her download the dating app. Only erotic and kinky pictures piqued her interest, and she liked his profile. She thought she would just have a few kinky experiences. Now, she was with the love of her life.

Lorelei leaned closer to her window when they pulled into a parking lot. There was a large glass dome that was surrounded by greenery. It looked like a botanical garden. Lorelei had grown up in downtown Toronto her whole life, so she only saw gardens like this when she traveled.

She did not notice that Jesse had gotten out of the car until he came around to her side and opened the door. She took his hand as he helped her out of the car. Her eyes were focused on the top of the glass dome.

"What is this place?" she asked.

"Bloedel Conservatory," he said. "I used to love coming here on field trips as a kid. I always found it peaceful, so I thought it may help you feel better."

Lorelei bit down on her lip. There was still a slight tightness in her chest from the panic attack. From experience, she knew that it would be gone in a few hours. Jesse saw her hesitation and gave her a reassuring smile.

"You don't have to tell me what happened until you're comfortable," he said.

Lorelei nodded. Jesse grabbed her hand, and they walked toward the dome. Lorelei was trying to take in all the details of the bushes, trees, and flowers as they went down the path. She wondered why Jesse would not let her examine the beautiful plants if he wanted her to relax.

Her jaw dropped when they entered the glass dome. It was warm, and there was the sound of birds. Plants that Lorelei had never seen before filled the dome. There was a path leading around the plants. She smiled when she saw a colourful bird soar through the air.

Jesse grabbed Lorelei's hand. He pulled her down the path. Lorelei glanced over at him to see that he was watching her instead of looking at the scenery. She raised a brow.

"What?" she asked.

"You're gorgeous," he said.

Lorelei shook her head and lightly punched Jesse in the shoulder. He yanked her closer and wrapped his arm around her waist. She rested her head on his shoulder as they walked down the path. There were only a few other people in the Conservatory. They walked over the small bridge, and Jesse pulled her to the side.

He put one hand on Lorelei's hip, and his other hand brushed a piece of hair behind her ear. Lorelei smiled as she looked up at him. His blue eyes, which she had fallen in love with, were staring at her lips. She put her hands on his hard chest. He smiled and a dimple formed on his one cheek.

Lorelei's heart fluttered in her chest when she thought back to the day she met Jesse in person.

"I'm so lucky to have you, beautiful," he said softly.

The heat rushed up to her cheeks as embarrassment washed over her. An hour ago, she was on the bathroom floor having a panic attack at the thought of Jesse leaving her. She was so consumed with the thought of Jesse leaving her for Jody that she thought of the worst-case scenario.

Lorelei broke eye contact with Jesse. He curled his fingers deeper into her hip when he could sense her uneasiness.

"Can you tell me what is wrong?" he asked. "You know that communication is key."

Lorelei let out a deep breath. Would he think that she was acting ridiculous?

Jesse grabbed her chin with his thumb and his forefinger. He forced her to look at him. She bit down on her lip.

"Talk to me," he said. "You don't have to tell me what caused the panic attack, but I want you to tell me what is making you so uncomfortable around me. This isn't the Lorelei that I know. You're usually so carefree."

Her chest tightened as she struggled to breathe. Tears pricked at the back of her eyes. She was afraid to blink. She did not want to start sobbing in the Conservatory.

"I'm just afraid you will leave me," Lorelei said. "I don't think I would be able to handle that heartbreak."

"Leaving is the last thing I want to do, baby girl," he said. "I see myself spending my whole life with you."

Lorelei bit her lip and took a sharp breath to push away the tears. Jesse pulled her closer and kissed her. It was one of those dominating kisses that Lorelei loved. She moaned when his tongue swiped along her bottom lip. She grabbed fistfuls of his shirt as she parted her lips. Her mind went blank while Jesse was kissing her, and the fear of him leaving was gone. The old Lorelei would be horrified that she was making out with a man in public. She and Matthew rarely kissed in front of people.

Lorelei's eyes remained closed when Jesse broke the kiss. Her lips tingled, and her heart was pounding. Jesse pulled her into his chest. He kissed the top of her head as he rubbed her back. They were silent for a moment, and Lorelei enjoyed the sound of the birds.

"You know," Jesse said. "They do weddings here."

Lorelei giggled as she pulled back. She took Jesse's hands in hers.

"What's with all this wedding talk on this trip?" she asked.

"I'm serious," Jesse said. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

"Really?"

"Of course. Would you be okay if I proposed?"

Lorelei's eyes went wide. She could not believe what she was hearing. Jesse wanted to marry her? Matthew wanted to marry her and then betrayed her. Would that happen again?

Jesse moved to get down on one knee. Lorelei shook her head and pulled him back onto his feet.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"My shoe is untied," he said.

Lorelei looked down to see that his laces were unraveled on his shoe. He winked before he went back down on his knee to tie his shoe. When he stood, he put his arm around Lorelei's shoulder, and they continued to walk down the path.

"I don't have a ring yet," Jesse said. "You've got to do it with a ring."
