13.-Picnics In The Road
"Wait, who are they?" Cleo muttered to her friend.
The two of them were sitting on the sidewalk of Main Street, eating some cheese sandwiches together. The blue sky was cloudless, letting the sun beat down on the hard concrete. The two had set down a small picnic blanket to not let the grimy rock dig into their legs, nor their extra sandwiches.
The brunette looked up from the small book he was reading, glancing at Cleo. "Who?"
"Them." The ginger pointed forward, towards 3 people standing at the stairs of Town Hall. "That one in the middle is pretty short."
"Wha- oh." Joe's smile left his face as he squinted his eyes. "They aren't supposed to be here."
"Who are they?"
"Uhm, let's go say hi. You'll get to know each other, instead of you knowing about them."
Cleo nodded, standing up. "Let's go, then! We don't want them to leave without us!"
Joe laughed, getting up from the picnic blanket slowly. "Oh come on, Miss Cleo! You know about my legs!"
Cleo did know about his legs. Joe told her about it the second night she was in Hermiton. Joe's legs were replaced with old metal ones after an accident a few years earlier. The old things didn't look very nice with the red-orange rust building up on parts of them, or the small dents and cracks from adventures Joe had been on. But they were Joe's legs, and he most certainly didn't have enough money to pay for new ones.
Cleo took his hand in hers, walking quickly over to the trio in front of them. "Hello!"
Joe laughed, waving at the three. "Hello, Mister Void. Hello, Mx Void."
The two taller people waved, and the shortest giggled. "Hello, Joe. New friend?"
The one who had spoken was wearing a yellow sweater despite the heat and gray pants. Most notably, he had some soft of mechanical facemask covering his nose and mouth. The other person was slightly taller than him, and wore a matching red sweater and mask.
"Yes, this is Cleo Zaaron. She's quite nice, and she wanted to say hello to you three."
"Oh, that's fun!" The first laughed, looking down at the shortest there. "Can you say hello, J?"
The little person had pitch black skin and short dark gray hair, thin blue streaks running through it. They wore a large black shirt with little green, blue, and magenta dots. "Hi!"
"Miss Cleo, this is Xavier- or Xisuma- and Yesse Void, they're quite nice people. And the little one Jrum. Xavier, when did you adopt her again..?" Joe paused, turning to the other brunette.
"2020, 2021? I don't really remember," Xisuma laughed. "Life's been a bit funner now that J here can fully talk and... well, do things now."
Cleo nodded before looking towards the person in red. "Wait, I think I've seen you before..."
"We've met. It was when you met some of the Otherhermits, remember?" The person ran their hand through their white hair before turning to Xisuma. "I'm sorry, X. I know I shouldn't have let her meet them-"
"It's okay, I have a meeting with Scar now. That's why we met up here, Yesse. Now, have a fun time! Goodbye, J!" And with that, The brunette ran up the stone stairs, disappearing behind the doorway to the large building.
"So, uh..." Cleo tried a small grin. "Do you and that- uh, how do you say his name-"
"Just say X," Yesse butted in. "We're siblings. He has things he has to do, so I often take care of Jrum. X teaches her important stuff, I teach her bad words and how to climb trees."
"I can say fuck around Unty Y!" the little girl laughed, hugging the person's legs. "Unty Y says I can't around Dad, though."
"I can see you've taught her well, then," Joe laughed. "I haven't seen her in years, now that I think of it."
Cleo tried to hide a snicker at the three. "W- Why can't you say fuck around your dad?"
"Unty Y says Dad won't be happy." the little girl pouted. "But that's okay! Dad lets me catch bees with him sometimes!"
"Yesse, do you need help taking care of her? We could-"
"Nah, I'm good. Anyways, I think RG is coming over here in a bit with his dad, and you know..." The person trailed off. "So, we'll see you later!" With that, they lead the girl to the close Nether portal, disappearing into the purple swirls.
Cleo watched them leave, still enamored by the ways of transportation the people of Hermiton used. It was still so foreign to her despite staying in Hermiton for days now. "...Joe?"
"Yes?" The man turned to her with a smile on his face.
"Joe, what was that about Robot Grian and his dad? And why is EX allowed on the island, I heard that he- they were banished a while ago?"
"Oh, are you talking about that old book you found? It's quite old, we let the OtherHermits back on the island a few years ago. Most of them stay in their lair down by my house, though."
"'Kay. Now, didn't Yesse say that-"
"HEY, CLEO!"
The ginger turned around to see two figures walking down Main Street towards them, the taller waving crazily. "CLEO! HI!"
Joe laughed. "So, I think your friend is here now."
The two people finally got close enough to the pair to see them clearly, and the taller robot immediately pulled Cleo into an embrace. "Hi, Cleo! What are you up to?"
Cleo stumbled slightly at the sudden contact, but slowly hugged back. "Me and Joe were just having a picnic, nothing much."
"Hi, Joe," The other smiled. "Who's your new friend here?"
"Hello, Grian! This is my dear friend Cleo, she's very nice."
"Yeah, Dad! I told you about her a few days ago, remember? The zombie girl I met? I think Enjie met her that night on his little trinket-grabbing game," RG smiled, stepping away from Cleo. "But you thought we were making up tall tales, remember? 'It's good you're writing your own stories, son.' Who says that anymore?" The tall robot started laughing hard, hugging his dad around his shoulders.
Cleo snickered as the dirty blonde's face grew a bright crimson. "A story!? Dang, and I thought you were a smart man by the way Robot Grian talked about you."
"Well, we don't have zombie people here! Stuff happens in Hermiton, I guess." Grian smiled, reaching a hard around his son to Cleo. "So, hi."
The ginger laughed, taking his hand and shaking it. "Hello!"
The short man got out of his son's arms to get a better look at the woman. "So, who here have you met?"
"Oh, uhm..." Cleo stopped, squeezing her eyes shut to think. "Uhm... Joe, RG, uhm- X, and some of your resistance? I think that's all..." She glanced at Joe, who nodded slightly. "Oh! And Cub. A few days ago."
"Hm." Grian nodded. "Okay, uhm..." He furrowed his eyebrows, looking past the ginger at the jobs billboard behind her.
"Hmm?" Cleo turned around, glancing back at him. "What is it?"
The dirty blonde shook his head, looking back to his robot. "Nothing, just thinking. Now RG, let's go to the gaming district?"
"Mhm," the taller nodded, hugging Cleo quickly before turning to his dad. "Let's go, then. Bye, Cleo!"
The pair sat back down on their picnic blanket as they watched the others leave; Joe more falling over than anything. Cleo hastily adjusted her flower crown, grabbing her extra sandwich.
Joe ran a hand through his hair, turning to Cleo with a smirk. "He likes you."
