A bacterial illness that develops in some people who have strep throat.

Scarlet fever is most common in children five to 15 years of age.

Symptoms include a bright red rash that covers most of the body, a sore throat, and a high fever.

Pain circumstances: can occur while swallowing

Skin: peeling, red lines in skin folds, red rashes, red spots, or roughness

Whole body: fever or malaise

Also common: enlarged neck lymph nodes, nausea, sore throat, swollen and bumpy tongue that's red, or swollen tonsils

The signs and symptoms that give scarlet fever its name include: Red rash. The rash looks like a sunburn and feels like sandpaper. Red lines. The folds of skin around the groin, armpits, elbows, knees and neck usually become a deeper red than the surrounding rash. Flushed face. Strawberry tongue.

There is no vaccine. Prevention is by frequent handwashing, not sharing personal items, and staying away from other people when sick. The disease is treatable with antibiotics, which prevent most complications. Outcomes with scarlet fever are typically good if treated.
