Chapter One
"I want to have a drink," A pair of inhuman blazing eyes bored into mine, hungrily. "human."
Gasping for air, my eyes flew open in alarm. I almost believed that it was real, if not for the sheet of paper and textbooks placed in front of me.
Right, I'm at school again.
And it was just a dream.
I didn't even need to touch my forehead to know that I've been sweating for a long time. My head, my chest, my lips; they were all pounding hard inside of me.
What the hell was that?
This is the seventh time I'm going to pretend that this dream guy didn't actually try to win my heart.
After recollecting myself, I propped my elbow against the desk and bolted upright. I was really tempted to slap that guy though, even if it was just a dream, not going to lie.
And as silly as it sounds, I've been having dreams about the same vampire.
Want to know what kills me with suspense the most?
He approaches me with a mask in dreams, or what looks like a veil? I don't know for sure.
Apart from how disgusting this is, this looks like an indirect warning. One that I need to investigate further.
I need to be...more careful henceforth.
Not that it's that same dream I've been having my whole life, but it's just...ridiculous and terrifying. I mean, how can one dream of someone they've never met—or barely even met? Is that even possible?
Speaking of meeting, where did all those bloodsuckers run off to now?
I turned around and looked over my shoulder to see nothing but an empty class. And what I mean by empty, I mean no vampires. There were humans here, but the chances of our survival were very low. It'd only take a miracle for a human of twenty five years to roam the earth with a huge grin—which of course is never possible, even in the centuries to come.
Whatever.
As long as they keep their promise, I guess I just have to keep playing this game—
"I mean, look at me! He fell in love with me at first bite—can you believe that?" A girlish voice shouted from behind.
"Huh?" I raised an eyebrow and glared towards their direction, almost knowingly.
These girls.
"Are you stupid or what? He drank from three girls after you just now and you still won't drop the fact that he's a playboy." Someone else says, her hands clamped around her waist angrily. I recognized them. They were the five top human-girl-students that have been recognized and rewarded by the vampires for something I don't know and still don't think I'm willing to know.
And when I mean rewarded, I mean dashing their rugged fangs into their skins and claiming them as nothing but their bloodslaves aka blood containers. I mean, come on, you can do more than that to woo a girl!
"Drop it Sasha, you're just jealous he hasn't called you in a week." As if trying to make her point, she pointed to a pale scar across Sasha's shoulders. The wound looked like it had healed on it's own.
Lucky, she is.
"Shut up. I'm just telling you what you need to know, Naomi." Sasha gritted through her teeth while subconsciously covering the marked spot with her palms.
"Sure you are." Naomi grinned through her words.
"These girls are going to make me sick." I slung my backpack over my shoulders and without hesitation, headed towards the exit.
"Saffron!" The voice made me halt in my steps.
Saffron.
I've gotten used to the name anyways.
"Where are you running off to?" Sasha asks, a smirk slowly making its way to her pale eyes.
I narrowed my eyes, "Ever heard of a cuckoo's nest? Cause that's what I'm running from, right now."
I watched as she stomped her feet in displeasure while the other humans suppressed their laughter into amused giggles.
After minutes of listening to her empty threats, I turned the door's handle with a tired huff and almost dashed out without thinking twice.
Almost.
I swallowed down the aching fear in my throat when I saw vampires lingering around the hallway. I suddenly felt like a fly in the midst of huge cobwebs in an enclosed space. Just savoring their presence was slowly killing me—making it very hard for me to breathe.
Maybe I should turn back?
"Hey! You with the saffron scarf!"
"Are you serious?" I clenched my jaws and made my way to his direction, my head bowed low.
"Get these books to the boss," He says with a snicker and pointed to the stacked books besides him, "you know what to do, don't you?"
I nodded quickly and looked at him from the corner of my eyes. Stupid, selfish sucker. Don't tell me you're scared of your own freaking boss now. When his yellowish eyes drifted to mine, I pulled down the scarf, or at least pretended to, and wrapped my arms around the impossibly huge books.
I knew I should've quickened my place the moment I stepped out, now all the vampires are staring...hard.
The weight of the leathery books aren't even doing me any better. What a vampire would do with this amount of books, I do not know.
Isn't their so-called knowledge enough for them?
Even worse, why go to school...with humans as their toys?
I bit my lips as frustration took over me. I didn't sign up for distributing books to some goddamn boss of theirs.
The rule was clear; stay away from vampires.
How in the bloody world would I drop these books without dropping dead?
The dead end at the corner of the walls signified my last bus stop, one between life and death. Two opposite doors by the walls attracted my attention; which could I possibly choose?
'Go into the left one, that's the library. You can give the librarian the books and tell her that—'
'Nonsense! Those bloodsuckers would be all over the place! The right one seems like study room; perhaps his very own class! Now that all those suckers are all over the hallways, don't you think—'
'No! Don't listen to her, Ari! A study room is never a good place to be!'
"Hmm, the library's always occupied: I'm going with the study room, after all, I'd be very quick!"
'Eeh? I can't watch this!'
I shook my head and focused on the glassy door at my right side. Ari two seems right.
With an annoyed sigh, I twisted the knob and stalled my way through the incredulously large shelves. Books were littered here and there, stamped letters were sticking out of some weird looking envelopes and there were...drawings from one table to another.
Strange looking drawings.
Oof!
Something huge collided with my legs, making me lose my balance and almost fall flat on the floor, the books all tearing away from my grasp.
"Dang it, what was that?" I flinched from the sudden impact and stared down at my feet. But the moment I did that, that's when things slowly began to change for bad.
"Bodies..."
If there are bodies here, that means...
"Hey, human girl!"
I raised my head quickly, hoping to lock eyes with a human, but of course I was wrong.
The intensity of coldness and anger within the guy's eyes was enough to ring the bells behind my mind. An angry vampire is like an angry cat.
I did the first thing my mind could only come up with in this kind of situation—run!
