The Bee That saw a Flower
I edged away from Zara as she stared off into the distance, eyes glassy and unfocused. I'm not how 'here' she was right now. I didn't see entirely what the matter was. The setting was peaceful enough, a sunny forest glade, I saw more Ice-claws, a large majority of birds, and, to my fear, a bee.
My fur stood on end, I hated bees. They were just so, creepy. I don't care how many times someone had told me, 'they're completely harmless Zach, it's more afraid of you then you are of it'. I had been stung once, and it was not pretty. Then I did a double take. The bee was the size of a dog! I dove behind a bush as it flew past.
"What is this place?" I asked.
"The calm before the storm," she answered ominously.
The tree, that traveled with us, rolled his eyes at her. "It's a festival, they're celebrating nature."
"Okay, but why are the bees so... large?" I questioned, shying away from another one.
"That is simply how things are, I'm sure you'll learn more in the time to come," he said.
Something moved by my leg. I looked down to discover a small kitten. completely white, with tawny wings, and four dirty paws. The longer I stared at her sneaking around in the grass, the more I noticed the tiny little similarities. It looked like a miniature version of Zara.
"Wait, this is a memory, " I grasped. "And that's you."
She didn't answer. Just stared solemnly at her young self. Then she looked behind her, and I noticed another ruffle from the ground. And another kitten appeared. For a second I thought it was another Zara, for he was nearly identical. But I noticed the brown slashes were on opposite eyes. Zara had a brown spot on her right eye. This new guy had it on his left. I think they might have been twins.
Zara mumbled something under her breath. And walked up the boy kitten. he passed right through her. Probably part of being in a memory.
"Alexander," She whispered forlorn. Her chest heaved, and she turned away from me.
Alexander. I remembered that name from my dreams. Zara had been looking for Alex, but why was she so sad? Surely this Alex was back wherever she lived, right?
Zara tromped away, and I continued watching. They had started to play now, chasing each other's tails and laughing. It was sweet, and a little adorable. But... Something about this scene seemed almost, foreboding. Like Zara said, the calm before the storm.
The kittens continued playing, until another walked up. He had blue eyes, and was a light indigo color, a tabby with gray stripes, and tiny little wing, that closely resembled a jay's. The other two didn't see him till he was nearly upon him. And when he jumped from the bushes and scared the two whiter ones, I smiled.
"Jay!" Young Zara squawked, "don't do that!"
So his name was Jay, how appropriate. He looked just like a little blue bird.
"You didn't scare me, I could smell you coming," boasted Alex.
Jay pounced on him. "Yeah right, I'll believe that when squirrels fly."
"I have an idea, let's sneak up on our parents, and scare them!" said Alex.
"No we did that already, and they kicked us out," replied Jay.
"We should pretend to be Battle-claws?" Tried Zara
"I don't know, I don't really want to be a Battle-claw," complained Jay.
"Oh, your just too peaceful, I personally can't wait to tear my claws through enemy flesh," I glanced from younger Zara too older Zara, sounds like her kind of style. As I watched the three argue over fighting and peace, I noticed a calamity rise up a few meters away from where the kittens were playing. Moving my attention over there, I saw a kingly bird, and a gargantuan bee.
I know what you're thinking, I've already gone over the largness of the magical bees. But I'm telling you this one was past dog size and tipping the scales into a more humanlike size. I'm pretty sure this bee had never walked a day in her life, because she was sitting on a satin pillow, with four smaller bees at each corner. Her beesevants looked sarcastically exhausted, with shaking knees and trembling wings. I almost felt sorry for them. The bird, who was a falcon, was trying too keep his small chick from running off, while sustaining a legitimate conversation with her royal stripeyness.
"So how is the flower production going on in your land, Scrylla?" He asked.
Scrylla? Who in the world would name their child Scrylla?
"Fairly good, but's that's actually why I requested your audience Rex."
"Really, well I'm honored, but I really don't know anything about honey production- At, come back here.."'
Scrylla eyed the falcon chick with a look of disgust. It was trying to fly away.
"I don't want your help with our honey, Sweet, a messenger of mine happened to be flying on the edge of your territory, and do you know what he saw?" She purred.
I saw a flash of fear light up on the face of Rex, but it was covered quickly with a more sarcastic look. "What, pray, did you see?"
She leaned and whispered close to his ear, for some reason I could hear it perfectly.
"A Fyreflower," she hissed.
Rex's feather's suddenly pressed against his body. Making him look skinnier, and scared. He got a hold on his son, and brought him under one of his wings.
"What do you want?" He asked, much more serious then before.
"Well Rexy dear, I'm a bee, and you, are a bird, we have a natural right to all the flowers in the world, and besides, what could you possibly use them for, hmm?" She drooled.
"But once they're pollenated, they die, and use the juice that lays in the flower for medicine!" He gasped.
She smiled, "ah, but remember our oath, so many years before, flowers, for protection, so you have to let my subjects in."
"No, please, I beg you, my wife is very ill, she's practically living off of that medicine, we depend on it, don't do it."
"Refusal, hmm, we can't have that, do really want to go to extremities Rex?" The was a slight growl in her annoyingly squeaky voice.
"What are you saying?" He asked, sounding a bit worried.
"This means war," she hissed.
I watched in horror as she rose to an almost standing position, and ruffled her wings. It created a slight humming sound that rose suddenly when more bees joined in, gathering behind her as she screamed a battle cry.
"IF YOU CAN'T SHARE YOUR FLOWERS, THEN WE CAN'T SHARE THEY SKY."
