Echotale Ending

Ending written by @Mugelbbub28

You stood there shocked.

'They're all offering me a piece of their soul. Including the ones who tried to kill me.'

You looked around the room. Most of them were waiting patiently. Others....seemed a bit on the opposite side.

You weighed your options.

Choose the very first Sans you ever met?

Or how about Mr Skelly McAxelton over here smiling creepily, his red eye boring into you, drumming his fingers on the side of his skull right next to the baseball sized hole in his head?

Slowly you began walking, passing by different versions of Sans, eyeing each one. You found yourself glancing back at one of them a few times though. You sighed and walked straight up to him. He looked confused.

You held out your hand, "Hey Pikachu, I choose you." In the background you could've sworn you heard someone say 'but that's my line'.

His eyes widened a bit in surprise before relaxing them and curving his mouth into a smirk.

"So be it then." He places his free hand gently on your chest.

"H-hey!" You were about to step back before you realized what he was doing.

"Relax, Doll," he makes a pulling motion with his hand and your already glowing soul appears in front of you. "I'm just patchin' up your soul." He places his greenish colored soul piece in the gap of your own [S/D] soul. He plucks a cancer stick from his back pocket and puts it between his teeth.

You glare at him in annoyance, you should've seen this coming.

"Why did I pick you?"

"Heh, you tell me! Too late to change your mind now, you're stuck with me, Dove." You puffed out your cheeks, 'is this payback for all the nicknames I gave him?' "Speechless eh? Am I just that breathtakingly handsome?"

"You really shouldn't test your limits, G."

"Ya sure?" He raises a bony hand to your chin.

"As the sea!" You stick your index finger up where his nose is supposed to be and shove forward making him stumble backwards flailing his arms like an angry bird to keep balance.

He accidentally slaps a grumpy version of Sans with a golden tooth and red clothing upside his head. He growls at him, G only stands up straight, his left eye flaring a bright yellow. Edgy Sans cowers back looking at the suddenly very interesting ground with a quieter growl than before.

You snort.

"Ahem." Inks' voice rings out behind you. Both your attentions are brought to him. "The decision has been made." You could hint a bit of sadness in his voice. Looking around you couldn't help but notice the disappointed expressions on all except a few Sanses who seem to be relieved or happy about your choice.

You also noticed your soul, brighter than before. G's green portion seemed to latch on like a web, filling the gap with green, then casting thin green lines across your [S/D] soul. You reached out and slowly pulled it to your chest, it returned with ease.

"There is no going back." Ink says.

The room is surprisingly quiet, even with the Papyrus version of Sans here. You decide to fill it, "So...what now?"

He smiles warmly, "Well, for starters . . . " he pulls his giant paint brush from his back, "it's time to say goodbye to the Multiverse," with a wave of it, all Sanses in the room vanish in small pixelated swirls leaving you, him, and G, "and say hello," he gives a swift flick of his brush and a cracked gray door with a faint, blue glow shining through the seams appears right in front of you, "to Echotale."

"Home sweet home." G says with a monotonous voice.

You smile sympathetically towards him.

Ink speaks up, "It may take some time and a lot of work but I'm sure you can fix this world. This universe may be able to be saved without Frisk believe it or not."

"Ink I-"

"NOPE!" He cuts you off.

"But I want to sa-"

"I HATE GOODBYES!" Your face fell. He chuckles, "And besides," he winks, "there's no such thing."

All of a sudden you and G are shoved through the door. You both wail in shock and land on the ground with a thud. You sit up, finding that you landed on top of G with you sitting on his back and him faceplant position. You blink a few times and struggle to hold back laughter. You just end up snorting in response.

'How the hell did we end up landing this way?'

He begins kicking and thrashing his arms and legs. You can't help it anymore and burst out laughing.

His screams and curses are muffled, further fueling your laughter.

"Ket uff meh!!" He manages to say.

"Alright, alright I'm going." You climb off his back and he lifts his head, his sockets empty. His cigarette somehow managed to stay intact between his teeth. 'Cause THATS logical.' You reach your hand out as if to help him up and take advantage of this golden opportunity. At the last second you stick a hand in each socket. There was a brief moment of silence before-

"What the F-" you pull out both hands and clasp one over Gs mouth.

