[song is Bleeding by The Ready Set]
***
That night, Phil actually managed to get a few hours of sleep. Despite the fact that his head was still a horrendous, confused mess about everything, he shut most of it out and let unconsciousness take him over. And, for once in a very long time, he didn't dream.
He was still wary. And afraid, about many things he couldn't even begin to explain. What if Zoe and the rest of Dan's family decided Phil was too much of a risk and got rid of him? Or Dan was forced to stay away from him? Or what if Dan just left him, decided he wasn't worth it anymore?
Or what if those hunters finally made an appearance? He hadn't heard much about them, and from what he had been told, they weren't good. Them showing would only lead to even worse scenarios, death being the most prominent.
It was funny, because before all of this, the inevitability of death hadn't seemed so drastic. Phil had been much more focused on his life, the things he did and didn't do, and what he wanted to make of himself. He'd cared more about book endings and doing well in school than when he was going to die. It had seemed far away and not too much of problem. But now it was a constant threat, that had Phil obscenely worried about every move he made. Anything could bring him down that path, and he really wasn't ready.
Of course, he also wasn't ready for school, but that was something he would have to deal with for right now. He had spent enough time hiding in his room, and now that him and Dan were.... slightly okay again, he didn't really have a reason for doing so. And his parents would start getting suspicious if he continued being absent. He didn't want to drag them into this situation at all, if he could avoid it.
The usual walk to school seemed a lot longer and tiring. That might also be given to the fact that he wasn't a morning person, and physical movement wasn't on the top of his Thing I Like list, but there was something else, too. Reluctance to reach his destination, at the prospect of having to interact with people anymore than he had to. Either way, by the time he did reach the building, he had a headache and was ready to go back home.
But maybe he had just an ounce of luck left in his life, because almost as soon as he walked through the doors, he ran into Dan. Quite literally, having to grab the other boy's shoulders to keep from falling backwards. Dan grasped his arms, smiling slightly.
"Clumsy today, are we?" He said with a laugh. Phil rolled his eyes and gave a sarcastic grin.
"I'll have you know, I'm always like this. You're just too thick to notice it most of the time."
It was unreal, how they naturally fell back into their normal routine. Teasing and laughing, as if the events of the last week hadn't even happened. Phil was half convinced it had all been some lucid dream, some dramatic, sleep deprivation-induced fake reality.
Dan hummed, letting him go and continuing the way he'd been heading before. Towards the front doors.
"Um, Dan?" Phil questioned, pointing behind him when Dan turned around. "Class is that way."
"I'm not going to class today." He said, simple as anything. As if this was something that everyone did, and you'd be crazy if you didn't. Phil folded his arms.
"Really?" Dan nodded. "Where are you going, then?"
"Well, you'll just have to come with me to find out, won't you?" Dan replied with a smirk, walking backwards and staring at Phil.
He shouldn't. When was the last time hanging out with Dan at all had led to something good? Zoe would probably find him again. School would probably call his parents to let them know he was absent. And there was the fact he had no idea what Dan was up to in the first place. Something dangerous and stupid, most likely, that could affect him badly.
But his common sense and his will weren't that strong, he knew. And especially not when Dan was tempting him like that.
Phil glanced behind him. The bell had yet to ring, and students were still crowding the halls, talking with their friends and sharing kisses with their partners before they had to separate.
"I hate you." Phil said lightly, following Dan out of the front doors once again. Dan shook his head and slapped Phil on the back.
"That's more like it."
For a while, they just walked. Phil had no idea where they were heading, but he had to admit, it was a lot better than whatever he'd be doing in school right now. Dan kept trying to make him laugh, telling stupid jokes and pointing at random things, but all he got were sighs and humorless head shakes.
If he had known this was what the day was going to be like, he wouldn't have brought his bag. His shoulders ached slightly from the textbooks that weighed him down and he stated enviously at Dan's empty back.
"Are we just going to walk the whole time?" Phil asked, practically dragging himself around at this point. Dan seemed not to mind the exercise, actually skipping once in a while.
"Oh, stop complaining." Dan chided, nudging Phil playfully. "We're nearly there."
'There' turned out to be a generic coffee shop, and after Dan payed for two hot chocolates, they headed across the street to an empty park, settling on one of the benches. Phil gratefully set his bag on the ground next to his feet.
"And this is worth skipping school for?" Phil asked teasingly, sipping from his cup carefully. "And here I thought we were gonna do something fun. Rob a bank, maybe. Steal a car."
"You see, I was going to do that." Dan said thoughtfully. "But I just couldn't find the right outfit for it."
Phil nodded. "Yes, I understand. That's always important."
Dan laughed into his cup.
This was so weird. Yesterday, Phil had been out of his mind and couldn't stand the thought of being next to Dan. And now they were here, joking and drinking hot chocolate like lifelong best friends. There wasn't even any tension, at least, none that he could detect. It was normal. Well, as normal as you could make it seem.
"So how've you been?" Dan asked after a moment. Phil snorted.
