Chapter Two

Multiple figures were spat out onto the floor. I didn't have time to register what they looked like before they got up and pointed their weapons at us. I rushed forward towards one, my staff pointed forwards and Janie hiding behind me. Nikki, Bev, Sandi, and Toothifer all did the same, and when the smoke cleared, I looked at who I was threatening.

It was a boy, the same height as me, with white hair like mine, but short. He had bright blue eyes and pale skin, and he was wearing a blue hoodie identical to mine. He was wearing tattered leather pants with ribbons around the calves, and no shoes. He had a staff that looked exactly the same as mine, and he was pointing it at me. We blinked in sync, then simultaneously said, "Whoa." Behind the boy, there was a little boy who looked just like Janie, vest and hat and all, hiding behind his legs like Janie was hiding behind mine.

The boy and I both turned our heads at the same time to look at the rest.

Facing Nikki, there was a man just as tall as her, in red pants with suspenders and a large red coat with black fur trim, and a tall Russian hat, also black fur. He was pointing two large swords, very similar to Nikki's, at her. He had a long white beard.

In front of Bev, there was another bunny, same height, also holding boomerangs and with a small blond girl standing behind him who looked oddly like Seth.

Standing, or should I say hovering, before Sandi was a small golden man with short, spiky hair. He had golden robes and they were both really, really, similar.

I looked at Toothifer. He was in a fighting position, and across from him was a girl that looked just like him, with little girl fairies flying around her.

I looked back at the boy, my eyes narrowed. He did the same. "Who are you?" We demanded at the same time. "No, you first. Stop copying me! Would you quit that! If you don't knock that off this minute I will freeze you into oblivion!" We said in unison.

I glared at him and pushed Janie back at the same time he pushed the kid near him back. The frost on my hoodie crackled. "You are in our home turf, so I suggest you tell us who you are," I said icily, my voice hard.

"Jack Frost, bringer of winter, Guardian of fun."

"Shut up! Now tell me the truth." I took a step closer to him.

"That is the truth!"

"No, it isn't!"

"Why not?"

"Because I'm Jaclyn Frost, bringer of winter, Guardian of fun to the children of Htrae. Now tell me who you really are." The ground frosted under my feet as I stepped closer to him, putting my staff directly under his chin. His staff brushed my hoodie lightly and it frosted over where it touched me, spreading rapidly, but I brushed it off with my hand.

He looked surprised. "No one can touch my frost without getting hurt. Why can you?"

I growled. "Don't act like you're in charge here. Everyone knows women are the dominant gender for a reason. If you're Jack Frost, who none of of us have heard of, go talk to Maggie, the Woman in the Moon. She is the one who chooses all the Guardians," I hissed, then launched myself at him, getting my arm around his neck and twisting his arm behind him, pressing our bodies close. I walked him over to the beam of moonlight shining down on the 'G' inlaid in the floor. I whispered into his ear, "If you lied to me, you will pay. I promise you." Then I forced him to his knees and made him look up at Maggie.

He started talking. "Manny?"

"Show some respect, boy. That is Maggie, the Woman in the Moon, the one who gave us our immortality. Treat her as such." I gripped his shoulder tightly.

"Can I talk to Manny? The Man in the Moon?"

"There is no one of that name here. You'd best plead your case to Maggie and hope she takes pity on you." I felt a little harsh, but he was an intruder. He could very well be one of Pitchiana's illusions.

Maggie spoke to him, I could tell. He kinda spaced out, and my hand on his shoulder was the only thing keeping him upright. He blinked. "What happened to Manny?"

"There is no Manny. And since you aren't dead, I suppose you are who you say you are." I helped him up and shook his hand.

Maggie shone down on our clasped hands and spoke to both of us. You are very similar. Interesting. I suppose you are from the other dimension, with Earth and Manny, are you not, boy?

He nodded. "Yes, I am from Earth. Are we not on Earth?"

I looked at him oddly. "What is 'earth', other than soil? This is the planet Htrae."

"Earth is the planet I come from." He looked at me oddly.

"So, you're like an alien?"

"Shut up." He said, but not in a joking manner.

My light expression hardened and I scowled. My grip on his hand tightened to the point of almost breaking the bones, but Maggie made me loosen my grip. Jaclyn, do not harm him. You two must work together, and in the future, you will become very close.

"Close? Like best friends? With him?" I asked incredulously.

"Hey!"

No, close as in smndhsph

It sounded as if someone put a hand over her mouth.

Now is not the time, darling, a deeper voice resonated down, making Jack smile in relief.

"Hey Manny. What's going on?"

The others seemed to relax and began introducing themselves. I released Jack's hand and walked over to Janie. I picked her up and settled her on my hip like a small child, despite her being nine. "Janie, you alright?" I said.

The boy who came with Jack answered absentmindedly, "Yeah, I'm fine," at the same time as Janie.

