Chapter 20

 After living in a tiny city in England for a few months, I was growing used to the idea of starting over, and I had been adjusting very well. I was working part time at a free clinic and attending a small medical school.

 "Morning, Diana."

 "Hey Crystal." I replied, breezing past her into the small nurses quarters.

 Being a medical assistant is nice, because when something goes wrong I can still scream profanities and I get to help people, which is something I never thought I would be able to do before. Even though I only get to work as a nurse when another employee isn't there, it helps me with school and I guess it's a good experience overall.

 I was working at the receptionist desk when I heard the clicking of shoes on the tile floor. I waited for somebody to tell me what they needed, and continued filling out paperwork.

 "Is Diana Richardson in today?"

 "That's me." I answered, still not looking up. "What can I help you with?"

 "Oh, just wanted to talk to her. It's Sam Adams speaking, in case you were wondering."

 That got my attention, and my head snapped up. Sam was standing in front of me, just like he had said, with a big, stupid grin on his face.

 "Oh my God, Sam!" I exclaimed, opening the door leading from the waiting room to the office.

 I basically tackled Sam, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. I pulled back to look at him, with his new shorter hair and golden skin, he looked different.

 "Diana, get back to work."

 I had to literally dig my nails into my palm to keep from giving that stupid doctor the middle finger, but I smiled and Sam and returned to the counter.

 "So, medical school, huh?" Sam laughed, playing with a pen attached to a clipboard.

 "Yeah, I know. I never saw it coming either." I said, sitting down and finishing the patient files I was supposed to do.

 "Hey, I don't want to get you in anymore trouble. I'm staying at that tiny hotel a few streets over. You should stop by after work so we can catch up." He told me.

 "Okay, sure." I smiled.

 "Nice hair by the way." He replied, smiling and walking towards the door.

 Having Sam visit was probably about the best gift I could receive then. It was a little lonely being the new person in the smallest town in England, but I was meeting new people everyday...that didn't mean a little visit from an old friend would hurt though, trust me.

 After I finished off the last of the files, I went to hang up my nurse's badge, that I'm required to wear. I said goodnight to a few of members of the staff and slipped my jacket on. Before visiting Sam, I was definitely going to freshen up.

 I walked out to my car and quickly hopped in, blowing warm breaths on my freezing hands. It was almost Christmas, and the cold weather just kept coming. I started the car and turned on the radio. I have to admit, it was refreshing to listen to the radio without hearing my name. Skinny Love by: Birdy was playing softly as I drove down the narrow streets, covered with fake snowflakes.

 I pulled into my apartment complex and took elevator up. I unlocked my door and grabbed a pair of jeans and a plain navy sweater. I had graduated from my gray t-shirts, to actual tops and sweaters...especially for winter. Pulling on some boots, I rushed out the door and back towards my car.

 In just ten minutes, I found myself pulling into the hotel Sam mentioned earlier.

 "Hi, I'm looking for Sam Adams." I told the man at the front desk, pulling the sleeves of my sweater farther down on my hands.

 "We can't give out personal information, I'm sorry." He replied, turning back to his computer.

 I sighed, and looked around. My eyes landed on an open notebook with some names and room numbers. I made sure the man was still turned before looking for Sam's name and finding his room.

 406. Got it.

 I walked up the four flights of stairs and found myself outside his door. I knocked and waited for him to answer.

 "Hey, you made it." Sam said, answering the door.

 "Yeah." I smiled, giving him a hug. "You know, that guy at the front desk is a real douche."

 "I agree. Whenever I come in he mumbles 'hoodlum' under his breath." He laughed.

 We both stood there until a ringing noise seemed to snap Sam from his trance.

 "Oh shit! That's the chicken." He exclaimed, running into the kitchen.

 I rolled my eyes and wandered into the living room: everything was a generic piece of hotel furniture, accept a picture frame resting on the small table beside a chair. I picked it up to look at it, and a picture of Sam with a beautiful girl stared back at me.

 I don't know why, but I suddenly became jealous, almost slamming the picture back on the table. I managed to stop myself, and placed it gently back down. Sam walked in and told me the food was ready.

 I followed him to the table and sat down beside him.

 "Wow, this is good for a hotel oven." I said, setting down my fork.

 "I am a pretty damn amazing cook." Sam shrugged.

 "I don't remember your name being 'Stouffer'." I replied, smirking.

 "How did you know?" He demanded.

 "I saw the box in the trash." I admitted.

 We shared a few stories about what life had been like since he left for Georgia, from my story about my first day in England, to his about accidentally crashing a wedding instead of a frat party.

 "Okay, I have to tell you something." Sam exhaled, nervously twisting his hands within each other.

 "What is it?" I asked, sitting up straighter.

 "I didn't come to England just to visit you." He told me.

 "Okay...then why did you?" I replied.

 "I've made a huge mistake."

~~~
 So...yeah.
 A little cliffhanger.
