Chapter 23

Emma falls asleep under Castiel's arm. It's only the sound of her quiet snoring that makes him realize that they're been out here for so long. He doesn't want to risk waking her up by carrying her inside, but he's sure she won't be comfortable sitting out here all night, either. He carefully scoops her up in his arms, pausing when she stirs, but when her eyes stay closed, he assumes he's in the clear.

Castiel lightly taps his foot against the door in hopes that James will hear it and open it for him. Unfortunately, his plan doesn't work, so he has to open it himself. He awkwardly crouches next to the door handle, puts a hand on it, and crouches even more to pull it does just enough to open the door. He stands up and kicks the door open, then nudges it again with his foot to close it.

He gently puts Emma down in her bed, then pulls the blankets up to keep her warm. He pauses, just watching her for a moment. People are so cute when they sleep. He doesn't know why that is, but it's something he's always noticed, and Emma is definitely no exception.

He slowly backs away and takes a look around the room. It looks a lot like the Winchesters' motel rooms used to before they moved into the bunker. Duffel bags on the floor, laptops left on tables, takeout containers shoved in the trash. And, of course, two hunters asleep in their beds, though he knows they'll sleep a lot longer than the Winchesters do.

Maybe that's why they're so much nicer. He noticed during his time as a human that he wasn't always the nicest person when he was tired. With the Winchesters averaging five hours of sleep every night if they're lucky, they must be pretty miserable. That would actually explain a lot, even if it doesn't excuse it.

Castiel takes a seat at the table and opens up his laptop — because, after a decade of living among humans, he's finally been gifted with this staple of the human experience. He never exit the page he had been reading when he first heard Dean's voice in his head, so his computer seems to think that's a good place to start. He's come to realize computers are usually right, so he decides to go along with it.

And, just like that, it's like nothing ever happened.