I grabbed his shoulder and made him face me. "What's your name, kiddo?"

"Jamie Bennett."

Janie and I gasped. "But my name is Janie Benet!"

I thought for a moment. "How do you spell it?"

"J-A-M-I-E B-E-N-N-E-T-T."

"Okay Jamie. This is Janie Bennett. J-A-N-I-E B-E-N-E-T." I put Janie down and extended my hand to shake while Jack was still talking to Maggie and Manny.

Jamie looked at my hand cautiously before shaking quickly and pulling his hand back. I laughed lightly and shook my head. "I'm not going to hurt you." I balanced my staff and crouched on top of it like an owl. "Guardian of Fun, at your service." I did a mini bow, my sloppy bun flopping around.

Janie giggled and pushed my staff slightly. It started to tip over and I jumped off, catching it before it hit the ground. I pinched Janie's cheek and it turned bright red from my ice cold hand. She swatted my hand away and mock glared at me. "Jackie! I told you not to do that!" she whined.

I rolled my eyes and pinched her other cheek before drifting upside down, my sweatshirt falling up a little. My hair flew straight down, the tips touching the floor, and I snatched the brown ribbon I used to tie my hair back out of midair just before it touched the floor. I pulled it around my neck, under my hair, and tied it in a bow on top of my head, tilting it slightly to the side like a headband. I crossed my eyes and puffed up my cheeks, poking my thumbs into my ears and wiggling my other fingers. Janie giggled, and after a minute, Jamie joined in.

I glanced over at Jack, uncrossing my eyes, and he was still talking to Mabel and Manny.

Janie tugged in my sleeve. "Hey Jackie, can you sing? Please?"

I shook my head, not looking at her. I snuck a peek, to see her making Bambi eyes at me. Dang it! She knows I can never resist her Bambi eyes. Jamie did Bambi eyes too, and I mentally groaned. "Fine! But only because you did the Bambi eyes." I shot a menacing glare at them playfully. "What do you want me to sing?"

Janie jumped up and down and clapped her hands excitedly. "Ooh! Ooh! I know! Sing "Royals" by Lorde!"

"Aw, what? Not only do I have to sing, but I have to sing pop music? You can't even pick good music?" I sighed in resignation. "If I have to."

I grabbed my staff and jumped up on top of a ceiling beam. I started singing. My voice became loud and bold like the singer's.

"I've never seen a diamond in the flesh

I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies

And I'm not proud of my address,

In a torn-up town, no post code envy,"

I started dancing along to my singing, closing my eyes and getting into the zone. I forgot people were watching and listening, everything went away but the music. I danced on the beam, occasionally flipping or popping up into a handstand, still not looking. No one, not even Nikki, had ever heard me sing. Janie had once wormed it out of my that I kind of liked to sing, but she never got me to actually do it until now.

"But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom

Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,

We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.

But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your time piece.

Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.

We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).

It don't run in our blood,

That kind of lux just ain't for us.

We crave a different kind of buzz.

Let me be your ruler (ruler),

You can call me queen Bee

And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.

Let me live that fantasy.

My friends and I - we've cracked the code.

We count our dollars on the train to the party.

And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this,

We didn't come from money.

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom.

Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,

We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.

But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your time piece.

Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash

We don't care we aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals).

It don't run in our blood

That kind of lux just ain't for us

We crave a different kind of buzz.

Let me be your ruler (ruler),

You can call me queen Bee

And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.

Let me live that fantasy.

Oooh ooooh ohhh

We're bigger than we ever dreamed,

And I'm in love with being queen.

Oooooh ooooh ohhhhh

Life is game without a care

We aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).

It don't run in our blood

That kind of lux just ain't for us

We crave a different kind of buzz

Let me be your ruler (ruler),

You can call me queen Bee

And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.

Let me live that fantasy."

I opened my eyes and came back to reality. Everyone, including the moon, was absolutely silent. I clapped my hand over my mouth, eyes wide with surprise, and I slashed my staff in front of me, creating a cloud of snow that I used as cover to sneak away. I crept along the halls, using my staff to levitate along so as not to leave frost trails. I came across the door to my bedroom and swung it open silently, making my way in and sitting down in the massive bed in the middle of the room. I had a tendency of rolling and moving a lot while I slept, even before I was a Guardian, resulting in a lot of falling out of trees, so Nikki gave me this bed. I set my staff against the wall and laid down, curling up into a ball. I crawled under the covers and wrapped myself in the furry blue throw blanket, only leaving my nose sticking out. A light dusting of snow fell from the ceiling, coating the floor and everything else.

I closed my eyes, hoping Sandi gave me good dreams, if I actually managed to sleep.

The last thing I saw as I fell asleep was a thin stream of golden sand forming the beginning of a picture over my head. Or should I say, a dream?