"Language." He gives you a 'really' look, while you just make an innocent one. He sighs. "Okay, I'm sorry, here." You held your hand out towards him, he dismissed it and stood on his own. You scoffed playfully and you rolled your eyes, "Rude."

"You just stuck your HANDS in my EYES...now forgive me if I'm wrong but I'd call that 'rude'." He ruffles your hair, and you glare, trying to fix it.

Looking behind you, you noticed that the door was gone. "Guess there really is no way back."

He lit the cigarette with a lighter he pulled from his other back pocket. Smoke poured and swirled from his mouth, nose, eye sockets, and cigarette itself, filling the air with it's scent.

"For now, maybe." You coughed a little as some of it filled your lungs and itched at your throat. G noticed this, "Sorry, Doll, not quite used to the company." He waved the smoke away from you and took a few steps to the side. You both stayed silent. When he was finished, he dropped it on the snow and stepped on it, putting it out.

Snow.

You guys had landed in Snowdin.

Ha! The town who's name is literally a pun in itself.

[Your POV]

It's been 4 days since me and G returned to EchoTale.

It's called EchoTale for a reason, so G explained, because there was a major shift in certain areas of the Underground and Echoflowers grow everywhere, even overpopulating and eventually replacing the golden flowers that once grew in patches here and there.

We spent a day in each.

Day 1, Snowdin:

The snow is still, well, snow-like in texture and color and such, it's just warm instead of cold. How it hasn't melted yet is beyond me. G thinks it's the result of what's left of the cores magic.

The first half of the day, G explained how this world works and eventually after horsing around with "the power of friction" and trying to impress me with snowballs that caught flame if thrown hard enough, he explained who Frisk was in this world and that he and her had fixed it once before.

When she reset he was given a real soul and a door appeared for him to escape through. The reset malfunctioned on his end and sent him back here. Except this time, there was no Frisk to save the world.

He thinks that had something to do with me. But insists he doesn't really blame me and is grateful for the reset mishap, saying it's nicer being mostly alone than being in a loud, crowded underground or surface.

I call bull.

The rest of the day we explored Snowdin, occasionally pulling a snow related prank on one another.

Day 2, Waterfall:

The water is boiling hot, there are big dry areas where the Echoflowers grow in big patches. The heat from the water keeps the area especially warm. We tampered with the Echoflowers, trying to get a reaction out of them, any reaction. But nothing worked, they were so silent it was unsettling. G said Frisk was able to make them work. She sang to them and they responded.

He even made me sing.

It....was embarrassing.

Still no reaction though.

Day 3, Hotland:

The lava there is cool, literally. G about scared me to death when he jumped in, pulling me with.

We came across an empty lab.

We came across a lot of buildings on our journey...all were empty.

The underground isn't empty though, there are still plenty of monsters here and there...they're just...slowly vanishing.

There's these "hot spots" that spit out gusts of steam (no longer "hot" of course) which send things afloat in the air.

I shoved G in one as pay-back for the lava incident. The awkward angle he went up in had him tumbling and rolling in the air.

He wasn't very happy...

. . .

I forgot he could teleport.

Needless to say I was cold and wet for the rest of the night.

Day 4, Today:

We decided to spend another day in waterfall.

Here we are sitting back to back, hands at either side of us staring up at the artificial stars on the ceiling, which turned out to be these things G calls "save points" but only Frisk can use them.

Although it annoys me a little, I decide not to ask why he brings up Frisk so much. I feel it's kind of obvious though. She was able to save this world the first time around, she could save and reset in this world. So can I technically. Yet I lack the "determination" to use the save points. My words, not his.

I experimented with one of them first time we entered Waterfall and split up testing the Echoflowers. It somehow ended up on the ground so I was able to reach it.

Long story short: it hurt like hell, and my soul throbbed for a day and a half straight.

Being that a fragment of Gs soul is attached to mine, I don't know if he felt it too, but he insisted on staying by my side for that amount of time...so I can only assume so.

