(CHAPTER 3)

Pain. That's what Fresh had felt as the parasite burrowed itself deep in his skull. Though his eye sockets looked hollow, he had a pocket of magic behind them in his head. He had stopped struggling; finally coming to the conclusion that just letting it happen would hurt less, albeit still being agonizing.

At some point, Fresh passed out from the pain. When he woke up in the morning, he thought that maybe, possibly, it all could have just been a really messed up dream. However, the torturing agony had been too vivid to not have been real. Plus, he felt... different somehow. However, he couldn't identify what seemed off. Before he could fall into a spiral of thoughts, he put his glasses on before heading downstairs for breakfast.

Fresh spent the whole rest of the day going back and forth between denial of last night's events and trying to figure out what the heck happened. He was very confused, but not worried in the least. He couldn't be. He had such dulled down emotions that even this didn't bother him. But wait—that couldn't be right. He was getting better. He should feel at least a little about this. This didn't make sense. Fresh needed to figure out what was going on. It must have had something to do with that weird octopus thing... For some reason, calling it that gave Fresh an uncomfortable feeling—almost like it didn't want to be called that.

After the quick and sudden decline of Fresh's emotions, the rest of his family took notice. CQ and Geno felt bad for him and tried harder than ever to help him, but Error had a different view on the situation. Error's first and only assumption was that Fresh was at fault for this predicament; that he had just given up. Error held fast to this belief and it grew into a strong resentment. He believed that unlike Geno, Fresh had stopped trying to fight his ailment. That irked Error beyond belief. Plus the fact that Fresh did not seem to care much about Geno's feelings anymore, Fresh became the enemy in Error's mind. Little things like poking at Fresh to try and get a reaction quickly turned into bigger things like pushing and straight up teasing. Error and Fresh constantly got into one-sided arguments and fights. Meanwhile, Fresh was still trying to figure out the whole creature situation. Because of past events involving telling people about things going wrong, Fresh had decided that it was a better idea to not tell anyone about his situation, at least until he figured it out.