"Well, I can honestly say I've been better." He said, twisting his cup in his hands. "Hanging out with bloodthirsty demons will do that to you, I suppose."
Dan shook his head. "Bloodthirsty isn't a word I would use."
"And what about that guy you killed? You know, in that wood? What was that called?"
"Just deserts?" Dan shrugged. "Does it really matter?"
Phil raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I'd say it fucking matters. He was a person."
"He was a demon." Dan said tightly, setting his cup on the bench between them. "He was a demon, and he got what he deserved. He broke laws, very important ones that could end all of us."
Phil stared at him, then sighed and ran a hand over his face. "And you don't see how ironic and hypocritical that is?" He asked.
Dan laughed. "Oh trust me. I see it plain and clear."
It was silent between them, neither wanting to keep up whatever it was they were doing. Arguing, discussing.
Phil took the the cap off of his half empty cup and titled it slightly, watching the liquid splash on to the ground. His stomach was rolling too much to keep drinking it. "Do you love me?" He asked calmly. "You said it yesterday. Told me you love me, but I don't know for sure."
Dan looked down at his lap, his leg bouncing nervously. "I don't know, either." He said quietly. "I don't know anything. My feelings, what I want, what I should do."
Phil sat back against the bench, looking over at Dan, who didn't look back. It always seemed to catch him by surprise, how gorgeous he was. He didn't even seem to know it, did it without even trying. What would a guy like that want anything to do with someone like himself?
"Okay, this is getting too serious." Dan exclaimed, crossing his arms behind his head and stretching his legs out in front of him. He glanced back at Phil with a suggestive look. "What do you wanna do now?"
Phil shrugged helplessly. "I don't know. I wasn't really expecting a day out with you."
"There has to be something you want to do." Dan persisted. "You can't have nothing."
"Well I do."
"That's so boring."
"You're boring."
Dan sighed heavily and stood up, grabbing Phil's arm and hauling him up as well. Phil didn't resist, having no other choice, really. "I'll show you boring."
Phil laughed, just managing to grab his bag before Dan pulled him away.
***
"Oh yes, this is very boring." Phil said, as they pushed through the doors of the library. It was a different one, not the one Zoe had cornered him in last week. This one was larger and much more elegant. There were three floors and about two hundred shelved on every one.
"Figured it would be right up your alley." Dan joked.
The lady at the front desk didn't spare them a glance, obviously more concerned with whatever was on her computer screen than the fact that two teenage boys had just walked in when school was still in. They headed to the elevators, and Dan pushed the button for the very top floor.
It was quiet, almost suffocatingly so. There were very few adults here, and the teenagers that usually occupied the space were in class. The dim lighting outside did nothing for the brightness of the room, casting shadows everywhere.
Dan led him to the very back of the room, behind a few bookshelves and away from any prying eyes. He wore the biggest smile as he turned to face Phil, reaching up and gently grasping his face with both hands.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked almost breathlessly, leaning in closely. Phil's breath hitched.
"Why are you asking?"
"Don't you think it'd be rude if I just attacked you like that, out of nowhere?"
Phil closed his eyes, suppressing a laugh. "Never stopped you before."
"Is that a yes?"
"Yes."
Dan kissed him firmly, reaching his hands around to tangle his fingers into Phil's hair. Phil didn't hesitate to reciprocate, clutching Dan's shirt tightly as he kissed back. Dan seemed eager enough to take the lead this time, and Phil let him, desperate for this contact.
Dan whined in the back of his throat, tilting his head to the side as the kiss grew deeper, his tongue brushing against Phil's.
He was hot all over, reacting to the electricity of Dan's lips, and his touch. It was times like this that made him forget about the messed up situation he was in, about the fact that Dan was a demon in every aspect of the word. Both of their asses were in the line because of this, but he didn't care. Because this was the way he dealt with things.
Dan pulled away after a moment, breathing harshly against Phil's lips and still holding him close. He kissed him once more before opening his eyes, looking at Phil with excitement and want. "That is something I've missed this last week."
Phil giggled shakily, still a bit lightheaded. "I should go home." It didn't really feel like it, but hours had passed in the time they'd spent together. School was out by now, and Phil's parents were gonna be home soon, if they weren't already.
Dan nodded, backing away a few steps. "Me too." He said. "I'm probably already in trouble for skipping school. Double when they found out what I was doing."
They went back the way they'd come, exiting the library and parting ways, as they lived in different directions. Phil stuffed his hands in his pockets, keeping his head down as he walked. It was getting later, which meant the temperature was also going down. The streets were surprisingly empty.
He didn't know how to describe how he was feeling. Elated, or happy. Satisfied. Or maybe he was just horny, it was all the same. Either way, he felt good about himself. Like maybe he mattered more than he'd previously thought.
He paused in the middle of the walk, staring up at the sky. He ran his fingers through his hair. And laughed. This was crazy. Everything was crazy, and amazing and so, so messed up.
He shook his head, and had just started walking again when he felt a sharp sting in his neck, and not a second later, his vision went black.