Aside from the pale yellow glow, these could pass as stars. Better than the rocks and/or painted-on stars in other universes I visited.

Occasionally through the night one of us would crack a bad joke.

It's been fifteen minutes since either of us has spoken, and its a comfortable silence too.

Finally G speaks up, "[Y/N]?"

"Hm?"

"Ya know . . . you never answered me."

I paused a second, unsure of what he was talking about.

"What do you mean?"

He sighs, "Well, right after I fused a part of my soul with yours I made a comedic remark you asked why you picked me, which I know you were just kiddin' around, but anyways-"

"-Maybe . . . " I giggle.

"Wait, what?! Grr, nevermind! But ANYWAYS, I said you tell me, but you never answered. I guess I should've expected it, that could easily be seen as rhetorical or sarcastic, but I truly ask you. Why me? Of all the Sans you could've chosen, you chose me. Heh, I'm not even a version of Sans, really, I'm-"

"That's just it though."

"...what?"

"That's why I chose you, G. You're not Sans. I've met enough versions of him to know that I didn't want to spend supposedly the rest of my existence with one. I like most of them and all but c'mon, I mean the dude's got problems! An example; he took part in creating you."

"Wh-"

"Chill, I'm kidding...I'm not that good at this sincerity thing..." I sigh, "you're different than them is all I mean. Each Sans is different from the last. But as I said, you aren't Sans. You're you. You're G. If anything, I should be grateful you accepted me. For all I know, you could've rejected me."

"I-"

"Please let me finish."

He growls under his breath. Under normal circumstances he probably wouldn't let me interrupt him this much, but I'm feeling awful mushy right now and need to get this over with, so he's gonna have to suck it up.

"You could've rejected me right then and there, and I would've accepted that. I honestly expected it. Kind of hoped it even. I've killed people, destroyed worlds. Hell, even though he's the one who swung the axe, made the killing blow, it was my fault you died. I can't really hate the guy for something I did."

"Hm . . ."

"And even though I did those things, and even though I'm not Frisk, I . . ."

He tensed a second but relaxed almost immediately. "[Y/N]."

I ignored him and kept going, " . . . I'm determined to save this world. No, not that kind of determined, just plain, old, regular determination. The motivation to do something. And I'm determined. I'm going to save this world. Or at least die trying."

I sigh again. "I guess that forever concluded my ushy mushy gushy speech, " another sigh, ". . . I'm . . . long overdue for a fresh start . . . to new beginnings . . .?

He chuckles, "Tsk, how embarrassin'."

Suddenly, whispers erupt all around us, making me jump slightly.

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

" . . . To new beginnings . . . "

We were silent for a minute or two just listening to the flowers we practically gave up hope on finally speak.

"I agree with the flowers." His voice is low and soothing.

I feel a surprisingly warm, boney hand land on top of mine.

Tears prick my eyes, making things ever so slightly blurred. And whether it was because of the flowers sudden change or G, god knows. Probably both, to be honest.

"And despite everything, Y/N . . . " he slowly slides his hand underneath mine and gently intertwines his fingers, "it's still you."

I couldn't help the tears that slid down my cheeks. I returned the gesture and squeezed softly.

"Thank you, G," I whisper barely loud enough for him to hear.

"Pfft, whatever floats your boat, Dove." I chuckle at the change in behavior and lay my head back so it lands on the back of his.

"Ya bonehead." I wince at how weak and cracked my voice came out as. He hums in response and tenderly runs his thumb back and forth along mine. We remain in comfortable silence like that and eventually fall asleep, still hand in hand.

No one knows what awaits us when we wake.

We just know we have to face it head on.

Fear? So be it. It strengthens us.

And besides, we're not going down this road alone, we have eachother.

As cheesy as that sounds, I'd have it no other way.

Tomorrow's a new day.

A day that won't be like the last.

A day of hope.

A fresh start.

A new beginning.

And from this day forward we'll still walk along a glowing blue path . . .

. . . but we'll never again hear the echo of yesterday.
